I mean, he's 27. I don't think he is going to be breaking through to new heights at this stage really.

if Ross is off, as is reported, then Harry has to stay with leinster. id be happy enough with that situation. Frawley will probably be with ireland, Sam definitely will be. We'd need an experienced head at 10 and Harry would be perfect.

Still, it highlights a problem with the IRFU system when a capped 10 like Ross Byrne is lost to them, most likely due to their own policies, when the likes of Ulster and Connacht could do with him as their starting 10. Morgan hasnt worked out (yet) and its not clear how 'long term' Ioane is. The safe bet is he will be returning to the SH or france / japan after his Connacht stint.

Surely the onus is on the other provinces to sell themselves to the Byrnes (R or H) as to the benefits of joining them and be able to put a competitive package together. All 3 provinces are reasonably competitive in URC and Ccup and for Harry, he’s still in the system if he starts tearing up trees.

There's no world in which Leinster will end up with only Sam as a senior out-half option. It would be farcical mismanagement of the squad and no professional team would let three of their four out-halves walk out the door with no replacements.

Frawley might not be first choice OH any time soon but he won’t be leaving, especially if Ross Byrne leaves.

Frawley only signed a new contract last season so he isn’t even available

If rumours are to be believed, Connacht put an opportunity in front of him last summer but he had no interest in going there.

To be honest I would probably go abroad in the same position as both Byrne brothers. Ross won't feature for Ireland again and is unlikely to win anything at any other province. Why not go abroad and give another league a go.

Harry is slightly different where a good half a season could see him back in the Irish squad, but Crowley would be ahead of him at Munster while he would be behind beaten packs half the time at Connacht and Ulster. Either stick around Leinster and realistically fight for the bench spot or go abroad and give French/England a crack.

just turned 27 weeks ago. Don’t agree at all. Time will tell.

Good for Ross, well deserved and I hope he takes in the rugby dollars at this stage of his career. He has been an outstanding asset to Leinster.

Yeah great news for the lad at this point, I think its an ideal move away from the Top Trumps carry on that happens in the bubble of the Irish system. Gloucester is a top Club and better run than many in the Prem.

I know Ross a bit through business connections, and I was talking to him at a sponsor commitment event, about 10 days after the Champions Cup Final last year. I was saying I had been in White Hart Lane and he was apologising to me for the disappointing outcome.

I remember saying to him, listen lad, you fellas work hard in a hugely competitive system and give great enjoyment to tens of thousands of us, week in week out. You should never feel the need to excuse yourself for coming up short against an exceptional team, to a beer drinking old fatty like me whose greatest athletic achievement is jumping to conclusions. So we had a laugh and I hope he felt a bit better than his day had started.

He's a sound man and a great servant, I wish him good fortune across the pond, hopefully we may see him back to finish out his career yet.

Thornley reporting it now - I was skeptical when I saw the Daily Mail

    https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/rugby/2025/02/19/ross-byrne-will-leave-leinster-after-agreeing-three-year-gloucester-deal/

3 year deal is good going in fairness.

I think it's fair to say he'd be on a decent wedge there. AJ McGinty allegedly earning over 400k sterling.

According to the Telegraph earlier this week Molony is on north of 200k sterling.

It would be a good wedge for a multi cap international one would imagine. Far north on what Leinster probably would have tabled for him.

Very best of luck to Ross.

I hope he does well over there

He'll do really well I think, I'd argue he's immediately a top 5 outhalf in the Premiership.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,559 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

Mark my words, next year there'll be a retrospective reappraisal of how good and reliable Ross has been for us from those who have been criticising him (although they'd probably never admit it).

Great deal for him and I hope he goes well over there. Always seemed like a great guy so it's well deserved.

I don't think anyone on here would be particularly critical of Ross. He's a great servant. Close on 200 games for Leinster. He might have lacked something athletically to compete with the very very best but don't think anyone felt that was some sort of culpable failing.

Have you seen the URC table, all 3 provinces are in a league with no relegation but only one of the other 3 could be called competitive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,220 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

On a personal level, Harry Byrne would be pretty foolish to stay in Leinster (assuming his contract is up this year). The coaches have made it pretty clear where he stands.

Was it ever released what length his contract extension signed last year was for.

I assume it was 2 yr extension which would run to Summer 26

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,559 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

Oh agreed, this is generally a very positive thread (even in trickier times) and it wasn't a slight on anyone here. I meant it more broadly to the nutters out there with conspiracy theories and those who constantly abused him online.

Was his contract length announced? Various rumours at the time it was only 1 year.

I don't know, hence my qualifier.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 29,899 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

No. Leinster never announce contract length. 2 years is standard but I heard the 1 year rumours too. Who knows ultimately - I guess we'll find out soon enough.

They'd probably feel just about ok with Prendergast, Frawley and Tector with Gabriel to get a game or two.

I'd hope that Connacht are already in the process of making a very good offer to Harry this Summer too. Obviously it'll be up to Leinster if he's still under contract and Harry himself if we want's to move West.

Connacht do have some issues but Harry could go a long way to solving a few of them while improving as a player himself. We're in dire need of an out half who can manage a game, and kick well, while still facilitating the attacking game we want to play. Of our squad only Carty has those attributes but his body has taken too much toil to start regularly, and he makes too many unforced errors. We're still missing some power in the second row and lack tactical nuance in our exits and general kicking game, but a really good out half could make both of those less problematic.

The big open question for me as a Connacht fan is what quality Irish players are hearing back on the grapevine about the instability of our coaching situation? We hear little enough ourselves as supporters but the player community is very small if someone wants a quiet off the record chat.

Ala'altoa signed a 1 year deal in 2023 so they do, do them.

Gloucester Rugby confirm the signing of Ross Byrne. Will be sad to see him go. Great player for Leinster and never had any worries when he was starting in Sexton's absence.

Byrne, Molony and Ruddock have all left or are leaving. They were a huge part of Leinster continuing to rack up points in the absence of the test players. We need the younger play rs to start stepping up now.

Best of luck to him, a great player for us over the years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,865 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Tommy O'Brien is starting at 14 for Ireland. Hope for his sake that he makes it through the game unscathed and performs well.

Frawley starts at 10 so clearly Ireland is still looking at him as a viable third option there. Deegan captains at blindside.

Six Leinster players on the bench. Soroka had an impressive Emerging Ireland tour and has played well for us since returning. Hope he goes well again.

It is sad to see Ross go but his inability to play closer to the gain line is what cost him his spot at Leinster. He was way too comfortable sitting deeper just so he wouldn't get smashed and it cost him his spot with Ireland and Leinster because it hindered the attack. Now that is not me saying Byrne is a bad player, he was really good on his day for Leinster and was and will continue to be a fantastic servant for Leinster until the end of the season but I just wish he played a less conservative brand of rugby because the rest of his game is international standard and Gloucester are getting themselves a top player who will be one of the best fly halves in the Premiership in the next 12 months.

Best of luck Ross! Do us proud.

This move further demonstrates why the belief held by a vocal group that 'moving around Leinster players' is a credible solution to any problem is incredibly lazy and unsupported by evidence. Players are human and can't be shuffled around like in a computer game. Even if they are under contract, the IRFU can't force them to move to another province.

Another factor possibly influencing this move is Leinster's budget being impacted by new rules. The simplistic analysis that anyone leaving Leinster would end up in other provinces overlooks the fact that players must want to make the move. As a previous poster mentioned, each province needs to convince departing Leinster players of their plans, and currently, none seem particularly appealing compared to decent offers abroad.

In reality, a significant group just wants Leinster weakened. They will feign 'a loss to Irish rugby' but will be satisfied. While losses like this do chip away at their depth, it also opens the door for the next academy player to step up.

Ross had a great career here, hopefully the team can get it over the line this year and he can leave with a few more medals.
