Took a trip up to Belfast with my youngster in the new, 2016 IS300h. We stopped counting Audis when 40 odd had passed us in the fast lane.

Whatever about Beemers or Mercs, the country is awash with 'Owdies.

Awash for sure but also with Mercs and BMW. That's what happens when previously aspirational brands decide to cheapen their brand by selling entry level models and specs. Proper merc start at E Class, proper BMWs at 3 series, proper Audis at A4,5 and I don't mean the poverty spec ones either. All these brands, and to an extent several others, have dumped their premium exclusivity to bring Joe soap on board and fool him or her into believing they have a real premium product when in reality they bought a poor value hyped up shadow of the real thing.

not just that , its pcp and higher wages etc- plenty of bigger bmws and mercs around

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,025 ✭✭✭sk8board

    it’s exactly this.

The cars are still premium in terms of their gap to the categories above and below, but the entry level prices are now faaaar higher than they were, and almost all new car purchases are on some form of financing.

I think what the other poster is getting at is that in the (long distant) past, if someone had a new merc or whatever, you can assume they had the physical cash to buy it on day one and drive it away.

You could say the same about Rolls Royce - in the 80s or 90s anyone with a RR had the £150k to buy it and it was the epitome of richy rich.

These days every wedding chauffeur or fancy hotel has one, paid for on a monthly.

More accessible doesn’t mean less premium, but it does mean less unique or rare.

Well Smart are still not that well known here and the resale value on it might not be great. That's why.

"Proper merc start at E Class, proper BMWs at 3 series,"

Why is that a Proper Merc starts in the D segment but a BNW in the C segment of cars? I had an uncle who thought the same about Mercs by the way that if it was not an E class or higher it was not a proper Mercedes lol.

I'd agree that E class upwards is a real mercedes.

Clearly 5 series is the equivalent in bmw but a 6 cylinder 3 series always traditionally had a following so it would be unfair to not call it a proper bmw even if a class below the E class.

I think the mercedes 190e was far more respected than the early C class that replaced it.

I remember a review of the C-Class when it came out in 1993.

"A tad too much car for a tad too little engine" was how the journo described it at the time.

No the problem with the ' c ' was it marked the beginning of mercedes cost cutting era . That's why a 190 is a modern classic but c never will be

I agree that the C class is a bit meh, but the original C class coupe is a bit of a classic in the making imo.

I picked up a new Focus yesterday. It's a run out model at this stage but it's still very good to drive.

I enjoyed the 2 Pumas I've owned but the 155bhp engine is only available with automatic transmission since the facelift.

The new car is an ST Line in race red. The touch screen is huge.

@barneygumble99 - nice to see cars like that still being bought new over here. The tax isn't that bad on it either.

Congrats @Buddy Bubs and @Henry Ford III!

Saw a 251 C G wagon in Bishopstown about a week ago. Didn’t think the owner would go for a C reg on a car like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,930 ✭✭✭User1998

The only acceptable county prefix for a G Wagon is G😀 Theres one that has G-63

are you it was a G class ? i havent seen one at Merc dealers or around Cork

there is a black GLS that resides on the northside of cork city - big house but the Merc. is worth as much as the houses near it !
