Oh it's definitely a move all the pros use, and even a lot of (but not all) Hwo's at my level use, which I would guess is due to them also having trouble with the move on controller as I only play PS5. It's not the move itself that's the issue as I can hit it (and other moves which use similar inputs) outside of combos, it's more so hitting it after a stance change (which uses the same buttons) in the middle of a combo (ie. 3+4, 3~4). Getting the timing and accuracy of it right just never works for me. Even with training I either can't hit it and drop the combo, or the few times I have hit it I've been so shocked I've hit it that I forget what's next and drop the combo.

There are other good moves I think the leverless will help with (just-frame sky rocket) but I also do think I'm probably better learning a different character from the start with the leverless, to negate existing muscle memory issues. Then once I have the use of the leverless down, see if I can translate it back to Hwoarang. Or hey, maybe I'll have found a new main altogether.

Cosmo D, one of my favourite indie dev weirdos (very much a compliment), has a new game coming out called Moves of the Diamond Hand. Definitely a mechanical follow-up to his previous game, the wonderful Betrayal at Club Low, in which he developed a mad RPG system of 'pizza dice' which governed your interactions with characters and the world by requiring regular skill checks. Set in his Off-Peak world again, with copious references to his former games throughout.

There's a lengthy demo for this out ahead of a full early access release. Played through it last night and it's great. Systems are more elaborate than Betrayal, with plenty of items, status conditions, skills, pickpocketing and other twists to juggle. All the characters are demented and creepy as always, and the writing suitably bizarre. You can, of course, still cook pizza dice for valuable bonuses. It's great.

I have a hitbox. It's a really fun and tactile feeling way to play fighting games. Don't know much about Hwoarang but there's some executional stuff in Tekken that's just really hard no matter what, like how frame tight the wave dashing stuff is with Mishima characters. At the same time doing BnBs in Tekken feels easier than SF

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,245 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Tekken has always been a bit easier with inputs than other fighters save for mortal Kombat but my issue is how much you have to learn. But yeah, some things are stupid tough to pull off. Much prefer street fighter.

King of Fighters is a series I really want to get into but the skill ceiling to be competent is through the roof. Not played much of the last two entries and SNK seem to have been making their games more approachable. Samurai Shodown was fantastic in this regard, loads of complexity but making inputs easy and having universal inputs for complex moves. I'm hoping City of Wolves follows Sam Sho.

The new Wizardry Daphne story content just released. Back to the grind....

I wish you could blacklist/block games on the PS store.

12 fúcking years and still GTAV pollutes the top of sales pages with their "megalodon shark card premium edition" shíte. Get out of my sight, GTAV.

It's RockStar paying to be there. They pay Sony and Xbox to be seen. Like anything in life. Magazines talking good about a product they were paid to do so.

Was looking for something completely different so went for a series I haven’t played in ages: SSX. Installed SSX3 and SSX 2012 on the series X and played both for a while.

3 actually looks great on the Series X, better than 2012. The art style holds up and looks sharp whereas 2012 looks like its aged.

Overall 3 is the better game too, better tracks and doing the mountain from top to bottom is great - the one downside is the finicky controls making trick combinations a chore. 2012 has a much more natural control set and is much easier to pick up and play. But it really doesn’t feel like SSX, just a solid arcade snowboarder.

It’s a series that has just been forgotten about by EA which is a shame, even a remaster package of tricky/3(with better controls!) seems like an easy win.

Had actually forgotten there even was an SSX reboot in 2012 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,559 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I kind of recognise SSX3 as being a better game overall, but I loved the more arcade feel and just fun of Tricky more. Got Tricky working on an emulator on Steamdeck but had trouble being able to save games so never got back to it. Might see about trying to get it working again in the future.

Never actually played Tricky, just owned the 2 others from way back when, but must give it a go - seems the general consensus is 3 is a great step forward but Tricky is more fun.

Have a few games running fine through PCSX2 setup through EmuDeck with no problems saving so it could be worth trying again, although generally if a game was released on the GameCube I find it the better option, the games look better, there’s less slowdown and better widescreen support.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,559 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah I'm not sure what my issue with Emudeck is, I can't seem to get it to mount a Memory Card (or rather, it seems like I have it done and then in a game when I go to save it says there's no memory card installed). I'll mess around with it a bit more some time when I think of it, mostly I just need to plug in my wireless mouse because trying to do it with touchscreen or other inputs on the SD is a pain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,580 ✭✭✭McFly85

for pcsx2 you have to open it in desktop mode, create a new memory card from the management screen then load the bios from the menu and then format the card from the ps2 memory card management screen before it can be used.

It’s a bit laborious, don’t know why it didn’t go down the duck station route of just creating. Memory card for each game.

Yeah think that's what I've done, but could be that it's in the wrong folder or something. Not sure, been a while since I took a look at it. Probably better trying to undo my previous attempts (as I think there are ones in my list that aren't properly formatted etc) and starting again. Usually it's just a case that when I start up the SD and see my PS2 games, rather than trying to fix it again, I just play Balatro.

Back on the Wizardry Variants Daphne bandwagon and the new story content is off to a great start.

The greater warped one is introduced in a fantastically tense scene where you hold them off while the casualties of a botched assault are carried away. The desert environment looks great.

The set up is a lot more interesting than the last bit of major story content. It has you sneaking into a castle that's being held hostage by a greater warped one. Feels like a fantasy heist set up. Only a short way into the first floor of the dungeon but there's some fun new mechanics and they are doubling down on new nasty traps and enemies.

Finished out my play through of the resistance trilogy. That's a great series. Great variety of weapons, enemies, missions, locations.

While I enjoyed 1 it's very dated, 2 was a big step up but 3 is by far the best. I liked they way they changed hero for the last one too.

I was reading recently the Insomniac had plans for resistance 4 but Sony didn't want it. Ted Price was saying in a recent interview that 4 was his favourite pitch for a game that never got made.

Hopefully rumours of the remastered trilogy reignite that old pitch. Sony badly need a good shooter.

who remembers nintendo64 games? southpark snowball game is still in my heart

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,522 ✭✭✭RedXIV

I know the south park games were panned when they were released and def are not shining examples of gaming excellence, but I'd be lying if the PSX one didn't have a special place in my memories from when my brother and I rented it out and laughed all night throwing farting dolls and yellow snowballs at each other

I kind of just found the whole thing awful. It was very obvious the dev team had no time to make it as they had previously made Turok which was great.

Messed around with the hit box for a bit over the weekend. Man that's a different beast altogether. Kinda fun though, like you say, very tactile feel to it compared to controller. Main thing to get used to is the position of the up/jump button. The one I bought also has a button for up/jump above the down button, similar to a wasd layout, but trying to get used to the lower thumb one.

Stuck with Hwoarang though rather than a new character, feels easier to recognise when I'm not hitting moves I should be, compared to trying to also learn a new characters moves/combos.

Going to take a bit (well, lots and lots) of practice, but definitely a fun way to play.

Near the end of Metaphor Refantazio… and have been for the last 15-20 hours or so 😅 Almost certainly the longest late game I’ve encountered in a while. Probably have a good 10 hours left to go too if I was to guess.

I’d be annoyed at the multiple climactic battles followed by copious downtime, but thankfully the combat and archetype (job) systems really come into their own around now. Not as punishing as an SMT game, but still you really need to be thinking about your builds. Also should have just enough time to wrap up all I need to before progressing to the final boss. Seems more designed to allow you to max out what you need compared to the Persona games.

After finishing Max Payne and bouncing around some old arcadey titles like SSX I had started looking again for something good to get stuck into.

I played through Metroid Prime Remastered a couple of years ago and loved it, and I had always intended to play the rest of the trilogy but the awkward controls always put me off. Was very happy to learn over the weekend that there’s a specific offshoot of dolphin purely to modernise the Metroid prime trilogy and it’s installed as part of EmuDeck.

Started Echoes last night and plays like a dream, that will keep me busy for a while!

This is the exact sort of random tip I hope to stumble across once in a while, cheers!

Trying to get into Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Man the trouble with these games is how long they take to get going. Have only been able to manage about half an hour at a time because i get bored and want to stop. That and the horrible camera during combat. Will keep pushing through though as I know they become ridiculously enjoyable and addictive once they get going.

Finished Prince of Persia. Brilliant game, one of the best Metroidvanias I've played.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,796 ✭✭✭✭The Nal

The new one? Only gave it an hour and havent been back. Assume theres more to it than running and slashing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,559 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah you get more abilities (combat and traversal) as you progress, which allows you into new areas, helps you solve puzzles etc. It can feel slow at the start alright, but it gets really tricky as you progress and have to use and combine newer abilities for traversal puzzles or against enemies (basically, a Metroidvania).

It's a fantastic game. Really well designed and the best thing Ubisoft has done in years.

Its success of course meant Ubisoft went on to give the team additional resources and opportunities to further develop their talents and design ideas either via a sequel or original ideas.

Hold on, I’m just being passed a note here…
