Clearly those shovelware games they removed have some pi$$ed off fans.

    PSN back up for me.

Partially up for me. Some games like Tekken couldn't be played online. A bunch of options in the PS5 settings also couldn't be accessed.

Was saying in the PS Portal thread that it's farcical that the PS Portal doesn't work during PSN down time. I know it's fairly infrequent that it's down but it's a bit of a joke that a PSN outage bricks your Portal.

Did you miss going out on the wagons in Red Dead Online while PSN was down? 😉

To be honest, I can't really see how it's farcical. No games are stored on the Portal, so it needs PSN on the Portal, and PSN on your console, to play games. If PSN is down, no games. Even if there's a power cut your Portal is bricked because your PS5 won't be on and you won't have Internet for the cloud streaming. Hell, PSN being down bricked my PS5 because it locked me out of all my games since I only have the Digital version and hadn't activated whatever setting in the sharing menu.

Portal is entirely based around streaming through your PS5 via PSN. If PSN is down, I wouldn't expect the Portal to work at all.

Anyway, Sony have said everything's back up and running, and will be extending people's PS+ memberships by 5 days due to the downtime, which is pretty fair since it was only down for a day.

Could it not just connect to your PS5 via your home WiFi and check to see if you have a license for the game you want to play?

Not knowing anything about the system I would have thought this was what happens all the time but obviously not then?

No, the main thing about the Portal is that it's just streaming your home PS5. It's essentially a screen and controller, and you're playing your PS5 with it rather than through a TV. So if you can't play the game on your PS5 (for whatever reason), you can't play it on Portal. It's because the games are stored and accessed on your PS5, not on the Portal.

They have introduced cloud streaming of games through your PS+ Premium account, where there are about 150 games you can play via cloud streaming even if your PS5 is off. But again, if your Internet is down, or PSN itself is down, you can't use cloud streaming.

I've a Portal and it's a great wee machine for the most part. But with PSN down yesterday, I knew it was bricked and wouldn't have expected different, because it is entirely dependent on PSN at both ends (Portal side and PS5/cloud side) as there are no games stored on the Portal itself.

Yeah i get that but if my PlayStation has WiFi, and my Portal has WiFi (particularly within the same WiFi network) , it should be able to connect. I know it's not designed that way and I get that I need to be able to connect to my PlayStation to play as its a screen controller but if they are both online it seems silly that the PSN should have anything to do with it as all I'm doing is streaming a screen.

Kingdom Come 2 added Let Me Solo Her legend from Elden Ring. Nice gesture from the devs.

I started playing EA WRC again a few days ago. A challenging game, but for me, the Tour de Corse is mental torture.

Came back to it recently again myself. Has my flirting with buying a steering wheel. But then I'll need the seat...…😄

If you want to know how badly managed videogames are, I was listening to a podcast with a guy that works as a consultant for triple A games, basically assesses the state the game is in and gives feedback. He once told a project director that their game had too many fetch quests.

The directors response: "what's a fetch quests".

This is gas, Luke voices one of the main characters in Kingdom Come Deliverance 1 and 2. He's always interacting with the community, even got a tattoo done in honour or his role. He was hyping a stream he would be doing of the new game. The chat noticed some things like the opening logo being different, characters looking different, graphics problems, bugs etc that weren't in the launch version. Turns out he was playing a beta build that was a year old 😂.

Anyone have any thoughts on Pentiment, Inkulnati or What The Golf? All on sale and am mulling over them.

Pentiment is fascinating. Perhaps overlong and mostly just walking and talking, but superb writing and period detail throughout. Looks stunning too.

What The Golf? I've only played on phone but is entertaining and funny. Mostly just a punchline delivery game as opposed to anything more robust, though.

Be interesting to see the reviews on Avowed tomorrow, being obsidian and all. I'm sure that there'll be plenty of jank, but still, I'm interested.

Was listening to a podcast and there was a consultant on for triple A games. It wasn't really about their work but they were saying they basically look at the state a game is in and suggest ways to make it better. Some interesting stuff there like how they try to stop logs being lore dumps and make them more personal and the gross mismanagement that leads to extended dev times.

Anyway this person was talking to a game director and told them that their main story had way too many fetch quests.

The game directors response: what's a fetch quests.

I am downloading it at the moment on my Series X and looking forward to trying it. To be honest, if it wasn't for Game Pass Ultimate I probably would have not gone near it.

Should have told him to go get him a marker and then when he returns tell him to go back and get a whiteboard too so he could explain it. Real teaching moment missed there.

New Onimusha game looks brilliant. Used to love those games. Hell is Us looks tidy too. No idea what was going on with Dreams of Another but colour me intrigued! Liked the look of Mindseye too.

And Days Gone remastered... Someone hold Retr0 back.

Nothing that I was hoping to see mind, but that's Days of Play for ya.

Days Gone Remastered, but also three Armoured Core re-releases.

Is Sony reading this thread and trying to balance things out?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 11,373 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

State of Play highlights for me were the Shinobi game, Saros (new single player IP from the Returnal gang) and the Lies of P dlc - that looks brilliant!

New Housemarque game sounds like a spiritual successor to Returnal, which I am very much here for. Probably the most interesting first party PS studio at the moment.

Darwin’s Paradox looks like Inside. Most of the games looked dark, bleak and tired to be honest (IMHO). Looking forward to something cheerful, colourful and fun from Nintendo in April.
