"Only" €225k to sponsor Doireann's new 2FM show, I suppose a state or semi state company will bankroll this to keep RTÉ afloat 🤔

They don't know how to program a radio station targeted for the 15-34 age demographic so they continue or revert back to their old (and only way they know how to do things) ways. That is: Flood the radio station with folks who are not genuine music broadcasters but rather so called 'names' whose performances are generally substandard and of course represented by a particular 'talent' agency. They have never addressed what the true expectations are of their core listener demographic and what it really wants to hear from a radio station. When it comes to 2fm, the DG is being directed by a clueless PD, so the only people who really win are agencies like NKM, their clients and select listeners within that 6.1%.

I’d actually like to read that full article but behind a paywall and I am not paying for the indo. Can anyone give a synopsis - esp. re the NKM elements?

Sounds like Robbie Keane and his "its been my boyhood dream to play for x (fill in name of club here)"

be unheard of really, maybe on her last day but they usually keep quiet in the hope of coming back one day (or they are contractually bound to not say anything). Its been a usual occurrence the past few years for presenters on 2FM to vanish overnight, the first anyone knowing is when their names are taken off the schedule and replaced with a generic "weekend on 2fm" type thing.

It’s just a coincidence of course that Kathryn Thomas said the same thing when she got the Q102 gig.

It’s almost like there’s a playbook on things to say in certain situations and occasions…..

How do you properly interpret those JNLR figures when the percentages exceed 100%?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 909 ✭✭✭TheBMG

because you can listen to more than one radio station in a 24 hour period.

Listened yesterday is how many people you’ve reached.

Market share is how long they listen for.

You can be the most listened to radio station in a market without having the most listeners.

if you listen to 2FM yesterday for 10 minutes, but you listened to Spin for forty minutes it means they both have the same reach but Spin is more listened to. Hope this makes some sense.

So they’ve Aisling Bonner on their books now. Amazing how nk still have both feet in the door

so Doireann is on late late show to plug her new radio slot. I guess they’ve to do something to try and get people to listen to it.

Cross promotion. LLS fabs might possibly give the site a listen. Doireann fans might tune in to see her. In the eve two sub standard shows fong amount to one good show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,084 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Doireann doesn't seem to pull in an audience, look at her interview with Tubs on his podcast, at least on YouTube.

Strange to see Gift Grub on the show promoting Today FM :)

mario has been on the late late show countless times - that doesn't mean he directly is promoting today fm !! he usually does some impressions and mentions his tour.

kathryn thomas is on too - perhaps her Q102 show will come up in conversation ?? or maybe it won't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,084 ✭✭✭RoTelly

To many perhaps, I was just mentioning that its interesting to see Today FM - Morning Show, Q102 - Morning Show and the new RTÉ 2FM Drive show being represented.

I don't see why Thomas's new radio show shouldn't come up TBH.

I wonder if Doireann will do some impressions!

I caught the first hour of the new breakfast show on 2fm. I’ve liked Carl Mullen anytime I’ve listened to him on the radio. Hadn’t heard aishling before but she seems alright at that time of the morning, her voice didn’t go through me, which is always a plus when listening to radio. I know Roz Purchell has been on 2fm for a bit before now, but never listened to her.

Not a bad first hour that I heard.

What’s the point I having the show getting called with a single presenters name when they’ve a couple of staffers in with them the whole time. Is it just because they’re in the seat with the buttons

Not a glowing review for Doireann's first show:

No but at the same time it reads as a defense to her return

restoring some celeb lustre to a line-up that has looked threadbare since she left last May alongside her Dancing with the Stars cohost

Why does any station need "star" power? Surely a good presenter is what you are looking for

While Garrihy is a seasoned radio performer, however, with five years’ experience on the 2FM breakfast slot, this is her first stint as a solo presenter.

Seasoned is the word, she should be able to start off well without the need a critic to say "maybe she will settle into the role", also she had a few months on her own on the breakfast show.

the first programme goes off as well as can be expected.

So it was perfect from a seasoned presenter.

obviously too early to gauge how Garrihy’s second tenure at 2FM will turn out

Is it, it's only been a few months since she left.

She’s only a presenter, not a miracle worker.

But that's why she's on the big bucks and is being brought back.

She left and should have been left to get on with the rest of her career outside of 2FM. I’d even say outside of RTE but she’ll always get hosting duties in independent tv productions. At the time she left I’d have pulled in a talented jock from elsewhere and given them the gig. She left, I’m sure, so she could get married and rake in the freebies for the duration and now back to 2FM for a handy regular pay check. Instead of welcoming these influencer types with open arms back into the fold the door should be closed. Otherwise it just looks like they’re bigger than 2FM. Even back in the days of GRyan who was a great broadcaster, I never got the sense he thought he was bigger than 2FM. He was though a huge draw as witnessed by the void after his death but I think he knew what side his bread was buttered on. There was none of the “I’m resigning… now I’m back” bluster. Marty Whelan took years to get back after leaving fur century. The people running 2FM need to act like they’ve some respect for themselves and their brand. Letting self promoters walk all over the station isn’t the way forward

    @squonk

Marty Whelan took years to get back after leaving for century.

I agree with all you say but for this.

Marty moved to Century it closed in Nov 1991, by the following year he was presenting "Go For It" a BBC NI/RTÉ co-pro, by 1993 he was presenting his own prime time chat show "Off the Record", by 1994 he was presenting that along with 12.2.1

I am sure his Daz ads were between 1991 and 1992.

I hadn’t realised that. I certainly don’t render the shows. In my recollection he made it back later and was kind of rehabilitated by Winning Streak. I had heard himself mention he was out in the cold fur a while after joining century.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,084 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Before he joined Century he had been presenting where in the world, as soon as he left he was no longer on TV in RTÉ and was replaced by Threase Lowe.

Prior to him presenting winning streak he'd presented Open House a replacement for PM LIVE (which he also co-hosted), which was itself a replacement for Live @ 3 and 12 to 1.

I think he moved to winning streak after Open House ended but there might have been a few years in the early 2000s but that was long after century.

And yes I know far too much about this shite

Marty Whelan did a stint as breakfast presenter on 2FM some years later in the mid '00s after Ian Dempsey had long gone to Today FM. He was then moved to his current home Lyric FM. According to Wikipedia, the show name "Marty in the Morning" was carried over from 2FM. He was replaced on 2FM at the time with Colm and Jim-Jim (Jim Nugent) from FM104. Jim eventually returned to FM104 and some years later Colm went first to Radio Nova and then to Classic Hits, where he is now. Incidentally, Marty had previously presented the breakfast show on 2FM between 1985 and March 1988, when he was succeeded by Ian Dempsey. He resumed as breakfast show host again between March and April 1989 for a few weeks - presumably that is when he had to leave because he was going to Century Radio. Ian replaced Marty again as the permanent host in July of that year until his departure in 1998 to Today FM.

    Fully agree.

I questioned if DG was strong enough on her own but it appears she isn’t. Who are the other two?

On a side note, and without wishing to derail the thread, I was in a location which had Today FM on and Ray Foley was on. I’ve always been a big fan of Foley, but it occurred to me that he also had co-hosts with him and as far as I can remember, he always has, even way back in Spin.

If you need a few people in the studio with you to create a good show, are you that going of a host? Or am I being harsh?

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 11,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭squonk

I don’t think you are. Coming from the pov of being a radio fan in the 80s almost all shows were hosted by a single jock, on 2FM. They’re would be guests for sure but the shows were helmed by competent presenters. It was in the 90s the “crew” thing crept in. Zig and Zag on the breakfast show and Brendan O’Carroll on Gareth O’Callaghan although Mrs Brown was a feature more than a co presenter. I think if Ian Dempsey/GRyan/Barry Lang etc could run a show on they’d own then if you can’t then you’re not really a presenter.

I know by my measure people like Steve Wright don’t qualify but people like Steve are a breed apart. He could do a show easily on his own but brought people in to make a better show. The people with Steve in the studio weren’t there to dig him out.

Where Zig and Zag on the Breakfast so that much to be considered co-hosts?
