No. Leinster never announce contract length. 2 years is standard but I heard the 1 year rumours too. Who knows ultimately - I guess we'll find out soon enough.

They'd probably feel just about ok with Prendergast, Frawley and Tector with Gabriel to get a game or two.

I'd hope that Connacht are already in the process of making a very good offer to Harry this Summer too. Obviously it'll be up to Leinster if he's still under contract and Harry himself if we want's to move West.

Connacht do have some issues but Harry could go a long way to solving a few of them while improving as a player himself. We're in dire need of an out half who can manage a game, and kick well, while still facilitating the attacking game we want to play. Of our squad only Carty has those attributes but his body has taken too much toil to start regularly, and he makes too many unforced errors. We're still missing some power in the second row and lack tactical nuance in our exits and general kicking game, but a really good out half could make both of those less problematic.

The big open question for me as a Connacht fan is what quality Irish players are hearing back on the grapevine about the instability of our coaching situation? We hear little enough ourselves as supporters but the player community is very small if someone wants a quiet off the record chat.

Ala'altoa signed a 1 year deal in 2023 so they do, do them.

Gloucester Rugby confirm the signing of Ross Byrne. Will be sad to see him go. Great player for Leinster and never had any worries when he was starting in Sexton's absence.

Byrne, Molony and Ruddock have all left or are leaving. They were a huge part of Leinster continuing to rack up points in the absence of the test players. We need the younger play rs to start stepping up now.

Best of luck to him, a great player for us over the years.

Tommy O'Brien is starting at 14 for Ireland. Hope for his sake that he makes it through the game unscathed and performs well.

Frawley starts at 10 so clearly Ireland is still looking at him as a viable third option there. Deegan captains at blindside.

Six Leinster players on the bench. Soroka had an impressive Emerging Ireland tour and has played well for us since returning. Hope he goes well again.

It is sad to see Ross go but his inability to play closer to the gain line is what cost him his spot at Leinster. He was way too comfortable sitting deeper just so he wouldn't get smashed and it cost him his spot with Ireland and Leinster because it hindered the attack. Now that is not me saying Byrne is a bad player, he was really good on his day for Leinster and was and will continue to be a fantastic servant for Leinster until the end of the season but I just wish he played a less conservative brand of rugby because the rest of his game is international standard and Gloucester are getting themselves a top player who will be one of the best fly halves in the Premiership in the next 12 months.

Best of luck Ross! Do us proud.

This move further demonstrates why the belief held by a vocal group that 'moving around Leinster players' is a credible solution to any problem is incredibly lazy and unsupported by evidence. Players are human and can't be shuffled around like in a computer game. Even if they are under contract, the IRFU can't force them to move to another province.

Another factor possibly influencing this move is Leinster's budget being impacted by new rules. The simplistic analysis that anyone leaving Leinster would end up in other provinces overlooks the fact that players must want to make the move. As a previous poster mentioned, each province needs to convince departing Leinster players of their plans, and currently, none seem particularly appealing compared to decent offers abroad.

In reality, a significant group just wants Leinster weakened. They will feign 'a loss to Irish rugby' but will be satisfied. While losses like this do chip away at their depth, it also opens the door for the next academy player to step up.

Ross had a great career here, hopefully the team can get it over the line this year and he can leave with a few more medals.

Looking at last weekends Ospreys game and today's Wales game, I think Jack Boyle might be the real deal. Winning scrum penalties all over the shop.

Has to be ahead of Healy, surely

Jack Boyle has made his mark. Safe to put Cian to a well earned retirement

Frawley took an awful knock to the head in the Ireland A game and failed his HIA. No chance he's available for the Cardiff game next weekend.

Harry Byrne also failed a HIA. Bad day for 10's.

I'm perfectly happy to see Ross Byrne start anyway, but I guess it will be Tector covering 10 then.

To be honest Leinster need to start prioritising a back up 10 option anyway, with Ross leaving and H.byrne and Frawley both made out of cracked porceline. Options to start giving game time at 10 would be Gabriel and Tector, sooner rather than later

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,944 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

Have we played Tector at 10 this season? I'd have thought he'd be the natural choice, given how he did for the u20s

I don't think so. They seem to be transitioning him to 12, but not sure we have a lot of options. Seems way too early for Gabriel (albeit I suspect he'll get quite a bit of game time next season).

We have so many centres though. Osborne, Frawley, Turner, JOB, and that's before we get to the Academy lads coming through. Out the ears with them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,016 ✭✭✭Ciaran

We had four senior outhalfs at the start of the season too so there wasn't much room there either.

Why does Ross Byrne moving to Gloucester and out of the Irish system prove anything other than he would prefer to leave Ireland than play for Ulster or Connacht and probably Munster? Moving players in areas where Leinster are stacked and other provinces are weak while keeping them in the Irish system seems to be a good solution to at least a couple of problems I could list anyway. Maybe not every problem but few things are.

RB moving within Ireland wouldn't make any difference from an Irish team perspective, he's out of the picture there for good. The argument about moving players is relevant to younger guys at eh start of their careers who, with the opportunity to start more games, might develop into test players at other provinces where they might not have those opportunities at Leinster.

Ross moved for improved money and a chance to be undisputed number 1.

    Rumoured/reported money in England

    AJ McGinty on 400k

    Hastings on 450k

    Maloney getting 250k

Despite what some internet nonsense goes on Leinster are not paying players crazy sums.

I don't think the provinces can rival that money for a player not in Irish squads even if Irish qualified

I think we should probably apply the same skepticism to reported numbers in English rugby.

I have to think Ross would command a top wage. Played in multiple HC finals, including starting for all of the knock outs. Internationally capped. He'll be a brilliant OH at the Premiership level. He has every skill imo, bar a complete absence of fast twitch fibers.

Don't they have to publish them for the salary cap?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 396 ✭✭El Vino

I used to do some work with Gloucester when Humphreys was DOR there. At that time every club was allowed two signings outside the salary cap and they couldn't be recruited from a premiership club, had to come from outside. I think it was Xavier Rush and John Afoa at the time definitely the latter. I presume Ross would take one of these slots if it still works that way.

Last I heard they had reduced it down to one marquee player outside the salary cap.

It would be a feather in Byrne's cap if Gloucester did have him as their marquee player. I think Finn Russell is Bath's marquee player and he's supposed to be on £1 million or something. But of course not every club will have as big a backer as Bruce Craig.

Well one thing is for certain, that's money that will never buy Bath a title…
