Yeah definitely. I've more than enough games in my backlog to last me 3 lifetimes. Honestly I've been waiting for years for the hypothetical crash in videogames when nothing but Ubisoft style games come out so I can catch up on my backlog but honestly we have never had it better.

Easily as there are so many games out there that I never played even all the old ones that you can play on emulators.

Replaying games can be fun too especially if you space replaying them out over a few years.

Just to update. My criteria and algorithms were off because Legend of Dragoon, aka the worst game ever, sells for stupid money as well.

I'm just after putting the controller down after an hour or so of Tekken 8, a game out over a year ago, where I'm still playing as the same character, have put over 350 hours into since release, and with the latest 60 level battlepass ending today, I reached level 115.

So yeah, I'd absolutely stay gaming, between my own (ever-growing) backlog, games I've never played, and just replaying favourites.

If anything, if they stopped releasing new games I might actually have the time and patience to become actually good at the ones I do play.

Along these lines, one of my new years resolutions is to not go near any new game without clearing at least 3 games out of my backlog.

I haven’t bought anything new yet this year and there’s nothing really on my radar which makes it a bit easier! But this weekend I’ve settled on the Max Payne trilogy. Never played them properly before but have been sitting in my steam account for years.

The first game took a bit of setting up, doesn’t work with the steam deck without a fix but there’s great instructions online for doing so. Got it up and running with high-res textures pretty swiftly and played for a couple of hours last night. It looks dated and is pretty repetitive but the bullet time mechanic is still very satisfying and I think the game itself is pretty short so I can’t see it outstaying its welcome.

One thing I’ll say though is it’s definitely not suited to using a controller, I tried in handheld mode for a few minutes before plugging it into my work PC dock, which was MUCH better. Should clear it off this week and will see if I want to go straight into 2 or will start bouncing around again!

I installed a few backlog games over Christmas, in order to force myself to start playing through them, and instead of playing them I'm playing Tekken 8 and looking at Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and Avowed and thinking of getting them…

I did play Cyberpunk 2077 a few weeks ago which had been on my backlog for a while and really glad I did go for it. Actually just starting a new game is always the hard part because a lot of the time I just want to jump right into a game I know, mostly shut the brain off rather than focusing on new controls, systems, mechanics etc, and just waste an hour or two.

I started playing Bioshock last night. Creepy and scary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,581 ✭✭✭McFly85

Rapture is one of the all time great video game locations, loved that game.

The only issue I remember it having is:

There’s no incentive to do anything but save all of the little sisters - you get more than enough Adam if you do it even though the game suggests you have to choose between altruism or power.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,245 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I love how Bioshock looks but in retrospect I don't think it holds up that well. The little sister thing is way too black and white and I kind of feel the characters are the same, way too black and white. I much prefer the story of Bioshock 2 as the characters and motivations are a bit more believable.

I don't feel the combat holds up either and the pipedream monogame gets old fast. It feels even worse now than when I played it as since then I've played System Shock 2 and Bioshock really is just a poor man's system shock 2 remake, I'd rather replay that game than Bioshock. The game also really falls flat after the big reveal.

I've gone back to it since and always drop it, it kind of feels like a product of its time.

Is it your first time playing it?

I played it years ago at release and thought it was good but I forget it now since it's so long since I played it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,921 ✭✭✭Wossack

I never took to the original 2, but was a big system shock 2 fan back in the day, so maybe that tainted it for me.
Really liked bioshock infinite though, which felt a bit controversial at the time too mind

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,245 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Bioshock Infinite is a gorgeous game but there's a lot I don't like about it and one thing that's pretty disgusting. The combat just isn't that interesting, and the move from the more open levels of Bioshock to a linear shooter made it boring. The story is pretty pretentious as well, being complicated doesn't mean it's clever and it ends up saying nothing.

But the absolute worst thing about the game is exploring racism with the "well if the shoe was on the other foot" argument which is a straight up racist dog whistle. I mean I've heard enough zionists use that excuse for what is going on in Gaza. Ken Levine was either using it as a dog whistle or is just a bit thick but either way it's not ok and trying to retcon one of the most controversial scenes in the game in the DLC wasn't fooling anyone.

jfyi, Avowed is quite good so far.

Indeed, it's reviewed quite well, and is apparently an excellent example of how to do a UE game right.

I use the Idance machine you can pick up from Smyth's. You can link that to your TV for lyrics if you want or just use a spare phone to hook up for YouTube/Spotify via Bluetooth. Decent sound out of it too.

I don't know about it being reviewed well, "respectable" and "professional" game review outlets like IGN gave it just 7/10.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,560 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

7/10 is a positive score and seems like a perfectly reasonable one for a game you yourself described simply as 'quite good'.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,777 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatInABox

In my mind, "well" is 7 or 8, "great" being 9 or 10.

As much as I am loath to use them, metacritic has it on 80, which is firmly in the "well" category for me.

If anything, the game's overall reception is leaning more positive than I was expecting and even going by some of the reviews and podcasts I've read / heard. I've seen a pretty wide range of opinions on it - many loved the exploration and had a good time, but others really disliked the combat and writing and had a fairly underwhelming time with it. So on balance yeah I'd say 7-8/10 seems like the median alright, allowing for some that skew either higher or lower.

I'll give it a try at some stage as I do like to see Obsidian succeed, but trying to wrap up Metaphor Refantazio at the moment and there's a Monster Hunter sized hole in my gaming time from next week :)

Honestly, I love the semi open world structure that Obsidian go for, much prefer the curated world experience that it brings.

Just ordered a leverless hitbox controller for fighting games. Determined to try and become ever-so-slightly better at Tekken 8, but some of the inputs required for the best combos (particularly for Hwoarang) are damn-near impossible to do on controller.

Going to be a strange but hopefully fun experience learning to use it, and maybe in time it'd make me more inclined to try Street Fighter again, because that's one where the inputs on controller (eg. trying to do something like double quarter-circle forward) just always felt so iffy to me and I could never get the hang of them.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,245 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

My advice, don't expect to be amazing on a stick from the off. There's a learning curve to it and it will be a bit frustrating at the start. For fighting games you should try and move the stick for it to register but not enough for it to ride the restrictor gate. That's the hardest part to get used to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,562 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah I'm definitely going to have to reset my entire muscle memory for it, and it'll take a few weeks of practice to start being in any way decent with it. That's why I'm half thinking of using it for T8 on PC instead of PS5, and use it as an opportunity to learn a new character too (though I did get a converter so I can use it on PS5 as well).

It's a leverless controller though, no stick. Having a finger on each of the directional inputs should help rather than controller where it's just thumb doing all the work.

    image.png

Even then one of my main issues is that some of Hwoarang's inputs are really difficult on controller. For instance switching stance then directly into backlash (one of his main combo-extending moves) requires pressing X+O, then X~O (meaning X then O with no frame gaps or overlap between, you essentially have to swipe your thumb across the buttons to hit it). Doing that in the middle of a combo, even with X+O bound to the R2 button, is just something I can't do with any consistency. I think some people hold the controller in a claw-type fashion to make it similar to a pad like the above.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,245 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Ah yes I've seen those and heard good things about them.

I know Tekken is different as there's way more moves in it than street fighter but even in street fighter you would stick to easy to confirm bread and butter combos, anything with a window greater than 3 frames (and even then I'd leave the 3 frame windows to when you are really good) was just there for styling on someone or if you desperately needed it. There's probably a lot of moves in Tekken you can safely ignored.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,562 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah I have a lot of Hwoarang's main moveset down, and a lot of it ignored because it's too circumstantial or risky. That would be the same with every character in Tekken given how huge their movelists are. I've just hit a bit of a barrier because there are moves that are kind of key to extend certain combos and get that extra bit of damage and I just can't pull them off.

Learning to use the leverless might help, but also might not. It'll give greater control over directional inputs, and help with things like button buffering. Still though, I'm looking at it more as something interesting to try and learn rather than something that will have me rocking up to Evo any time soon.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,245 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It kind of sounds like you are trying to learn some 1 frame input combos which even the best of the best avoid. Might be worth looking at how people play your main in evo. If they aren't extending their combos using those tricks then there's a good reason they aren't. If they are then get in the training room.

When you get so into a game that you buy dedicated controller hardware:

Do consoles count as dedicated hardware ?

My bad, I meant really good kind of good, not acceptable and almost not bad kind of good. As in 8/10 or more, to be more precise.
