@magicbastarder Read that last night on the Irish Examiner, all while he was out on bail also. Seriously though, what's wrong with sentencing in this country? Is it solely down to lack of prison space or are judges so far removed from reality. Somewhat related I see the Hayes brothers were only given 2 and 2 1/2 year sentences for beating their friend to an inch of his life. It was so vicious that when they put him back in his car as he couldn't move himself they had to straighten his keys that were bent from the beating.

@AndrewJRenko Agreed, see it all the time when cycling through Dublin city centre along the quays and up through the Phoenix Park, phones and screens lit with all sorts of video chats and shows. One morning at 06:30 a few weeks back a motor cyclist pulled up beside me at red lights with his phone handlebar mounted showing a soccer game, I would have expected better from a similar two wheeled commuter who should be more atune to the surrounding dangers.

Another shocking RTA in Carlow in the early hours of this morning, almost exactly to the year of another one which killed 3 young people. All the talk on the radio being of 'dangerous bends' and the local county councillor essentially blaming An Bord Pleanala for not having approved the road straightening plans. No mention or discussion whatsoever of the elephant in the room. It seems its just impossible to have an adult conversation about the issues involved.

Feedback displays installed 18 months ago in a 50kph zone show passing drivers their speed. Data extracted showed an average 1,061 vehicles passed daily. 86% of all vehicles passing through >50kph, with average speed of 83kph.

Senior council officials said because speeding is becoming a big issue.. they will provide gardaí with all the council’s speed analysis from now on.

Why can't they do this nationwide? And publicise it monthly.. Is it because it is unpopular or hiding behind GDPR?

" they will provide gardaí with all the council’s speed analysis from now on."

what do they expect the gardai to do with it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,204 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Would make an interesting FOI request. In the past, Councils specifically avoided downloading the detailed data so it couldn't be released.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,204 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Sure look it, it's all a 'tragic accident' according to Virgin Media News, who had Councillor Barry blaming the 'dangerous roads', carefully avoiding any suggestion that drivers should slow TF down.

But still... Why the gardai? There's nothing in the data that can be actioned by them.

Embarrass them into taking action on road safety in areas shown to have speeding issues?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,903 ✭✭✭✭zell12

Dunno if that is possible, in the same garda district..

“I've seen this in operation near the Blair Inn licensed premises. It appears motorists gravitate to make the sign 'smile', which means their speed is reduced," Sgt Lehane wrote in his report. Supt Moore said he agreed with Sgt Lehane's appraisal of the situation. He also said it appears motorists want to make the sign smile and would thus slow down to do so.

Appears, as we observed them. Yes, it's the sign, not the garda monitoring the sign that causes them to slow.

Highlights from today's drive on the N11… 29 minute traffic delay between Newtown MtK and end of Kilmac, at least 50% of which had to have been caused by drivers clogging up the two Kilpedder rat runs as once they were cleared traffic flowed at a steady pace. People are just thick and ignorant. And asshats, going by the driver who undertook me at speed across chevrons to hop into the joining lane, just so he could use that 100m to skip ahead of 20 or so cars and rejoin the dual carriageway.

If I had to commute by car everyday I wouldn't be long losing my sanity.

Thank God we have diligent county councillors looking out for us…

Drivers ‘may be entitled to legal redress’ under new speed limits on rural roads in Tipperary | Irish Independent

I'm fairly certain that I heard Conor Faughnan on the radio the other day saying that the changes to the speed limits are changes to the default speed limits which only apply if the local authority haven't set a speed limit for any particular road? In other words, that there's nothing to stop local authorities applying what they believe to be appropriate speed limits?

    In any event, good to see his focus is on "ridiculously low limits" and not 'dangerous bends'. Not sure what relevance the fact that he's a commissioner for oaths is? Of more interest is this evidence of his character;

Councillor trainer wrongly claimed State accreditation

    Clown.

EDIT: speaking of efforts to tackle road safety and the main cause of deaths on our roads…

Limerick drivers’ outrage over new permanent speed camera on busy county road | Irish Independent

    "the green agenda"… jesus wept.

Meanwhile… over 2,200 drivers caught speeding in 5 days, bearing in mind the paucity of speed cameras/ checkpoints…

"Green agenda" - you'd wonder why the Independent would give that kind of misinformation any oxygen at all….unless….

Claire Byrne had a good piece on earlier on the upcoming L road reductions. A Garda chief super and somebody senior from TII explaining the rationale, pointing to evidence of major and immediate KSI reductions where introduced elsewhere, and none of this "balanced debate" nonsense you'd get on Cartalk where they prop some knuckle dragger upright to shout whatabouteries for 10 minutes of your life you'll never get back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,903 ✭✭✭✭zell12

Heard some of that. Travelling 80kph means 90% chance of fatality, versus much lower chance at 60kph speed. Gave the example of Cyprus doing same in 2018. She also said Garda would be out enforcing new limits on the 7th

I can actually picture the driver spouting that bile into his phone while hammering down a country lane before the bookies shut.

They'll still be blaming the Green in the future when they'll have been out of government for years

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 26,061 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

Just read the "Blame everything on the Greens thread", possibly after hours. It is shocking how little some people understand about how government and the EU work. The Greens seem to get the blame for all the ills of the last government but none of the acknowledgement of many of the things they actually achieved. Pity, not a Green myself but I appreciate the sticking to the plan and not taking the credit for the things that work, which is alas, there downfall everytime they get in..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,353 ✭✭✭Paddigol

Too many people are generally thick/ selfish or a combination of both… character traits that the current wave of populist politicians across the globe have been openly taking advantage of with ever increasing brazenness over the past 10 years.

Imagine… a political party with a clear manifesto, voted in with a strong mandate to give effect to said manifesto, deliver on said mandate… and are promptly rejected by the same electorate whose vocal gripe with Govt. lies with departments outside Green influence - health/ housing/ finance/ security etc. We get what we deserve.

Meanwhile in the UK, calls for taxing and licensing cyclists have gone quiet all of a sudden…

Major train line blocked after car crashed on to tracks

I'm talking tongue in cheek, obviously. But it's a salient point (i.e. motor vehicles are a multitude more harmful to society when things go wrong than bicycles) that's quickly forgotten every time there's the annual clickbait-driven call for a bike tax/ registration plates etc. We must also be overdue a bridge or level crossing strike in Dublin?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 26,061 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

There are bridge strikes regularly in Dublin, always one of two things. A truck who refuses to accept that the bridge is at the height described or a car loses control for a variety of stupid reasons. It's quite possible many aren't even reported.

Surprised this has not been mentioned on this thread. It was a particularly callous act.

Two years for killing a child having broken a red light. Judge should retire to his library with a brandy and a pistol- a thundering disgrace.

At least, the driver is going to jail, which is a rare enough occurance.

    Fair play to the judge for calling out the danger of these oversized tanks;

"In sentencing, Judge Sheehan said that the Ford Ranger Wildtrak driven by Moynihan was "not really a car but a pick up truck". People who drive these vehicles in urban areas where there are a lot of houses have an increased burden (of care). It is not the same as driving a car."

There's no mention of the driver's phone being checked for activity, which is probably the most likely explanation for a distracted driver.

I think he might be a bit soft in general; he told Kyle Hayes on date of verdict he'd get a sentence and then at sentence hearing set him off on a suspended sentence. He's barely on bench 2 years, at a guess he's got 10 years to retirement.

Was it the lights at Janeville or further towards town centre?

Child had no chance with one of those trucks.

Everyones life has value but a child hits me harder when lost. No disrespect, or lack of compassion, to those who have lost people who are not children. To me it is a volume of potential that will never be realised and can never be measured. A life that will never be lived, a friend that now won't be there for another, a series of potential generations lost in a family, a potential addition to humanity that will lift us all. No parent should outlive their child, as such a pain is cruel beyond words.

The fact that the father realised the brake lights never even went on, the driver did not even notice what had happened.
