Use energypal.ie, much better than bonkers and the like. You need your HDF file from ESB Networks and it will work out which is the best one for you.

Often the best EV or night rate isn't the best one for you, since what you use during the day can easily outweigh that usage.

I'm with Energia - day rate ~24c/kWh and night ~14c/kWh including VAT. There's a peak rate between 5pm and 7pm which is a few cents more, but it doesn't really impinge.

I prefer to charge my car when it gets down to around 20% SoC, so a decent rate from 11pm to 8am suits me better.

The historic data is of no use since I now have an extra EV,solar panels, and the smart meter is only in a week! Because of this, I figure I just need to go for the lowest Day/Night rate for a year and then do a real comparison next year when everything has settled down.

In that case, that Energia plan looks about the best although I haven't checked for a while. A lot of those that have low rates for a few hours at night have pretty high daytime rates. I wanted to find a balance. Charging your car with 40kWh for €5.60 instead of €4 isn't significant if your cooker/shower/kettle is going to cost you a tenner more.

Never forget that these plans are designed to yield the most income for the supplier, and not the cheapest costs for the consumer.

we have an EV and are on BG's EV smart plan. If you have solar panels, your daytime costs are going to be fairly small for much of the year so the EV charging will make up a significant amount of your grid usage.

You do need to look at how much charge you can expect to get into the car in 3/4 hours though. We do modest mileage and 3 hours charge every second night keeps the battery topped up. If you're doing a couple hundred km every day you'll probably need to charge for 6 hours every night.

How many kms are would you be expecting to do each day and each week in the EV?

anyone know if energia axa offer is fixed rate or variable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 341 ✭✭tlaavtech

Typically 150km in the i3 and 250km in the Megane each week, not including the occasional longer trip around the country.

Just had a quick scan of the Energia website - quite disappointed in their standard plans on offer at the moment. Not that the Smart plans are much better, but really those d/n rates for Joe Citizen don't seem competitive at all, at all.

Isn't their 26c/12c day night rate the best available out there? Who's cheaper?

Yeah, that's the one I'm on. Energypal had it at the top of their list based on my usage. But having a look around, couldn't find anything better on a day/night rate. Bar the BWG one, but I couldn't access that.

I mean it's not as good as the community plans coming to an end shortly.

Despite the fact that wholesale electricity is cheaper than it was 12 months and significantly cheaper than 24 months ago.

Bit like car insurance, the energy plans across the providers are suddenly suspiciously similar as well.

And just being absolutely pernickety 🙈 it's 26c/13c.

Actually 25.89c/12.41c so the earlier poster P K was closer.

That's a D/N plan- Threshold is for overall amount of units then a slight price increase but doesn't affect me personally.

Something wrong with the Electric Ireland Home Electric+ Boost EV plan? Page loads, but sign up gives me an "error" page.

    https://www.electricireland.ie/residential/products/home-electric-night-boost-ev

energypal.ie says it's the best for €350 credit which covers the high standing charge. And with solar we only used about 350kWh of day rate last year. The 2 hour window sucks a bit for EV, but we don't do much driving so it should work for us.

Last year we paid just under €200 in electricity (including €425 of credits) and energypal says based on our HDF we'd spend just under €600 on this plan… if the page would load

It's working for me on the phone, I think you're mistaken with the 350, the 350 is towards the installation of a charge point it isn't actual credit. You need your seai letter of offer for the CP grant to get the 350, anyway I think it's a crap plan, 2 hours is useless. I'm a small mileage driver and even at that it takes a bit of planning using the BG 3 hour window.

Even if it stayed the same id be v happy. I see Energia are doing this rate also on the d/n meter so worse case scenario we could switch if Flogas are not competitive . For me - I much rather the d/n meter and the ability to charge cars, battery, run washing machine, dishwasher and emersion over the night over 9hrs rather than these 3 or 4 hour windows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,337 ✭✭✭obi604

True, I also run all that stuff overnight, If i tried to fit it in to that 2-6am window, could have a car charging, and maybe another on a 3 pin plug, dishwasher running, washing machine on etc could be maxing out.

I like to get car charged, then run dishwasher, then washing machine and then dryer when we wake up, I like to break them all up so not to put too much of a load.

Standard issue, I never renewed when the contract was ending to see what they were offering. They never contacted me when I left which was unusual, every other provider always made an attempt to get me to stay. The Energia smart plan for a standard smart meter is almost exactly those rates with the added bonus of the cheaper standing charge.

Same email except I'm on the smart plan with the peak.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,363 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

We have been on board gais EV rate for the last 11 months or so, they rang up there basically offering the same deal again.

Looked up energypal.ie with our HDF file filtered to the last 11 months (when we got the EV) and to my surprise we are better off not going for an EV rate. Energia data plan is cheaper for us than our current plant by €200+ a year. The energia plan is cheaper in general

4c cheaper on day rate - 40% of our usage

    13c cheaper on peak - 10%

    7c cheaper on night - 14%

6.5c more expensive on the EV rate (no EV rate, just the night rate) - 36%

So even do the EV hours is a good chunk of our usage, the cheaper rates in general more than makes up for it.

It's funny it's kind of will be disappointing in some ways to move away from the 7c EV rate because the direct comparison of how much the EV costs to run versus our ice car goes up! But I'll take that bragging rights hit for an overall cheaper price.

Will be interesting that next year's HDF file will be harder to compare as we'll have no incentive to try out the dryer on at 2am etc

Does the Energia standard day night play have a threshold and if yes, is only 1000kwh per two months?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,089 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

It isn't their day night plan it's their standard smart plan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,089 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Very same recommendation for me I'm with BG since July.

Nightsaver which is D/N 3000 day/2000 night per billing period.(The first paragraph - disregard the rest.)

Good to know. Our highest usage month was 1000kwh in total, so two months of that would be about 1000kwh on the night rate so should be easily covered.
