Minster Patrick O'Donovan, he might define Public Service Broadcasting to RTÉ so that he can then do the right thing and split the company up. So we can first consider what we want from public service broadcasting. I doubt it. Here is a politican who went into a committee room with RTÉ and asked why the repeat willy wonka at Christmas, surprising while I dislike repeats and RTÉ, I defend RTÉ on this, firstly a small bit of cinema history and secondly it gets 130k viewers each year!

Errr if RTE started to shitc*n NK roster members I say over 50% of there content would cease to exist.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,255 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Screen Producers Ireland had an promo running as to what RTÉ would be like without Indo producers, perhaps NK should do up something similar 😂

Or….she had her 6 months away where she could collect as many freebies as possible, and is now back into the warm embrace of the public teat. Expect a break or something in a year or so when she wants a free Berlingo or whatever

Indeed for example she won't have to declare her time at DWTS, that can wait for next year.

    https://www.thejournal.ie/rte-public-trust-6601541-Jan2025/

When asked whether it should have made the figure clear in its annual report, RTÉ said it would continue to use the current method.

“RTÉ’s Annual Report covers the entire year, not any specific quarter. This remains the case when figures go up, as well as down,” a spokesperson said.

“The figure you are referring to for Q3 is the lowest point over the course of 2023. These trust scores have increased since then,” it added.

Where is the leadership team to answer these questions?

69% - Before scandal (not meeting the 75% target, and as I pointed out in another tread that 75% target has not be met in at least 5 years)

    32% - Following

Overall for the year it was 52% … but "the spokesperson" does tell us what 2024 has been like rather that figure will be release with the annual report. A figure to hand which is not part of any audit process. Will it remain at 52% or drop below 52%?

Seriously thought he might of got over what he thinks to be a strong argument, he hasn't got a clue

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-41561782.html

As I say there is a certain ligitamacy to a public service broadcaster airing older films. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is from 1968 and is based on a story by Ian Fleming and was written by Roald Dahl, long with it being toward the end of the Musical era if not by a good decade.

O'Donovan might have an issue with Roald Dahl (I believe he might have good cause) but again there is some ligitamcy in a PSB airing Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory due to it starring Gene Wilder, who is one of the greatest comic actors of his era.

But then Willy Wonka as I pointed out had 131k viewers on Christmas Day so it not like people are turning away from such films.

In actual fact I would argue that RTÉ, VMTV and TG4 don't air enough films pre-1980, at what point do repeats of Home Alone and Die Hard become out of touch. (In fairness to TG4 they have the Western but many are on repeat).

The rest of his statement is a load of babble tbh and nothing new

RTÉ seeks €225,000 sponsorship for Doireann Garrihy’s new 2FM afternoon show - is Doireann still part of NK agency?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,255 ✭✭✭RoTelly

She is, Beforbe's only stated he wouldn't be in conversation with NK, basically building a wall around him.

I assume it works like this

Head of 2fm works with his team to deliver a new host / DJ, they negotiate a price, it then goes to the Director of Audio whom starts the negotiations proper along with head of 2FM, this is then send to the Leadership team and from their to the board and back down the line to give Doireann a nice pay cheque, this prevents the DG signing of on payments unilaterally. But ultimately he is the person that will take any blame. Beforbes doesn't really seem to understand this.

I 'get' what he's saying, a lot of these older movies are also cheaper to air, compared to paying to screen a more successful recent film.

But most of the rest of what he said sounds like a way to justify the almost Billion euros RTE got to bail its self out.

He at least acknowledges that the young audience are abandoning TV, and it's doubtful they'll return.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,341 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Very dissapointed ‘The Robe’ wasn’t on over the holiday period.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,255 ✭✭✭RoTelly

He does but content is content, he doesn't mention that since 2011 RTÉ choose to invest €3m into 2fm every year, while cutting funding to young peoples content, RTÉ decision to avoid comedy and to cut their funding of Drama, areas that might attract younger people to their content rather than the platform on which they sit.

The €1k (possibly even less for older movies) cost of airing older movies pales in comparison to the €25k paid to each of RTÉ's leadership/executive board team in allowances each year.

When do Home and Alone and Die Hard stop cutting it in his view?

Also I would much rather Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Willy Wonka over the weekly Hallmark Movies RTÉ have chosen to show every Saturday and Sunday on RTÉ2.

Oh I get that. Under Dee's tenure, you could see the shows and movies dropping in quality. There was more 'local' or 'nostalgia' programs, while execs and presenters got insane pay rises. The programming got cheaper, and even the news programming went to absolute crap. And RTE used to have a pretty solid news team. But when you saw Rte journos crying over the horrific resources and pay circumstances during the Tubridy pay scandal, and even now seeing his smug, sinister in retrospect, grin, and saying 'he's forgiven RTE'… I'm reminded of the hard working journalists who quite often put their lives in danger, who were often told 'we don't have the money', and I still find the managing of RTE to be sickening.

(I hate the term 'content' though. It used to be that you'd hear people talk about their 'work', their 'art', or their 'craft'… content implies everything is as disposable as toilet paper. Art is timeless, content is not. Apologies for the tangent.)

And yet they think people will welcome Doirreann Garrihy back with open arms. Didn't they have to bring in two other presenters because her solo ratings were awful? And that was before the scandal, and her 'sponsorships' and 'the party on the Garrihy boat'.

That ain't water under the bridge.

If past performance based on O'Donovans stint in the office of public works (OPW) is a guide to future results, I would not hold out much hope.

Net Zero means we are paying for the destruction of our economy and society in pursuit of an unachievable and pointless policy.

Why hasn't there been some journalistic expose/ Rte prime time esque exposure of this scandal on ( Any Neflix execs on here) , focusing in on Dee Forbes

Her lawyering up and not co-operating is an expression of guilt in himself in my book

Why doesn't some young budding journalist in the Leitrim express go after this story..

Why did Dee Forbes get the role when she wasn't in the running at one stage. Close to the announcement of new Rte boss, head of what is now Virgin Media was the favourite , Bakurst was 2nd favourite

    https://www.thejournal.ie/rte-director-general-row-6045549-Apr2023/

Why did the board pick Dee over more qualified candidates ?

Was Dee corrupt or did the board corrupt Dee? Did the toxic Rte culture corrupt her?

WhY isn't the frauding squad investigating Dee for fraudulent misssapopriation of public funds.

Why can John or Jane doe be summoned to court for not paying Rte 160 euro and she can fraudulently gift people 2.6 million euros and get a free pass

    https://m.independent.ie/irish-news/rte-paid-out-26m-in-golden-handshakes-to-executives-during-dee-forbess-reign/a186595968.html

How much money is Rte paying her now?

    So many questions..

Surely this story can't go unanswered forever?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,770 ✭✭✭sxt

Or the alternative view and possibly more realiistic view, given that there is zero scrutiny over Dee Forbes ...at any level...

That the Rte hierarchy and the Government are the real villians and Dee Forbes is the sacrificial lamb and scapegoat

Public will blame Dee, No action, No accountability needed

That's why there is no interest in pursuing this national scandal

There are so many skeletons in so many closets ...

Would the common man be able to make a complaint and have RTE investigated for fraud?

If there was an indication of criminality then such an investigation would have begun soon after the scandal was revealed.

With say 35,000 new homes a year X e160. That's an extra 5.6 million a year those parasites are getting...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,530 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

That should be the way it works, but it's not in this case. The in-the-governments-pocket Garda Commissioner Druseless Harris came out and said they won't be investigating anything unless there's a complaint. Even though from my own time as a Garda, there were times I had to investigate in the public interest even without a complaint. I did email AGS and ask, no reply of course. He needs to be the next to go and hopefully replaced with someone who actually cares about the force.

Dee is as much apart of this as anyone else involved, unless that was the plan to be that sacrificial lamb and scapegoat to further calls for more money for RTÉ? I can't imagine that to be the case. On your other post why did she get the job…

Because … dare I say it … but it helped she'd had a career in London with Discovery … but also because you know … not that you can say that … but then I thought Geraldine O'Leary was going to apply … so I am probably wrong … I am sure it was purely down to her work with Ted Turner …

@RabbleRouser2k I don't like the word content either (one RTÉ person called it product, which is far worse) but I think content covers a wide variety of programming.

All in all Dee is recovering somebody tells me, they also suggest it wouldn't make a difference if she went to the Oireachtas to tell her side of the story.

Recovering from what ? Guilt? Sorrow? Self-Pity? either way she was not well, and that Journey to the Oireachtas should be on it way.

    She sacraficed something

I was at the above interview, I walked out of the hall and walked out and I said to another man who was clearly unhappy with what he had hear "What did you think of that?" he just look at me and said "bullshit"… I wish I'd spoken to him more.

Can you show examples of white collar crime that has been investigated, and how such an investigation started? I don't really know enough about white collar crime but I do know its hard to start an investigation and then to actual make an arrest. Look at all the tribunals we've had over the years.

The redundancy package to a former CFO must be consider at least up for investigation?

She's only getting this if they find a sponsor willing to pay that fee. If a sponsor is like 'hell no, she's tainted goods' then they may have to negotiate a lesser fee for sponsorship.

When she had her show, years ago, without co-hosts, her listenership was poor, and shrinking. Co-hosts had to be brought in to try and increase the listenership.

Her podcast seems to have tanked, as well. The Tubridy effect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,074 ✭✭✭skimpydoo

She stupidly thought her podcast would be her main earner. I have been podcasting 9 years and it's not my main earner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,634 ✭✭✭RabbleRouser2k

Starting a podcast is like starting a youtube channel. The age of 'successful' podcasts is long past.

And since sponsors were avoiding her like the plague after the Flahavan's disaster, I'd say she was dying on her butt.

When I started my podcast very few people were doing them, and I have now done over 1500 podcasts. Now everybody and their arse is doing them. If I was thinking of doing a podcast today I would probably not do it as I could not guarantee it would be successful.

I am lucky enough to get at least 2 emails a week offering guests to appear on my podcast. To me success is not scrambling around looking for your next guest and I vividly remember having to do that in the infancy of my podcast. Success to me is getting guests to appear on a regular basis. I recorded 2 podcasts last week and I will have recorded 2 more this week.
