I record all my weights through the HerdApp but i rent a scales through the ICBF which logs that i used it. Its always syncs up together then without issue for me. Not sure how that would work if you have your own scales.

    Is that the ICBF herdapp?

Is there a subscription to pay for that or how do you access? What other features does that one have?

you need to register the scales, i cant remember if its on agfood or herdplus its a while since we did it

But if you don't own the scales you could be using different ones each time.

Our AI man does it. On the Herdwatch app it doesn't ask anything about who did it or the scales. So was wondering if Herdwatch isn't connected for the SCEP scheme and it's just a personal weight logging thing they have on the app.

Register your scales beforehand then weigh away should be no problem once there synced. Once the cow and calf is weighed on the same day it should be fine.
I would recommend paying the 60 euro for the HerdPlus I find it very informative for weighing reports

I see in scep you can change your reference number for scep this would really benefit me in 2026 but I think I will try to increase my reference number anyway. What percentage of your reference number would I need to calf in 2025 if I upped my reference to 30cows would 15cows 50% calved down 2025 be enough?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,028 ✭✭✭Lime Tree Farm

I think you can only bring down figures, and stay down. I don't think you can up figures.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,079 ✭✭✭limo_100

I was thinking that may be the case alright but the message from the department didn't say either way so I will chance it anyway. Do you know the percentage you have to calf yearly? Thought maybe there was extra funding due to the amount that pulled out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,418 ✭✭✭tanko

I’m pretty sure that if you reduced your yearly reference number for last year or the previous year that you can increase this the yearly reference number for this year back up to he programme reference number that you set at the start of the scheme.
If you reduced the programme reference number at the start of the scheme then you can’t increase the programme reference number now i think, maybe that’s what you’re thinking of.

15 cows would be grand but if you only calved 14 you’ll be thrown out of the scheme and have to pay all the money back. You could ring ICBF to clarify for sure.

I see the Simental and Charolaois Societies have pulled out of the ICBF star system. Numbers are dropping too for the SCEP with farmers pulling out of it.

It will be interesting to see how the ICBF comment on it and if they alter their view that a small 500-600kg beef-dairyX cow is what everyone should have.

  • Registered Users Posts: 273 ✭✭WoozieWu

    how can they pull out

the statement just says they wont be showing the figures on catalogues anymore

the cattle will still have icbf figures

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,704 ✭✭✭Anto_Meath

The way prices are going it is really opening up the difference between the animal with a 300kgs dw carcass and a 400kgs dw carcass.. so I think the days of a small dairy cross cow is numbered.

Saler Society not showing the indexes on their official sales either I read yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,760 ✭✭✭893bet

friend in scep is having a clearance sale, just gone too old for calving. Assume he will rent it out.

Will he be asked to pay back the money from year 1 and 2?

If he is I assume the approach he should take is a force majeure and get the doctor involved?

I see the parthenaise society are after pulling the plug too. Any word on the limousin society from anyone involved in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,418 ✭✭✭tanko

The Limousin society wouldn’t agree on what day of the week it is let alone something like that, they’re liable to do anything. The whole Eurostar system is completely rigged in favour of AA cattle so i’d say they’re delighted with it.

You'd want to be careful what gets culled or sold this year too. I think 65% have to be 4 or 5 star. Will look it up and find out.

Also increasing to 75% by 31 Oct 2027.

is there much of a penalty for non compliance on the replacement heifer front

Yes. You'd nearly want a degree in statistics to fully qualify for everything in this scheme over the 5 years.

I saw that. I don’t understand why they are doing it. Salers come out really well with Eurostars. Surely of all breeds it’s worth their while showing their stars?

    I got a text from The Limousin Society this morning. As follows;

    Irish Limousin Cattle Society Statement
Due to the fact that we are now living with the consequences of the decisions taken in relation to the evaluations by the ICBF Board, the Technical Advisory Group (TAG), informed by the Teagasc Beef Economic model that was signed off without consulting or considering the implications for our breeders, we as a Society will be requesting ICBF to remove the genetic evaluation of all registered animals in our Herdbook. We have decided upon this stance in the best interests of our breeders whose livelihoods are at stake

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,704 ✭✭✭Anto_Meath

Is SCEP now a dead duck in that due to the number of Societies that have pulled out participants can't have confidence in the animals they are now buying for breeding.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,079 ✭✭✭limo_100

have then gone above beyond the other societies with there withdrawal from the herdbook. Surely icbf have to be under pressure now. I did think that it would take the limousin society to withdraw to made changes as they are the mostly widely used breed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,390 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

I don't know what's going on. Do societies have an issue with the overall indices or is it with how the data is collected. When they are all pulling away from ICBF, it can't be good. They don't give valid reasons for leaving.

There's too much of a clique element between certain breeders and the AI companies and ICBF seems to be independent from all this cronyism.

The Limousin society seem to be asking that all info on their animals is wiped. The other societies say that they’re not going to display Eurostar data at their sales but if the seller is signed up to herdplus then the data can be seen with the tag number i assume. It’s some mess now.

ICBF were told to come up with a system to destroy the suckler herd in this country and that’s what they’ve done. The SCEP scheme is just the governments way of giving as little support to suckler farmers as they can, not much mention of the €350/cow they promised since the election of course.

We only kept the 4 & 5 star heifers for breeding based on scep evaluation last Spring. Some of these were downgraded last November.

in fairness icbf where going ok nobody was fully happy but everyone was getting on with it. But icbf brought this on them selfs in 2023 when they just decided to completely changed the goal posts and they f*cked people over.
