Everyone on about Mm not being on tv. How exactly would him being on tv have helped?

ESB has teams arriving from abroad this week. Perhaps MM couod have shimmied up a pole for the optics.

My local SF TD claimed to be hiring her own cartographers to try sort out an issue with planning for DART+, so presumably they'd all be willing to chip in with some amateur wiring too.

Zero change here. No power, mobile reception is still gone. No 3G/4G whatsoever. We do have water though and we have a gas stove. The downed ESB poles haven't moved since Friday so not sure when we will get connected.

No sign of council either with many trees half blocking the roads. Only for the locals, there would be no access.

Coping alright though, got into a bit of a routine. I have excellent rechargeable lamps which are great in the evenings. Finished Joe Canning's book last night 🙂

If we were to measure this storm in trees down, it would be very hard to beat ever.

I saw a photo of a wind turbine in a nearby wind farm that had all 3 blades snapped. I will try and post it.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

They are in power a long time, how about some pre-planning, hubs, looking at overhead lines, trimming trees, you know basic things, rather than just leaving all to chance as per usual.

Dublin not affected, rest pf country doesn’t matter….

Pat Kenny was saying this morning that there is a massive delay or blockage in getting tree felling licenses. The government have known about it for years it seems. Coillte blocking it too for some odd reason.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Ya do know there's thousands of people in towns and villages with no power too. And the cables supplying them run across the open countryside?

Yes, but it is the sheer size of the network that creates the problem. Here is another example:

"To avoid voltage drop due to transmission loss over this extended network, at least one transformer for every square kilometre is needed in almost 75% of the area supplied by the ESB. This means that Ireland has almost one-third the number of transformers as in the UK despite having a total distribution network of just half the size and 6% of its population. The inefficiency and length of the network has significant financial costs."

I presume everywhere are sold out of portable gas stoves like below, parents still without power and not due back for another few days yet.

I dont think having MM on TV is what people are asking for. They are looking for some evidence of a coordinated response. ESB have done their thing, Irish Water have done their thing, the phone companies are doing their own thing, but there is no evidence of any coordination whatsoever, on a local or national level.

What we get is "we know you have no power, no water, no phone or no internet so check online or ring 1800… for informaiton". And the community hubs! In Galway at least it appears to be places who have made themselves available rather than anything organised.

Just caught the tail end of a clip on Newstalk, lady was promoting her local hotel I think it was. Offering shower and charging facilities. "You need to book in advance though" lol. With my imaginary powered phone on my imaginary phone signal is it..???

I’ve been well prepped for years due to power outages and elderly parents with complex medical and mobility needs. Got my power back Friday night (thank you ESB) but surrounding areas still out so my gas stoves, camping bbq, battery lights and usb lights we’ve lent out to people that need them.

Showers, dinners, flask refills and charging all happening at our house since Saturday.

With the same method you use to post on boards, of course.

It may be hard to believe but it is possible to not have issues yourself but still have empathy with the situation others face.

There's a good bit of cherry picking going on there; the report you linked also says

The bulk of the existing network was constructed in the era of Rural Electrification from the late 1940s to the 1960s. At that time the priority was the connection of the maximum number of customers as quickly and economically as possible. Load on the system is now approximately 200 times higher than it was at the start of Rural Electrification and the system was not designed to take this level. In addition to the basic design of the system, the age profile and condition have emerged as important issues. Where poles and much of the conductor are over forty years old problems of reliability occur with increasing frequency.

    And

the low proportion of underground cable, approximately 8%, has a significant impact on continuity of supply

But obviously those points don't support your assertion that

This can only be fixed by changing the settlement patterns and significantly curtailing one-off housing.

Update from Mayo/Roscommon border. Still without power, Powercheck estimates "unknown" restore time. Trees hung on wires, few poles down. Was able to charge few UPS's at work to connect a laptop and my secondary internet connection (fixed wireless). Primary internet connection still down. With fireplace on full blast 16 degrees in the living room. No heating elsewhere, so bedroom now has cosy 8 degrees only.

maybe not a new reality, but it seems ppl need to make themselves more informed about such events, and how to prepare. its not armageddon but having such items like the gas hob etc will help, 100%, like a small generator.

id be aware you need to use stuff, not leave it idle, and i would hope to think ppl would have common sense to realise this. but like i said, if this was a lot worse, where would we be.its a shot across the bow as such in terms of bad storms. with the damage done, power outages / no running water, and loss of phone signals, it does make you wonder. Such a small island really and we took a few sucker punches no doubt about it.

hearing chatter through work and in work, it seems some ppl are now fearful of bad weather, and those who were not too hugely affected ?

hopefully ppl who are in need get sorted asap.

And the insurance companies dont gouge their customers - but this is inevitable, its ireland, all about fast money , and **k who you turn over, just like the banks, greedy heurs. They'll tell you to look at the small print for compassion.

Thanks for that, you would imagine, they would have targeted the west seeing as that is most impacted, I think most of Dublin is generally OK and has power. (relatively speaking compared to West anyway)

Unless the hall is drafty, I would let the doors inside the house open and let the heat dissipate throughout the house over the course of the day with the fire lit.

Net Zero means we are paying for the destruction of our economy and society in pursuit of an unachievable and pointless policy.

We had a boil water notice for our area, but it's no longer coming up on water.ie when I enter our Eircode to check the water quality. Can I safely assume it's been lifted then? Neighbours say they heard it still applies, but I would hope Uisce Éireann has the most up-to-date information?

I see thr government shills have migrated from the politics forum into the weather forum.

The state of the comments on here.

Oh its the governments fault again! Everything is the governments fault. Some of ye want them to wipe your own arses for ye. Dopes.

The very same posters who would be complaining about an over-reaction to the weather warnings are out in force giving out about the lack of a response

People should be contacting their local councillors and TDs looking for support on the ground.

Elected to look after their constituents, would be nice if they turned up for work occasionally.
