Same with the fire, very lucky to have it as we are still without power. Thankfully the phone connection improved a couple of hours ago.

The fridge contents are outside the back door in two padded cool bags as it’s colder out there. Fingers crossed for power soon.

Had estimated restoring time of 21.00 tomorrow evening too but just back a few mins ago . 15 mins the louisburgh side of westport . Hope same happens for more here waiting patiently for power. Nearly 36 hours without it was tough going

TG4 nuacht Friday showed a collapsed folded wind turbine. Anyone know where that was?

If you cut it up and split it, and stack it somewhere like my ventilated woodshed, you are looking at 4 months minimum to dry it to a point it will burn at all, likely with some hissing, to actually get some heat off it, another couple of months. The gold standard for drying timber is reckoned to be 2 years.

Nothing fallen in the storm is usable as firewood now.

Collapsed turbine was out near An Spideal.

We chopped up a tree after storm Isha last January and the logs still aren’t dry enough. Tested one the other night. Next winter they should be good to use.

We’ve more this year to saw up so will have to label the new blocks as storm Èowyn so we don’t mix ‘em up. 😁

Net Zero means we are paying for the destruction of our economy and society in pursuit of an unachievable and pointless policy.

Still no electricity here 15min from Limerick city. Mobile mast was gone since yesterday and has just come back online.

Having gone through Darwin and Ophelia with no electricity for 2-3 days both times (no fun at all when there are small kids in the house) , once we had spare money 4 years ago we got a generator and connected it to the house. 1.5k but well worth its money. Everything in the house is running as normal and only the noise of the generator outside reminds that the power is out.

I doubt we ll get our electricity back before Tuesday the earliest.

central mayo. Rural castlebar . Finally got home last night . The carnage of trees down is unreal . I’d only be slightly hopeful for power tomorrow . Talking to esb crew working on HV lines they said it could be as bad a 9-10 days before everything is resolved .

Seriously thinking of a generator after last January and again now. Was it very expensive?

1.5k mentioned there so I assume that's referring to the cost

Power back in Tubbercurry but the rest of south Sligo is still in darkness. No water now, and poor mobile signal but Internet working. Things slowly getting back to normal. So much damage done it will take a few days to assess it all. Really hard on people with babies and toddlers and the vulnerable elderly people.

Looking at the invoice from Oct 2021, we got Hyundai open frame generator 8.0kW. It was 1370eur. Plus a few hundred to our friend electrician to connect it so that we can switch house between ESB and generator. I am sure something smaller to which you could connect an extension lead would be much cheaper but we thought it was worth paying more and not having to deal with extension leads. The only two things in the house that still wont work are Nespresso coffee machine and electric shower neither of which are critical anyway.

We had power outage during snow as well and do use it 2-3 times a year on average.

Powercheck today was giving me an estimated time of 9pm Monday. Came home today at 4pm and we had power back. Absolutely delighted.

The estimated times appear to be not accurate or maybe it's a case the crews don't want to over promise. Hopefully your power will be back very soon.

The repair crews are doing an excellent job

Why doesn't the Nespresso work? Does it not like the voltage?

By the way what have you to indicate that the ESB is back when generator running.

I don't have a Genny but I presume you can fit an auto changeover switch, have a mains indicator light/alarm or just look to see if the street or neighbours are back

Unfortunately back to old fashioned care . Sorry about your sutuation that is very rough . Bad enough managing when its just adults but with children, babies and elderly , its horrible.

If you have an air mattress, softly inflate it and place some very soft sheepskin rugs / wool blankets covered with sheet of choice , and change that mattress out for that ,then just tilt over and back every few hours ? Tough going but better than risking pressure sores.

Also contact local emergency public health / doctor to let them know as they might be able to get some aids together for you .

Indicator light inside the ESB box connected to change over switch so yes, it involves going outside and checking now and again. Must get a small battery camera to put inside for days like this:))

you won't have to travel too far to find fuel lying on the ground 😂

How true is this though? The majority of people I know with solar and no electric supply haven't got a useable electric supply available to them when the power is out. Either some component is missing, some aspect of it has failed to work, the system wasnt speced to do this or the system simply isn't able to handle anything but a few basic uses for a few hours at best due to lack of light

The things that people need during a power outage are the ability to boil water, run a hob or oven(if no gas available) or power a radio perhaps.

I don't believe many people would spend the money necessary to ensure they have a useable supply in a power outage.

I personally think that whole aspect to solar is completely overrated.

If you have a smartmeter you should be able to see if it has power to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 637 ✭✭✭glen123

no idea. It starts, spits out a bit of coffee and dies out.Google suggests it may be not getting the full wave of AC required to run the pump but I am not curious enough to dig any further.

All other appliances work fine. Old Hotpoint fridge didnt like the generator either (kept turning on and off) but new Bosch American one works fine.

Has this question being asked before? After all these years of ESBN cutting back and trimming nearby growth, how come there are still so many trees close to power lines, pulling down electricity lines throughout the country. Surely there should be some by-law that states you should not have any trees near power lines - or that ESBN are obliged to make sure there are none adjacent. It would improve outages following storms like Eowyn.

Just for reference..how much did you spend on your system, ball park? On a day like today, overcast, short daylight etc, how many kettles could you boil, hobs use, ovens run for how long? How long could you remain 'off grid'?

I'm thinking of doing the same myself and starlink for Internet. It's becoming far to frequent

South Mayo, no electricity since peak of storm with no estimated return time. No water since 4pm today. No mobile coverage but using an Eir sim card in a dongle yoke powered by a power bank to give limited internet.

The positives, no structural damage to house or outbuildings and all livestock safe. Gas cooker so can cook fine and Stanley range keeping us warm enough.

Negatives: Multiple mature trees sadly knocked on the farm, but these will provide an abundance of firewood over the next few years.

Lessons learned: purchase an old school battery FM radio. And maybe a Super Ser.
