Pity Mace Head went down at 5am, other stations had their highest gust at 6/7am.

That 206kph from the Arrans is crazy.

Out of curiosity, what happens to the downed trees.

Obviously getting them off the road or whatever is the priority.

However are they just destined for landfill or will they be used for woodwork or firewood.

As exceptional as the Mace Head values are, and in no way am I trying to downplay them, the station was only set up in 2003. We've not exactly had many very powerful storms to compete this century so far compared to 1950s to 1990s and it is extremely exposed. Makes me wonder what it would have received in storms before 2003.

Similar to Needles Old Battery on the Isle of Wight with Storm Eunice from February 2022. Another relatively modern station that is extremely exposed and set a national record for England but what would it have recorded in the big ones of the 20th century if it had been in service then?

    We'll never know.

Thankfully I was unscathed. Sheet of corrugated flew up from the field to the back lawn but no damage . I need to get my weather station up and running. Roof tiles were lost on a friend's house in lixnaw.

Lots of trees down on the Listowel road.

The 150kmh was at the spa

I’m in the same boat. No contact since 2am.
can’t see any reports of how hard Athenry got hit but seeing some of the images from Galway county it’s nerve wracking

Hats off to the Emergency Coordination 'family'. They run a professional show based on the information they have. Light years away from the haphazard efforts as recent as a decade or so ago. Thankfully no fatalities reported and the red weather warning was 100% the right call. That plus the nighttime occurrence of the storm are almost certain to have saved lives. Again the folks who now have to go out and restore power, clean up the damage have my full admiration.

Oddly gusty shower in Kinsale which has taken the electricity out just now. After a calm sunny day.

My deck in Cork city thinks it's April, I can walk full stride on it for the first time in months. Great drying weather last night :D

We fared well in terms of avoiding the worst. Darwin was our worst ever in these parts (Limerick City) with gusts up to 160kph. But ÉOWYN as a whole was the worst storm to hit Ireland in many many years. It'll be talked about for decades. Over 200kph on the Aran Islands is phenomenal. Nature at its best (or worst)

I did a bit of noodling on this picture when i saw it, using Highlight/Shadows and Clarity filters etc to bring out the detail, plus straightened it ..

Like a scene from a Star Wars movie, can see Walkers behind it :D

    Well done !

Would not mind that brioche at all , yum.

Same here , battened down the hatches , moved some potential missiles out of harms way , and worst damage is a few leaves and small branches around . But I think because we face east / west we escaped the worst of the wind where I am .

I fell asleep around 4.30 am . It was very gusty before that but not directly. Did it peak earlier than predicted ?

Slept right through until other half woke me at 11 to say all good !

Would be interested to know what max gusts here were too.NCD ?

Still there is a tree down across the road so not all got through so easy .

It appears to have really hit those on the west so much worse .

Thinking of @greenpilot here , that's some damage sorry to hear .

I don't want to flog a dead horse but the overplayed/underplayed people.

The one soundbite I heard from the Simon Harris was on the radio warning people this could possibly be one of the biggest storms we ever have had.

If people can't take from that what they need that's their problem.

What do people need? A politician calling to their door four times an hour to give the most up to date news for your specific townland?

For those without power it's to be frosty in some spots tonight so keep warm , I honestly don't know how we still have power it's a miracle, stay safe guys , this storm was very historic to say the least

Yip - Its what I would have done to the original if I had taken it :D .. Pic not mine, attributed to a person called Roisin on Alan Carlowweather post about this. However I love the whole RAW capability with cameras and phones ( ususally in pro mode settings on phones ). Allows you to take photos and include all possible "parameters" so you can ( as us muso's say ) Fix it in the mix after inside Photo Software like Affinity Photo ( Hate photoshop, over priced, over rated ) :D

Lots of salt deposited on surfaces in Kilkenny city too.

7.5 million trees downed during Storm Darwin, I wonder will there be anything like that this time round. Possibly not due to the counties heaviest hit this time vs Darwin?

Well done on all your good work on the storm Meteorite 👏. Hope you have your power back soon. I was lucky to keep power and have plenty of timber to be diced up for next year. The sound of chainsaws fills the air!

Likely either the K1 or K2 buoy, both offshore to our south west. Neither of them seem to be reporting data at the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,316 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Seems to be a UK Met Office data buoy, possibly from somewhere out west of Cork - broke it's moorings during one storm, and lost contact during Darragh

@DayInTheBog The carlowweather tweet says its a UK met office weather buoy - ODAS 62 seems to be printed on it

Another contributor added this tweet which might shed more light on this:

Kinda looking forward to dinner by the wireless and wine by the fire tonight.

We've no power since 2am (Limerick) but once I silenced the alarm fault and changed the dead back-up battery in the wired smoke alarm, I was happy to be without power until we are sorted. Just myselgf and the wife - and we are no strangers to tents or a campervan - so we'll survive with gas and batteries. Just happy that the house survived. Lost a few trees and have to repair the bracket on the flue for the heating. No big deal.

    Until next time!

There are a few - just a few - people with the kit to process trees into usable timber for woodworking. However, you'd need to bear in mind that some of the trees that fell, fell precisely because they're diseased and could have suffered damage in the fall which makes them unusable for work.

I know a chap near newgrange with a bandsaw mill who does this.

The scale of outages reported on the ESB power check website is most likely worse than reported. The outage affecting my neighbourhood wasn't even recorded on it.
