Those wheels look very nice in those photos. Well wear. Love the style on the front bumper.

Only thing I'm not mad on is the GTI badge on the side, the wheel arch badges on previous models were nicer, but also looks a bit out of place?

Yeah I'm not 100% on them either but they're easily removed if you find them very objectionable. Could always pick up a set of the old style "dagger" badges then if you wished. I think I'll leave it as is for now though.

Fair play Joe and well wear. Moonstone is a great choice on them and I'm pleasantly surprised by the wheels. In the press photos I thought they weren't quite right but your photos show the curve on the spokes and they look great.

When I saw them during the week with the car filthy and up on transport blocks I was a little underwhelmed, also thought they looked smaller than I expected. But way better today after it was PDI'd, centre caps and bolt covers fitted, etc. I think the estorils I had on the last car (and still available as an option) look a bit bigger visually but glad I picked these anyway, they're a GTI wheel whereas the Estoril will be common on the R.

Any fellow R/GTI owners had their water pump replaced? Looks like mine has died, coolant leak, not heat from blowers, no coolant temp reading and oil temp only ever reading 50ish deg, acc unavailable.

Had a look at some YouTube tutorials and seems a very complex job.

Based in South East with no local VW Dealer. Struggling to find an Indy wants to tackle it.

    Any advice/suggestions?

    @lirpaloof

I am South Dublin based, might not be much of a help. Got mine replaced late last year by Green Auto in Kilternan.
Dropped in the morning collected next day. Asked for genuine parts and , and they did source it.

Used them a few times for other cars also and always found then reliable with a great service

Daltons in Portlaoise did it for me on my R. Very common on this platform.

Traded my MK7 R after 5 years for a MK8 CS Edition 45 today. It's a cracking car with a top spec. Very happy with it.

My MK8 GTI is driving me nuts at the moment, I'm getting constant warnings for Emergency assist unavailable immediately followed by travel assist unavailable. These warning are accompanied by a beep and can occur multiple times per minute!! Has anyone any experience dealing with this issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

It's a pretty commonly reported issue unfortunately. Is it under warranty? Have you the latest available software installed? (make sure you're setup as a primary user and the car has a live connection to the internet). If software updates don't fix it, the common remedy seems to be replacing the steering wheel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 213 ✭✭TheBetsy

Just out of warranty unfortunately. I believe software is fully up to date also and I'm the primary user. Although sometime when I start up it tells me there is no primary user set up yet for some reason. Any recommendations who to take it to in the south other than Blackwater Motors?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Hmmm, I had a MK8 for 3.5 years and it rarely booted me out of being "primary user" so that doesn't sound right either. Also make sure that your privacy settings is always set to "Share my position" as this is the only one that allows a connection to the VW servers.

If it's out of warranty you may have a bit of a battle on your hands to get it covered, especially if new hardware is their proposed fix, and like I said, a new steering wheel is very often their solution. There are sensors in the wheel relating to that Travel-assist feature.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with any dealers in the south, unless you go the Indie route, such as Goldens in Cork. But I think this job may be a main dealer only job.

What was the cost may I ask? I got a quote from the stealer and it was the price of a nice holiday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 213 ✭✭TheBetsy

Quite annoying that it's to do with the assist systems. I generally don't tend to like/use them and would prefer them disabled. Do you know if there there is any way to disable these steering wheel sensors? I have an OBD2 dongle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

You can't. If it was that simple, everyone would just disable them and that would be the end of it. So whether you switch them off or disable them by whatever means, those warnings/bongs will persist.

The software in the MK8 is 💩 So many issues with it. VW destroyed the Golf legacy with the inferior MK8.

Is it an early production MK8? My brother and I had the same issues with ours. Steering wheel is the issue funnily enough, will need to be swapped.

I've a 2022 GTD and I started getting the emergency assist unavailable and travel assist warnings too. It's pretty intermittent but on one journey it happened about 20 times and drove me mad as well. Seems to have calmed down the past few days.

Reading on UK forums and plenty of people had new steering wheels only for the problem to return after a few months. I saw one owner was on his 3rd steering wheel! Apparently the fix is the latest OTA install followed by a new steering wheel.

Not sure on the action to take myself. This is the only issue I've had with the GTD since buying it a few months ago.

I got the steering wheel replaced on my 2021 GTD last year!

The issue was initially very intermittent however got progressively worse and more frequent. Despite asking two garages to look at it it was only decided that it was the steering wheel that was the issue - as the car was just out of warranty they did a deal for me for roughly €515 - TBH well worth for the peace and quite!

Anyhow I have been driving GTDs since 2015 and have a GTI ordered which I am hoping to get in March so looking forward to that :)

Asking here as some of ye might have feedback. Has anyone changed from 19" to 18" or 225 to 235 or vice versa and noticed any difference in handling/steering?

I'm wheel shopping for the Born, tyre availability is basically nonexistent at 20" so I have to go 19". My only concern would be making the car feel softer and undoing the improvements of the H&R springs I put it as it currently has nice feedback on the road. Then again as it's such a heavy car, going to a slightly larger sidewall probably isn't that noticeable.

Nice. What kind of spec have you ordered? GTI or Clubsport?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 52 ✭✭captainchaos

Ordered a Black GTI with queenstown wheels and black pack!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Very nice, something to look forward to! The Queenstown wheels look great.

I'm looking to get the DSG oil changed at a local VW garage. They charge 325 euro which isn't too bad. I don't see any mention of the filter being changed too. Does anyone know if they change this as part of the DSG service?
