I get the impression the superb would be more luxurious and smoother, but have never driven one. Probably like driving a 3 series with similar power to the base r.

Let us know how you go if you test drive one.

Disgraceful from a once premium brand. The new A3 is the same, cheap as chips interior. It is cost saving because of diesel gate. The brand is now on the level of Dacia, BYD as in cheap yellow pack, budget brands. Shame.

I'm using these wheels on my golf r. While driving in the uk a new pothole formed as I drove and it was about 10cm deep. I scratched the wall of the wheel but no issues with buckling. The impact was hard enough to hurt my wrists on the steering wheel. These wheels are extremely strong. I bought a replacement wheel as I expected it would be destroyed but when I got it checked it was perfect bar the scratch from the edge of the pothole.

I’m guessing you did very well trading in your current car. Probably lost very small money on it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,549 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Yeah I think I did OK on the trade in. On reflection, seeing what similar ones are retailing for now, I perhaps should have pushed for a little bit more or even considered selling it privately. But private selling a car is just a load of hassle I can do without tbh. There was 2 or 3 lads alright I know who were very interested in it but timing/circumstances didn't line up.

Problem is, the new car is more than 10k more expensive than it was in 2021 so what you gain on the trade in, you lose on the other end!

I wasn't even feeling the itch to change it or anything, the current car has been 100%, never given a moments bother and it is still absolutely mint with very low mileage. It was only when I started seeing all the pictures and positive reviews of the new 8.5, that the hamster started spinning. I really like what they've done on the facelift, they've addressed the major pain point very well (the new upgraded infotainment) and the tweaks to the exterior looks work very well imo. I've added a couple of toys to this one that I didn't have before - pano roof and HK audio.

Hope to collect it before end of week.

My current one would be a really nice buy for anyone in the market for one. Surely the cleanest example in the country.

I haven't been following anything with the GTI after the Mk8. Think the standard model is pushing 275hp now? Where does that leave the Clubsport and the R?

New standard GTI is 265bhp (up from 245bhp).

    Clubsport is 300bhp, unchanged.

    R is 333bhp, up from 310 (I think).

Well done Joe, looking forward to seeing it! Picking up a new 330e Touring M Sport Pro myself in the next few weeks 😄 my wife is taking my 128ti.

Still the one to aspire to! Sounds a lovely car Joe. Looking forward to a few pics and a review. I'm a tiny bit envious, lol!

Does it have the new style alloys whose name escapes me? Really like them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,549 ✭✭✭JoeA3

The “Queenstown”? Yes it does. It’s the first decent looking GTI-only wheel in years. The estorils on my current car, while very nice, are R wheels. Even have an R logo on them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,392 ✭✭✭mcburns07

Great choice, specced one up myself a while ago to see what sort of money they'd be these days 😁 Queenstown are the nicest of the lot but not a bad selection tbf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,851 ✭✭✭ILikeBoats

That's the one. Yes, they're lovely

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,479 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

Wasn't sure what to make of the Queenstown wheel when I saw pictures at first but they're growing on me, I'd say they'd look well in person. About time they did something different too. The Brescia wheels aren't massively different to the 18" wheels on the standard Mk7.5 and Mk8. Wouldn't surprise me if it was the same lad who designed them!

They look similar to the Alfa Romeo Guilia wheels? Not bad at all and easy enough to clean. 😁👌 Congrats Joe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,549 ✭✭✭JoeA3

I believe they are intended to be a throwback to the MK5 Monza/Detroit and there sure are similarities but yes my first impression when I saw pictures of them first was Alfa teledials…

I'm just curious has anyone on here gone stage 1/2/3 with any of their cars yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,549 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Well here she is. I’m so delighted with it! 🥰

I’ve not driven it far yet and it’s tucked up now for the night out of harms way from the storm. But first impressions are excellent. Really pleased with the colour and the spec. Sunroof is a lovely extra touch. Dealers presented the car really well, it was gleaming. Obviously it feels similar but there’s lots of subtle little tweaks and differences I noticed in my short trip in it so far. I can’t wait for this poxy weather to clear up and be able to bring it out for a right blast.

Congratulations Joe, it looks fantastic! 👌 Well wear.

Is the colour Dolphin Grey? Were you considering any other colour? After looking at the configurator, I find it hard to pick a standout colour.

Did you get Adaptive Chassis Control, Black Style Package, or Head-up Display?

How long between ordering and delivery?

Sorry for all the questions 😁

Well wear Joe and best of luck with it. I was one of the lads genuinely interested but an upcoming house build means it's just not the right time for me but I can guarantee anyone considering a MK8 this is the car to buy. It's absolutely immaculate with tiny miles. For context, my wife and I bought a new ID4 Pro Plus last May (after Joe bought one too and told me about the new specs and price cut) and we have more mileage on that now than he did in over 3 years in his CS. His car was garaged from new and extremely well minded.

    No bother, ask away!

It's moonstone grey. Its not unique to the GTI, or indeed the Golf, its common across the range, but its always caught my eye and was easily my first choice. I agree the colour palette isn't too inspiring. Considered Dolphin grey too, I've seen photos of the car in that colour and it really suits it. I don't like the Kings Red… too wine/burgandy looking for me. Thought about really splashing out and going with Oryx white, just not sure it's worth the hefty premium. A friend of mine bought one in the new "Ice blue" which is quite striking. There's another new blue too which I don't like and then you're left with black which is a definite NO. Life's too short for that…

Yes, have adaptive chassis. Other options on it are the wheels, pano roof and Harman Kardon audio (this is really awesome, tried it out tonight!).

Considered the black pack but decided against it as you lose the red grill stripe and then I feel it loses a big part of the signature GTI look. I even queried VW on it as they had incorrectly priced it at an insane €1700. It's now "only" about €250. I have a set of gloss black mirror caps off Ebay if I fancy a change of look later down the road, and then I sort of have a black pack!

Didn't pick the heads up either. I dunno, the car has huge screens as it is, do I need another screen on the windscreen?! It is nice to have though, I agree. I'm glad I picked the HK audio instead.

the standard spec on them is very good really, it has everything you’d really want as standard, even the winter pack and cameras are standard now which I paid extra for in the last one.

I ordered the car on October 23rd. So about 11-12 weeks? It's been in the country since the first week in January so the most painful wait was waiting on NVD to pull the thumb out and put it on a transporter!

Cheers Mark, your review of the standard car on those wheels was one of the many videos I’ve had on repeat for the last few months ☺️
