They are dammed if they do & dammed if they don't!

Realistically, are you a meteorologist? Do you work for the NECG? Neither am I nor do I.

I was in West Clare in 2014, it was a crazy storm, much later in the day. By evening power was back and my father was in the pub.

We'll chalk it down to difference of opinion. You're not fighting with someone on Facebook "Hun".

Sounds like dept of education might need to have a word with them, ive seen the below text going round to several schools as part of a standard text

In line with national guidance, all schools and childcare settings in affected areas must close during a Status Red warning.

Have to laugh. People posting here won't leave the house tomorrow but they have no problem with lads out collecting their bins.

Imagine going a few days with a full bin, the horror.

Even in orange the gusts might just finish off what was weakened in the red warning. I won't be going anywhere til at least Saturday. Have the fuel in for the fire if the electricity goes.

People need to stop worrying about the Dail. The people who warn us and prepare us for these events, the people who keep us safe during them and the people who co-ordinate the repairs and recovery afterwards will do their jobs regardless of who is Taoiseach and what went on the Dail this week.

Clear guidance is needed, lots of people don't really know how the system will progress.

I always thought this "it's the principal's decision" was a bit of a cop out. Weather can vary in small distances in fairness, but it leads to a very inconsistent approach to school closures. For example, during the last snow event, some schools in Galway closed for days when there was no need, and likely some others in worse areas reopened.

Aren’t they going for a 2 week hiatus after he’s sworn in anyway

Here's a chart showing the relationship between windspeed and energy:

    And an intuitive(ish) comparison table:

WTF do you want them to do, ok lads, big storm coming, people are whinging that it's not the main story at the moment, so for the sake of those people let's ignore all that's wrong with this situation and to hell with our long established democratic system. Jesus.

I think the fact that Met Eireann's prediction of over 130 km/h wind speeds is still considerably lower than some of the wind speeds predicted on here is a very ominous sign.

It looks like those of us in the worst affected areas will be in for an interesting morning tomorrow. I just hope that the possible damage and loss of life predicted here does not come to pass, but the signs are looking ominous unfortunately.

I would imagine that is the what they can withstand before being ripped off. Wonder what the level of impact from flying crap can they withstand

Anyone on here have any expertise in windows/glass?! We have large picture windows facing directly onto Shannon Estuary. They've held up fine in the past, I presume they have been designed to withstand extreme wind forces, but a bit nervous all the same..

They have a live tracker on the site with 11 separate updates sin the last hour alone. Its very disingenuous to say its "one segment at the side".

These are the type of sub headings:

'Do not, I repeat, do not go out during this event'

and there seem to be so many of them..Truly baffling that people cannot perceive what is potentially happening and accordingly make a sensible appraisal of what the outcomes could then be….but seems that everyone needs to be absolutely spoon fed everything?

borrowing from Chernobyl but I assume its that their warning system caps out at 130km/h hence they can't go higher?

Otherwise its a very baffling disparity.

Obviously a lot of scary numbers in terms of wind gusts being posted. What are we looking at in terms of sustained wind speeds along say the Galway and Mayo coasts? Interested to know how this compares to a US hurricane - are we talking the equivalent of Category 1 or Category 2 on the west coast in this case?

And what does that mean in terms of the long held view (by some) that true hurricanes aren't possible here?

Meanwhile someone else is wondering if JustEat deliveries will be affected.

A comparison with 1839 is valid for some forecast model output but I would assume modern building codes and practices would make a comparison of resulting damage difficult, if the exact same conditions were to develop late tonight (as in 1839) there would certainly be considerable damage but perhaps not the catastrophic damage experienced in 1839. Also people then likely had no idea a storm of any intensity was coming, let alone what they got, whereas now 90% of people in that region are going to be aware and will avoid risky choices (the 1839 winds set in during daylight and lasted into evening, if I recall details correctly, I hope people in Galway, Clifden, Westport, Connemara, exposed parts of Clare and possibly other locations will stay inside even if they suspect damage has occurred, until daylight and an interval of less severe winds to inspect, going out in darkness to look around will invite serious injury or worse from flying debris.

I posted elsewhere, over under for mace head top winds is looking like 72 knots gusting to 98. ... won't be that surprised if this does slightly downgrade at nowcast stage, as some have said, it is not likely to be more intense.

Maybe the incoming government should not have tried to pull a ridiculous stroke at a time of national emergency.

    Ignominious start for them.

They are boarding up the roof of the supermarket at Achill Sound and there was a crew outside removing pots.

This is getting extremely scary now.

Ok it is. This is the first picture, of what I'm assuming will be many, to really hit home about the severity of this.

Check the model. You can change this in their settings, but even then they dont have all the same ones you see here or that ME use in their visualisation
