No let up from the ECM18Z apart from possibly lighter along the S, SE and going through quickly there.

Im genuinley worried for folk on the west coast. Experts on Netweather uk site saying it's looking like a 1 in 100 year type scenario as forecast right now.

You have to add at least an hour post warning lift for staff etc to be able to get to the school/college too.

She made a hash of it again said we were under a red for rain and wind

Bit underwhelming from Joanna on the radio just there IMO. This is a dangerous storm and she did not get that point across. Strange.

100% agree, Thankfully I have no classes Friday but my route to the S4 bus is through 2 parks and I would NOT be walking through them in the A.M. if I was going to college.

My sister works as a primary school teacher, and she told me her school is waiting to call it tomorrow (I'm based in Dublin). I'm a bit baffled they're waiting to call because MÉ have already called the shots that its a red level criteria until 12. Considering most primary schools end by 2:30 latest, just stay closed you know?

If people in the high risk areas just stick to the guidance of staying indoors and off the roads during the worst of it then that will greatly reduce the risk to life. There will be lot of trees down, roofing material crashing down on pavements etc. It's only for a few hours, stay inside and off the roads.

For anyone more familiar with tracking these things, aren't 200 kph gusts hurricane force winds? Isn't this incredibly dangerous?

A lot of schools are starting to reach the point where they will end up having to open at February midterm or Easter to make up the time lost to snow etc.

They are very much damned if they do/damned it they don’t. Someone will be livid one way or the other and really it doesn’t need to be called until tomorrow as the kids have school Thursday anyways

When the ECM is outputting this so close to an event it's ominous IMO. I really fear for the safety of peope on the Aran islands and the other inhabited islands off the Galway & Mayo coasts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,805 ✭✭✭Rougies

They don't know the specifics yet, it's an explosively deepening storm and the models struggle with that. The whole country is on red warning. I mean, what more can you do?

Tell people in Galway to move to relatives in Mayo if they can, then tomorrow say NO ACTUALLY SORRY everyone in Mayo move to Galway, and then say, ah **** everyone move to Donegal, and then at the last minute the storm moves south and kills everyone in CORK!

There's zero chance of schools opening during mid term or Easter.

Sadly the problem with leaving these decisions to individual managers in schools/businesses is that this means entrusting people not educated in matters of public safety with decisions about public safety.

Law of the land really needs to change two where a red warning has the binding effect of ceasing all non essential activity, although I would suggest that to do so also means switching to an impact based model with geographical warning boundaries rather than county ones, same as the UK to prevent spurious warnings and apathy. And in fact that was meant to happen years ago.

Should be interesting here in Athenry. Our new home is about to be put to the test.

Most businesses have announced closed for all of Friday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,289 ✭✭✭alroley

That will never happen for a variety of reasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 richiekw

Those would be gusts, not sustained winds. But the ARPEGE model does show some sustained winds equivalent to Cat 1 hurricane strength. Anything in the 120 or over colours here. This would be similar to the 1945 storm.

120kph(65kts) or more yes just that 200 kph is incredibly stronger

TUD are resuming classes at 2pm, which on a Friday seems rather pointless. Especially considering there's no knowing what state the wider area will be in or if staff can make the journey.

Is there anyone here living on the Aran islands or Inisbofin? Hard to imagine what the wind speeds will be like out there. Graces7 not far away, but not as exposed as those islands I think.

That is just nuts if it's right. I really hope Arpege is overdoing it

Yes it's hurricane force, particularly in the vicinity of Galway judging by the models. As I live in Galway I'm actually scared this time and we're used to storms.

I hope Met Eireann and RTE upgrade the warnings because people will die tomorrow because we've got used to storms and think this is just another one.

It's not. I think we might be headline news around the world on Friday morning.

I'm not given to exaggeration or panic but this is bad.

Absolutely nothing from UCD on closures that I have seen outside of the estate services posting the weather warning, but I assumed classes after X time will run considering it would be up to the professor. I agree though this is rather pointless considering you won't know the extent of damages done between 6AM-12PM and furthermore, lets be honest here most students will just treat it as a day off because red warning = no college/school as it has always been.

Turning to the storm quickly, so much has changed in 24HRS and I am shocked at how much further upgrading this has gotten from models. I haven't seen increased upgrades closer to the event since the BFTE's 850 temps.

Yeah not budging , so consistent run after run, you will always get little wobbles . It looks like a very serious situation unfolding, huge amount of damage to be expected with power outages on a scale probably never seen before. Extremely dangerous to be out in. Would need to be mindful too of the risk to the likes of large bay windows .Was thinking too of coastal erosion. The islanders are tough and accustomed to storms but this will test them I'm afraid. I hope they are able to get their boats secured up along the coasts.

Schools sould also have to allow for a safety inspection to make sure nothing has been ripped off or driven into the buildings by the storm.

Lads I was shook looking at these charts to begin with, but having my mind blown by the fact that winds are exponential in nature - well, it's left me gobsmacked.

Whaddya mean a 40kmh wind isn't twice as strong as a 20kmh wind - it's 4 times stronger?! holy god Biddy

I may get out the smelling salts to get me through the next 48 hours tbh, i'm in an area forecast for 160-180kmh gusts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,406 ✭✭✭lucalux

Upgrade to what? Black? Gold level?

Red is the life-threatening-bad warning level - whether that's communicated appropriately, whether it reaches people, whether they heed it… There's as much being done in some ways as they can.

Some people won't hear a dickie bird about this at all, but most will - can't force people to act accordingly though

Handy graphic here for that from NOAA. Apologies if already posted. 1250+ posts here in 24hrs.

(Edit: removed the embed as it could be misleading to the uninitiated, there are several caveats. European windstorms are not hurricanes. Read more here if interesed https://www.noaa.gov/jetstream/tc-potential )
