I wouldn't be surprised if the next election is one agreed FF/FG candidate (not Bertie), one SF candidate and one LP/SD candidate; and the councillors sat on hard by their party HQs to not nominate anyone.

If you put a candidate forward, you need to fund them and I doubt the Greens would have the money. McDowell probably could fund himself, but won't get nominated.

I'd be very surprised if FF/FG agree a candidate if opposition parties are going to push for an election.

No he wouldn't the position is largely ceremonial Bertie would take the piss holding grand get-togethers and throwing bond villain style parties.

He'd be flying over to the horse races and man United games on the government jet probably try change the name of Aras to whatever swill he drinks now. I'd bet he'd go as far as M Bison in Street Fighter and try print his own currency

I've nothing against first names, but I will only address someone by their first name if I actually personally know that someone and if they know me. That's how it works in the real world. I don't know Ahern or any of the other politicians you have mentioned. Just because the media have you programmed to address these people by their first name's doesn't make it less ridiculous. It is ridiculous.

It is strange a few weeks ago people were saying how Female politicians are referred to by their first name eg Kamala or Hillary, but Trump, Obama, Biden are referenced via their surname. Though I don't think this is true TBH. Ahern is know and Berty even if I choose to spell the name wrong. Generally though on news and in the papers he will be Ahern or Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahearn, later reverting to Ahern.

    President Ahern sounds good. no?

But Berty to connect to the people, The People's President.

Bertie For President will be all over the election campaign.

Bertie would have thought he would have walked into the Presidency at one stage. But the economic crash ended that.

Bertie was a very shrewd politician more often than not he never said more than he had to. Very diplomatic, You would think if he was elected President that would continue.

Bertie would also like all those free tickets to matches that he would get as President as well.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

    ”media have me programmed”?

Sorry that’s complete and utter tripe

Well, where did you learn to address him by his first name then?

this is so trivial and off topic I really couldn’t be bothered - it’s obviously some pedantic issue that you’re willing to take to the Nth degree but it’s not for me thanks !

Maybe advisors and global economic issues made him do it.

Same way they made Bertie shipwreck the country's finances during the boom apparently.

Bertie preffered Fianna Fail candidate. (according to poll)

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/bertie-ahern-emerges-as-preferred-fianna-fail-candidate-in-race-for-the-aras-poll-shows/a724975287.html

It's obvious he'd make an excellent president.

"It's obvious he'd make an excellent president." - you mean the guy who told people who were worried about the economy to commit suicide - and then people committed suicide?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭John_Rambo

I don't think that would affect his role as the president.

Bertie would be a terrible president. He doesn't deserve the position after all his lies and of course destroying the economy. I hope he runs so that he is humiliated.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Ff fg candidates should not be entertained at all , they're in government. President should be different.

Has everyone forgotten the banking guarantee scheme that bertie and his government were behind and we are still paying taxes for that and will be for the next 50 years or so. He was the taoisach at the time.

hey german people Don't you worry about that 60 billion bet . If you loose the irish tax payers will pay it. It will all be grand.

How anyone would even consider him is beyond me.

The thing is - when its everybody's fault then its nobodies fault.

There was a global recession, but there was a reason the country sufferred more than others around northern Europe. And that responsibility ultimately lies with government. Yes it lies with the banks, and the central banks, but ultimately with government.

There are mitigating circumstances obviously, but the thing that always annoyed me with Bertie was that he could never acknowledge his own role as taoiseach - it was always someone elses fault.

To that end, the current government deserves a lot of credit for how its been run since.

Some people really lost the run of themselves. Bertie was an easy target for them to blame.

Time to put childish things aside.

We have to change the whole system. Bertie and his like have destroyed Ireland with their corrupted shenanigans and open door policies. I'd never vote for him, no matter how hard he tries to portray himself as the charming, but misunderstood good guy. They'll always be that unmentionable elephant in the room that contains £30,000 in cash with no bank account to put it in.

The needless unlimited bank guarantee that FG and SF, for some baffling reason, voted for. FF, FG and SF need to be reminded of that albatross forever.

The 100k level was more than sufficient for consumer protection.

Why would anyone want a corrupt toerag as president?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭John_Rambo

A lot of people believe he did more good than bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 880 ✭✭✭batman75

Their is no doubt that Bertie is an able politician and very intelligent. However telling people to go and commit suicide was one major gaff. Another was trying to tell us as a Minister for Finance he didn't have a bank account was first rate gaslighting. In terms of being President he lacks the gravitas, finesse and polish to represent Ireland with dignity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭John_Rambo

If nothing else, we can all agree that our perception of Bertie Ahern remains deeply polarised. For some he’s the Taoiseach who secured peace and steered Ireland through unprecedented growth, while for others he’s a symbol of political scandal and the reckless economics that led to the crash, personally, I feel he's done more good than bad.

Ah Bertie the great deregulator. Sure why not have the lad that fvcked the economy back with his snout in the trough again. Be grand.

A lot of people who are old FF 😐

I don't believe anything he says anymore after the brown envelope debacle .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭John_Rambo

Yeah, fair enough. I’m not old FF (though I am old!). I’ve always liked Bertie, I think he’s a solid diplomat. I’m from an era that understands the real importance of the Good Friday Agreement. It's a bit like I can’t stand Sinn Féin, but I do have a lot of time for Mary, I like her.

I find it a big odd that people actually think the downfall of the economy is down to Bertie alone. That's nuts.

Some context needed for Bertie being preferred candidate:

Also - I had forgotten how annoying the title of this thread was with the glaring typo
