I'm sure this is a "how long is a piece of string" question, but any idea (maybe from the 2022/previous year's competitions) how many OOMs are pulled in a batch? I.e., Those in Batch 1 are currently having their applications assessed and will get a new OOM/be eliminated before they move on to Stage 3 Interviews for the successful candidates and I'm just curious roughly how many get pulled into Batch 1 of the overall 2,867 candidates who have passed Stage 1.

It seems like a really short competition if it’s only due to run until the end of the year? I had thought that other competitions ran for two years usually? Is there any chance that this may be a typo (or extended)? Fingers crossed maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 246 ✭✭myk

I assume it is a typo as well. The alternative is that they want to really hire lots of new APs in advance of the EU presidency and then let the numbers drop down by attrition after this year.

Got a score of 1,650 but failed SJ. Maybe I should have slowed down a bit for that one...

max score is 1600 unless you're adding maths in there too? Your score is just verbal + SJ

Apologies, yeah that's correct. A bit over 1,000 without numerical.

In 2022 campaign they took people that scored 1059 and above to shortlisting stage. I think I read this was approximately 400 candidates.

Very useful comment. To add to it, after getting Stage 1 result end of Jan 2023 with a circa 600 OOM, I got Stage 2 result the end of June 2023. So they got as far as 600 OOM within six months in the last campaign and, going by the above comment, as far as 1,200 OOM within 13 months. This should give people a general idea of how fast PAS gets through its shortlisting process for AP - 100 OOM per month … assuming they take the same approach and invest same manpower into the process as last time round.

Congrats to all that have made it into Stage 2 !

This is as far as I have got to date with applying for AP open competitions.

    Open Steam:  15 (Sligo)

    Total Score:  1040

Congrats all! I scored +1000 and got an OOM of 995 in Dublin, bit dissapointed with the score but happy to have passed. Can’t see how they just start sifting through 2,700 + application forms and doubt they’ll get to mine before year end. Can anyone confirm based on previous?

Is that score for the open or interdepartmental stream? If Open I would think they will get to you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 Elpeep

Thanks. Do you know if that 400 was all in the first batch? Or do you mean 400 people were called over the lifetime of the competition? Hopefully just Batch 1!

Also, are they going off scores (so everyone above a certain score gets called in Batch 1), or a decision to call the an approximate number for the first set of interviews, so the top approximate 400 (to allow for groupings of people on the same score) ranked by score regardless of what that score actually is?

Interestingly, judging by some of the disclosed scores here, a score of 1059 would give someone an OOM of around 6-700 on the Open competition this time round. So a score of 1059 this wouldn't necessarily be sufficient if they're only calling the first 400 people for Stage 3 (Batch 1) this time, while it would have been sufficient previously (but of course it could be sufficient for later Batches, I really don't mean to make anyone disheartened).

There's a thread for the 2022 comp which is worth reading if you have the time.

Post #1289 gives some detail of how it worked for that comp: "Based on the number of applicants Public Appointments Service (PAS) called batches to Stage 2 based on score from Stage 1. Three batches have been called so far. Batch 1 had a score above 1159, Batch 2 had a score of approx 1111-1159. Batch 3 had a score of approx 995-1111 I believe." They did call Batch 4 aswell is appears.

As each competition has different tests and the distribution of the scores will vary, you'd expect a similar pattern for this competition(?)

Very helpful, thank you. I will have a look at that thread again. I'm just trying to figure out if my score means my application will be considered as part of Batch 1 or not (looks like it will). Now all I need to do is worry about whether it will pass scrutiny and also start to prep for answering questions on it. If there is only a year for this panel to get people interviewed and assigned, they will probably be moving pretty quickly!

400 people were brought in the first batch to stage 2. Reminder that you are not called for interview at this stage, your application form is assessed in stage 2, and many people are cut at this stage and not called for interview. They then proceed to interviews in stage 3 for those who are successful in stage 2, and create a final order of merit based on total scores from all stages combined, I believe. This will determine where you are at, provided you are successful in all stages.

Also there was a comment that the cut of point in the 2022 comp was 1059. I applied for that comp also, and checked the message board for it last night. The cut off point for batch 1 was a score of 1159.

Once the first batch is finalised, they will then move on to processing Batch 2, which involves bringing the next 400 or so people to stage 2, repeat the same process, move on to batch 3 if the numbers are required to fill vacancies/the competition is not finished etc.

For context, I scored OOM from the initial assessments of around 1250 in the 2022 comp. They reviewed my application form in Feb 2024, which would have been batch 3 or 4 maybe, not too sure. I was excluded on the basis of my form, and having reviewed it prior to this comp, I totally understand why. I was only in the CS around a year, so I had no interd option at the time, and didn't have the experience.

I would think the cut of point for the score is determined by how the top 400 people did. So the cut off point may be different this comp compared to the last. Hope that helps. I would think PAS will email everyone again by the end of Jan with this information.

Yes, I'm aware that it's the assessment of application stage next and that this has to be passed to progress to Stage 3 Interviews. I am a tad worried about this stage as I'm afraid I took the wrong approach with Q1. But, on the off-chance I do make it through, no harm in starting to do some prep work already. Especially as it looks as though they will be moving quickly to meet the tight time-frame they've set themselves.

And by prep-work, I just mean thinking about the sort of questions that could be asked around each capability, going through my examples and making sure I have back-ups (they did ask me to alternative examples than the ones in my form in a previous HEO competition). That sort of thing.

Just remember there could be 400 people in the top 200 OOM . There could be multiple candidates with same score. OOM does not equal number of applicants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 Elpeep

Oh, I thought that where, for example, 10 people have the same score (Group A for the purposes of this point), they get the same OOM, but the next highest score's OOM would be "Group A + (10-1)". So if you have an OOM of 200, it would be approximately (but not exactly) 200 people on that point. I didn't realise it would be so widely divergent!

very helpful info. I scored 1114 and oom 637 so now expect not to get called up until summer. For further perspective, i was oom 207 in last comp and got results after two weeks but failed to move on to next stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭Curranjo

Im not sure if that is correct, i remember reading somewhere that if two people get same score, something is looked at to get a unique oom for everyone. Open to correction though.

ON the off chance I get through the application form review, has anyone been through the AP interview before? Can you give any insights as to whether there is a presentation etc and if it follows the usual competency/capability format or if there are any curve balls to be aware of?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 Elpeep

I've worked on internal competitions, and where candidates had the same score after evaluation (rather than testing), we would give them both the same OOM, but then the next highest score's OOM would be "Previous OOM + (Number of people on previous OOM minus 1)". I thought PAS would do something similar.

I wonder if this is something they ever clear up for people if they email!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 483 ✭✭eroc79

My understanding of oom is that if you have an oom of 200, there are 199 people on higher score than you. There could be a number of people on the same oom as you. If PAS called everyone up to oom 200 there could be something like 250 people called in that batch.

Hi, I received OOM of around 255 for the open competition. I put down Dublin as my county preference. This is my first time applying for a civil service job so I’ve no clue how the process works. I’m just wondering if 1) is approx 255 a decent score and 2) what sort of timeframe would I be looking at if I’m lucky enough to get called for an interview?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,506 ✭✭✭bren2001

OOM 225 for Dublin is top 10-15% of successful applicants so it's pretty good.

Nobody knows the timeframe. During the 2022 comp (see the last page or two for discussion), they got through 100 forms a month so it would be April before you get your result. However, nobody had a clue the resources they have. Could be slower but it could be faster

    Hi,

I am not sure I fully understand the process and would love your input.

I have received my results last week and to be honest I thought they were not great (at the same time I was sick when doing the tests, so I knew I was not at my best).

I was not in the top quandrant for any of the tests. However, to my suprise, my OOM is 12! I am not in Co. Dublin and I am in the open stream. Were the answers from the application form taken into account for the OOM?

Is 12 high for outside Dublin? Or is there only usually veeeery few openings in the country?

When they decide who to call for an interview do they go by the test scores or the OOM?
