Welcome to fighting games, where the reason you lost is because your opponent is using an overpowered character, using cheap moves or crappy developer hit boxes but it's never about your own ability.

This is why I only used to play against the CPU. It doesn't spam cheap moves or recognise that I'm too slow at blocking lows.

You say cheap moves. Your opponent will tell you it's the only normal with recovery that means they won't get countered 🤣

I used to be a total Tekken acolyte but I’m not sure which game it was turned me off a bit. For someone who never paid much heed to Mortal Kombat I have played through the last few games and enjoyed them all thoroughly.

Top of the pile for me re: Beat’em ups of the last decade have been the Injustice games. Probably not a finely tuned as the classics but still brilliant games.

Despite me thinking Mortal Kombat is a bit naff I do have to admire their focus on making a fun single player experience. SF6 is the only one that comes close lately and that seemed to be on response to MK. Every other games single player experience was bad AI and some single screen visual novel garbage between fights.

Didn't like the GTA-lite vibe they were going for. Sex jokes, jiggle physics and swearing?

Its was also stupidly hard in the worst, badly designed GTA mission, way.

I always loved doing all arcade endings in fighting games, both from a completionist standpoint but also seeing how endings may intertwine, which may become canon, which are just a bit of comedy/fun.

MK really kept pushing to do interesting things in terms of story. Even before MK9 (2011), Deception and Armageddon had fun little story side-games. Then the MK style of story got used in Injustice as well.

I have to say, Tekken 8 included an MK-style story mode (though you play as Jin for the majority of it) and it was a lot of stupid fun. Some great surprises in it, and seeing everyone talk different languages and all understand each other perfectly (including King who is a man in a jaguar mask who just growls) was a joy.

The internet: the storyline of Kingdom Hearts has deep lore and is peak fiction, up there with the greats of cinema and literature.

    Peak Fiction:

I haaaaaaaaated Tekken going down the stand alone story mode. The amount of hours I spent in the older games playing through every character to get their own specific ending. Even if they were naff and a bit of fluff it was fun as hell.

Also in terms of depth of characters I never really warmed to the main characters of the Tekken series. Heihachi and his family members do nothing for me.

Pound for pound who do you think has the best roster? Street Fighter has to be up there. All classics and all killer no filler.

I remember the CGI in the old PlayStation Tekken games being mind blowing, Namco might even have been ahead of Square Enix when it came to pre-rendering. They look awful quaint now although somehow look better than the PS2 mortal Kombat prerendered endings.

As for best roster, I do like Street Fighter 2 but not sure if it's nostalgia or just how iconic it is. There's a lot of personality in each of those characters.

Samurai Shodown 2 has a great roster as well. Very distinct characters that all play very differently from each other. They dropped some of the diff ones from SS1 and the new additions are excellent. The latest Samurai Shodown roster is equally excellent as well especially with the season passes. Even the cameos from other game series feel right at home. That game deserves more recognition but the Stadia launch really dulled it's impact.

Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves is another great roster of really fun characters that are all distinct and play very differently.

Always liked King of Fighters, despite the massive rosters they have a lot of different play styles and distinct characters. I'll got with kof 13 as my favourite as I'm most familiar with that and it has Mai.

Quite like Soul Calibur as well, especially soul Calibur 2 which has the perfect mix of distinctive characters. GameCube of course as Link was a perfect fit for the series.

MK1 and 2 despite my misgivings have a good cast as well. Way more iconic than later games and with the right ratio of edgy to silly.

The story mode in T7 was awful, but it was a lot of fun in T8. T8 also has far better Arcade endings for each character. But yeah, the Mishima's aren't that great, and Heihachi seems to get a new kid every two games. Plus they killed him off in T7 because they wanted to bring the Heihachi V Kazuya story to an end, and have now brought him back in T8.

As for best roster, can't really argue too much against SF, though the core MK roster is so iconic at this stage that it's forced the studio to keep finding ways to reboot their story to bring it back to being centered around the main MK1-MK2 cast.

Got the bad ending on the second campaign of Wizardry Variants Daphne. Must have over 30+ hours put into it now and despite being a F2P Gacha game it puts being a good game first. Honestly think it's the best dungeon crawler I've played since Etrian Odyssey.

I will never happen but I'd kill for a modern day update of World Heroes.

The difference between the Ubisoft approach (spend a decade on a doomed, bland, confused pirate spin off to a popular hit) and the RGG Studios approach (release a batshit, delightful pirate spin off to a popular hit barely a year after said popular hit) couldn’t be more stark.

All it needs are sea shanties and it's a classic.

I just can't understand how Ubi made such an epic mess of that. They had the template, something that was already really fun, and it's just took a decade to deliver on anything. Real open goal stuff, how they could screw it up is bizarre.

    Confirmed!

I think I'm gonna like this one. We need more zany madness in gaming.

It's because they spent so long trying to figure out how best to monetise it, probably switching from DLCs to lootboxes to season passes to battlepasses to live service etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,555 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Exactly and RGG are like "you know what would be fun? Captain Majima in a pirate adventure" and someone just said yes, that sounds fun, do it" I'm hoping it was that simple. With RGG though, i can picture how they come up with some of their crazy quests, hard to imagine devs being shut down much where as with Ubi, i imagine the opposite. Shareholders want live service and devs have to work around it. I'm sure some try to speak up but either get shut down or nothing comes off it.

Having played the Judgment games a few years ago just got round to getting into the main series recently. 0 and 1 done in Dec, gonna start 2 soon. The games are never not fun. So really looking forward to this Pirate madness

On the topic of PS3 emulation on PS5. Implicit conversations added it to their syrup engine roadmap. Still in the "dreaming about" stage but they do move fairly quickly.

Anyone playing the POE2 early access. Rolled a few characters to see what the different classes are like. Still a very raw game

Finally finished Baldurs Gate 3 at the weekend. I had gotten up to act 3 last year but got distracted, created a new character and started again in November.

Unbelievable game really. 120 hours start to finish but feel like I’ve only scratched the surface with all of the different classes and quest options. I will definitely have another playthrough but not for a while, I’m still too attached to my rogue-thief drow!

Been playing a game called 'ForTheKing!'.

Very simple, but nice and enjoyable.

It's a 'roguelike, procedurally generated' turn based strategy game.

Downloaded from the PS5 essentials collection

Indiana Jones is so good. I was playing it over the weekend. I'm still in the Vatican. Trying to do as much as I can before I move to what ever place will be next.

After the excitement of Sonic 3 in the household, I went digging and found Shadow the Hedgehog in my collection for the OG Xbox and went to hook it up. Bought it as part of a bundle years ago but never really put any time into it other than making sure the console turned on. Just checked and the game is scratched to oblivion so will have to find another one for the daughter, but burnout3 Takedown works and god you forget just how much fun these games were

The game being scratched was the universe helping you out. You'll make your daughter hate videogames playing that game. Stick to the 2D stuff or even the one or two good 3D games (pro tip: the adventure games are awful and sonic fans that recommend them are mentally ill).
