    Gameboy takes double AAs.

I'm playing 4D Tetris while the rest of you's play Ubisoft games.

You know, I got an analogue pocket for xmas, which is quite nice. It's essentially added the entire backlog of SNES and GB/A games onto my list of things to get around too, right now I'm going through Super Metroid again, 100% it, should be finished up soon.

What would your top ten games be from SNES/Megadrive/the various gameboys, Retro? PM me if you don't want to turn this thread into list fest

Absolutely adoring my analogue pocket as well. I'm only really using it for handheld games, it's great exploring the neo geo pocket library again since I got it.

I'll try do some lists off the top of my head with lesser known titles, you probably know stuff like Mario, sonic and Zelda are essential. Happy to do more.

Hearing a few people online talking about Cryptmaster as a game of the year contender:

Gorgeous art style that reminds me of the Dark Spire a bit. Meant to be a mix of dungeon crawling, typing and clever puzzles.

Is it a bigger stinker than Legend of Dragoon? 😉

Funnily enough it does have a lot of similarities in a way. LoD was supposedly the Final Fantasy killer whereas Killzone was the Halo killer. Both games feel like they are copying someone else's homework without understanding the assignment and come off as full soulless corporately managed cash grabs. What sets Killzone 2 apart is that it's not completely boring and doesn't last 40+ hours.

I remember enjoying the Killzones at the time. I then got a 360, played Halo and wondered why a **** Killzone copy was getting better praise...

Killzone copy it's the other way round…

edit: You probably know that anyway just thought I'd say it.

Halo was out two or three years before Killzone 😂🤦‍♂️

Playing the Tomb Raider remastered collection. Being able to flip between the old and remastered graphics instantly with the press of a button is cool.

I also noticed I have a bit of a Mandela effect with the first game. I always associated Lara Croft with that French braid ponytail and thought that's what she always had but in the first game, it's just a hair bun tied up with what looks like masking tape.

Anyone remember Rico from Killzone, aka the worst character in all of videogames?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,128 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

First introduced in TR2 and the physics on it were quite impressive.

As that the one who has a sibling called Puerto?

Another thing about the old Tomb Raiders that I forgot is how sparse the combat is. An occasional ape, lion or bat to shoot so far and the odd human, which are bullshit as they can shoot through walls I've found out.

Not a complaint really. I prefer pottering about doing the puzzles over shooting. They're chill podcast games really.

The way the new Tomb Raider trilogy either undermined or got rid of everything that made the original games tick remains a real travesty IMO. Hopefully the new reboot gets back to what made the original series so special.

It was such a disappointment. You just know some bigwig said to make it like a ubisoft uncharted and it completely lost the charm of the original which is a pity because the mechanics were all there for a great game. The quiet moments in a puzzle tomb were excellent but even that was ruined by the game help. I remember going into 1 and scanning the room to see what was going on. Before i could complete a circle of panning the camera around, Lara said "i just need to pull that lever to open the door" and the camera auto panned to the lever. Atrocious design.

I'm from Buenos Aires and I say kill them all!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,128 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Old school tomb raider is you versus the environment and figuring it out, the new one was about recharging your health behind a chest high wall. The only series that came close to what tomb raider had was the sands of time era Prince of Persia games. It's such a shame that playing the remaster now and the games still feel unique.

I remember all the reviews noting ‘the tombs are really good’ - but in reality you have to put up with hours of AAA slop just to get to the tombs, which last maybe 15-20 mins tops and are easily missed / entirely optional. And then as you say the classic AAA voice prompt is likely to ruin the puzzle anyway.

Whereas the first Tomb Raider is all tomb raiding, all the time - and for all its obvious issues as an early 3D pioneer, much of the design holds up remarkably well.

I remember getting stuck in the original TR (at or near release), with a section where you had to jump up to a ledge, and then look 180 degrees behind you and up to carry on climbing. Daft now I think about it, but had me stumped for ages

I was also pretty proud that I worked out how to do the dive into water, and be able to do the hand stand - neat it had easter egg animations like that ~30 years ago

TR2 had me stuck for ages because they introduced a new move to the game where you can turn around mid air. It's only explained in the manual but I had a lend of the game without a manual so didn't know about it. It's only really needed in two areas. The first is the Marie Celeste area which I ended up finding speedruns glitches and got through it but then got stumped on a section in the very late tibet levels when it was absolutely needed to progress. Figured it out after about a week.

This is why we need the :pac: back. I still preferred Killzone, just couldn't get into Halo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,613 ✭✭✭ShagNastii

Haha the joys of being stuck on an old game. I remember being dead stuck on TR2 at a certain part and only getting around it because one of the magazines used to have a walkthrough part for different parts of games.

Literally the same is solved now by YouTube-ing the bit in about two seconds.

I got stuck on the noob tube in super Metroid for weeks and abandoned the game. Only saw the solution while browsing YouTube and saw an old advert for the super Nintendo that I was nostalgic for. They gave away the solution in the advert. Ended up finishing the game because of that ad 😂

I mean there's no accounting for taste but I don't see how even Killzone 2 fans can think it's better than Halo 1, 3, ODST or Reach (halo 2 is poo). The master chief collection gave me a new found appreciation for 3 and Reach.

As for Killzone 1, I'm baffled it had any fans. That game is a stinker.

I'm pretty agnostic about the whole thing but there is no doubt Halo was one of those games that was a complete gamechanger and blew all it's gaming peers out of the water at the time.

On console. I'll still maintain that the biggest thing it did was bring PC level fps games to console and that it's biggest innovation was adding auto aiming and cursor following that made these games playable on a dual analogue controller as without them fps games are miserable and just don't work.

Some Virtua Fighter 6 footage was released and the animation system looks incredible. It's way ahead of any other fighting game and probably ahead of what even naughty dog are doing:

Damn. It's like they hired the Sifu guys to do the fighting! It has garnered my interest!

Re: Halo, tried the first one, didn't like it took an entire clip to kill the first enemies ("you're supposed to headshot"...), didn't get very far in it and wrote off the series as not for me. Tried some of the later ones but meh. Not discounting the impact it had, just didn't grab me is all.
