The usual nonsense list like this where ever best game ever was made within the last 15 years and a few oldies we were told were the best games ever because they are popular.

Imagine if a movie list like this was made that had the avengers end game sharing the spot light with citizen Kane and Casablanca with nothing from Akira Kurosawa, Bergman and Tarkovsky there.

It also highlights how ludicrous it is to name 50 of the best games over 60 years of releases, especially when it's near impossible to keep up with releases from the last 15 years.

You sure you played Halo because it's very obvious you don't go for headshots as the big enemies have energy shields. It's more, use energy weapons to dissipate the shields (Disclaimer: but screw that, the ballistic weapons are weak but go 'bbbbrrrrrrr' with really meaty sound effects so we all just use them).

VG247 thinking it was going to be a much different movie than i was, apparently.

Not endorsing the list, just sharing it.

These lists are handy for seeing what you've missed.

Definitely think BOTW deserves the top spot. The sequel is better but loses the simplicity and magic of the original. Also Super Mario World and Tetris. What wonderful games. All Nintendo console launch games. I know Tetris existed before, but this was/is the definitive portable Tetris.

I wonder if Nintendo can create something really special as a launch game for Switch 2. I'm really not interested in the hardware, just wondering if they can recreate the magic.

Can't remember how I did that the first time I played it but I remember seeing later about environmental hints like the previous room being similar but the tube missing. Also think it was pictured in the box or the manual, or maybe the Attract mode which also supposedly shows the Crystal Flash move to recharge energy.

The problem with lists like that that have only obvious and hugely popular picks only is there's very little room for the average player to have missed anything on it. A 50 game list by its nature can't be comprehensive, so it needs to at least be interesting.

To me the real benefit of any best of list - whether of 'best of a year' or 'best of all time' - is when it includes curveballs or intriguing, lesser known choices. Obviously any list is going to include some proportion of obviously great, 'consensus' games… but I think for readers they're much more interesting when it's not just the usual suspects, or at very least have inclusions that are worthy of debate.

Remake Jak & Daxter, ya bastards.

Tetris is the best example of a truly great game. It's enjoyed by everyone from kids to grannies, from casual to pro players and stayed the test of time. You can still pick up the same Gameboy version today and play it and it's still great.

No need for updated modern controls or graphics. Just fantastic 😍

Still the best thing Naughty Dog have done and probably Sony's best platformer until Astrobot.

I'm more a Puyo Puyo fan. I like my puzzle games with combos.

It really is a timeless classic. There's very few games I can point like it where they have aged enough so well and yet remain as utterly compelling and essential as the day they came out. Stuff like SMB3, Super Metroid, Doom, Robotron 2084. You kind of have to give a game 20 years to know whether it will be an absolute classic or age (and sometimes you just know something is an all timer, like Obra Djinn).

While we are all having love ins for PS3 games that don't deserve any love does anyone remember MAG?

I remember Sony bugging it up for ages, a fps game that supporter 256 players at once. I played the demo and my response was 'is this it?'. It just felt like a really bland battlefield yet despite it having 256 players it felt like a standard 8v8 game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,374 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

    Unsurprisingly I loved MAG 🤣

One of the first online shooters I played that had a command structure in it. Where players had ranks and different roles. It was 256 players, But each section of the map had it's own objective to focus the action and keep the crowds apart. And part of that was the higher ups directing it. It was like herding cats most of the time, but it was still great when it worked.

Once you got to the middle section all hell broke out.

When I see battlefield trying to do 128 players and missing the mark it's remarkable to think they got 256 into a semi coherent form on a small map.

Still enjoying my play through of Resistance. Just over half way through it. Some pretty epic battles even if the shooting is becoming a bit stale. I'll prob still make it to the end.

There's also pretty credible rumours around the PS5 getting native PS3 support too. Apparently they have it sorted of working but the list of games that work is not massive.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,128 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

In the case of MAG I just didn't get it or what made it special. Seemed to be a hard sell to most people after the demo but the people that did like it enjoyed it.

I can imagine if it is coming it's been a lot of hard work for Sony. The PS3 is a tough machine to emulate, particularly when it comes to timing since the transfer speeds between the spu's and CPU core are faster than anything the PS5 or a PC can do.

    Longer clip here

It boggles my mind how smooth that is and how a) it'll work and b) they accomplished that. Did they create different block animations for numerous different types of attacks (eg. high right punch, high left punch, mid right punch, low left kick etc) so if you block in the right direction it leads both characters into the correct animation, or you press block at the right time and it essentially acts like a parry?

Haven't played a VF game since VF4, which may not seem that long since this is only VF6 but I just checked and VF4 was released 2001, which is just crazy. Very interested in this though. If it plays half as good as these clips look it could be amazing.

As impressive as it is, the video does stress 'not actual gameplay' - would be an accomplishment if it gets even close to that (and Ryu Ga Gotoku are generally excellent animators), but that's still a fairly substantial caveat to keep in mind until something more final emerges.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,711 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Oh yeah, huge pinch of salt. But VF was always a lot less flashy than its counterparts, so if they've managed to incorporate a wide range of actual block animations it could look amazing, rather than the usual fighting game blocking animation of just holding your hands in front of you and nothing affects you.

I actually think a MAG update could do really well now. It was a good idea with rough execution at a time where console multiplayer shooters were in their infancy, but they’ve come a long way since then and the 256 players is still somewhat of a USP.

But it would need to be cheap or most likely free considering it’s main competitor is Warzone.

Annoying that the likes of Spyro and Crash get remasters/remakes while J&D is left to gather dust when it's vastly superior to both.

I'm convinced it would sell well too if they pulled the trigger on it.

Honestly, as much as I enjoyed Jak and Daxter (which my brother got for xmas one year and I had completely ignored until he booted it up and we ignored my "Dirge of Cerberus" altogether), I don't think I'd buy a remaster, the original is available on the PS5 and still plays silky smooth

Apparently they have the guy that created VF back for this one after he spent time creating Tekken, then Tobal No.1 and the Bouncer. Apparently he is obsessed with fluid realistic blocking in fighting games so could well be part of the plan. I know Namco showed off Tekken 8 with 'not actual gameplay' which ended up being very close to actual gameplay.

The problem is it will come with Jak 2 which smells of poo.

Fed up of clicking all squares containing buses? How about a Doom Captcha

    And the article about it

Not a chance the finished game will play anything like that. Unfortunately.
Also, that top 50 games of all time list - it didn’t list Ocarina of Time or Mario 64 at all, rubbish list. 😁

I think this is where we need to be now. Graphically there isn't much more room for vast improvement at this stage.

Next level game play is where gaming will step up now. We have seen shades of it. The fighting styles of SIFU which as been stated as an example.

Fighting game fans are eating well at the moment. SF6 and Tekken 8 being great VF on the way and Fatal Fury Mark of the Wolves looking to be an all time classic going by fgc people that have played the early builds.

I'd been far more into Mortal Kombat than Tekken over the last 10 years or so, but MK1 was awful imo, and Tekken 8 consumed most of my gaming time last year. The evolution of tools it gives you to get better, train and practice was amazing in T8. The ability to go into a replay of your match and then take control during it to try and learn how to avoid/punish specific opponent/character moves is incredible. I mentioned before that I've been playing as Hwoarang in Tekken for about 25 years since T3, but I got far better with him after 25 days of playing T8 than I'd ever been before (well, partially because I forced myself to start playing it online against real opponents rather than the CPU, as real opponents didn't fall for my 5 moves of doom every round so I had to learn more moves).

The Kameo system in MK1 was just an annoyance.

MK always felt stiff to me. The old games are kind of bad imo especially compared to what was available from Capcom and SNK. The new ones have been much better admittedly but it still just feels wrong to me.

It's good to see fighting games get much better training modes. It's also frustrating that it took so long because it was a solved problem, VF4 evo on the PS2 had by far and away the best training in any fighting game and it's taken years for other games to come close. I remember when playing sf4 and being told the only way to learn how to FADC was to practice it for a week. Then there's stuff like KoF13 were I could t even finish the tutorial thanks to SNK 'pretzel' stick movement (which thankfully snk have abandoned and made some of the most accessible fighters available). SF6 seems to have made good in roads as well. You really need more than a training room, move lost and maybe some combo trials these days otherwise new players just feel intimidated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,711 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah I gave SF6 a bit of a go but there's so much to learn that even with the new simplified controls I just couldn't get a flow going. I know there's criticism of the length of Tekken's move lists for each character, but so many of the moves you'll rarely use or just become filler in the middle of a combo, whereas the basic launch moves and punishes for your character are really what Tekken pushes you to learn and really gives you the tools to do so with really great training tools like punishment training, jumping into replays etc. It's why it's the first fighting game that I really gave a go online, and got a lot further up the ranks than I ever thought I would.

That said, a lot of characters in T8 have some utterly bullsh*t moves and advantages that can be incredibly frustrating. This is a martial arts fighting tournament. Put away the gun and sword, quit teleporting, and someone really needs to ban these two giant bears from competing. I don't care if Kuma's in a headband and karate gi, he's a bear.

Its a fighting game. Unless you are a top tier bellend then there's always BS to deal with! I'm amazed most of these games are as balanced as they are but there's always an imbalance in terms of characters and match ups.

As for SF6 you kind of learn that most aren't viable and you fall back on bread and butter combos with wide input windows and hit confirm that doesn't leave you open. The new mechanics are intimidating though even to me but it seems the windows on them are quite wide. I'd love to try and get into it this year.

Ah yeah, I'm mostly just bitching because so many people online complain about how strong Hwoarang is or how annoying he is to fight against because he has frame advantage on a lot of moves and a lot of different flowcharts of moves, whereas there are characters who can literally teleport or jump back and counter when you get close to them, get their health back through moves/abilities, chain throws, ranged attacks, quicker armoured launch moves etc. Really every character has some advantages others don't have, but some are still far more advantageous than others.

Yet Hwo gets hate because he kicks good.
