And don't forget the separate ways dlc for resident evil 4. It's really good.

Are you really complaining about the combat when most of the action games you like are dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, poke, repeat ad nauseum? :P

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,128 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Souls isn't about dodging. It's about rolling.

Is the combat in Prince of Persia The Lost Crown "souls like". It's a lot of fun, except for the last boss, which I think I have sussed now. Maybe I'm just better able to handle 2D. 😁 And it has super well designed controls. Also you can retry the fight immediatly without having to waste loads of time getting back to it.

Well I finished and loved it, so on that alone I'd say it's not! A tad difficult at times, but nothing frustratingly so I found. And definitely one of the best Ubisoft games of recent times. Think I struggled a bit with that last one too, but got there.

There is a fair bit of dodging/ parrying and knowing when to use special powers for most benefit so it is similar especially to Elden Ring, its a great little game and thankfully goes away from the Ubisoft clone.

Spiderman 2 has been fine so far but the side missions etc are very poor, story is fine but the slow bits are very very slow, combat is pretty much same as its always been press square over and over and if you have a certain time of boss either slide under or parry. Makes doing the clean ups of sandman crystals tedious.

Getting PS5 Elden Ring. It's 23 stg on Amazon and if I don't like it, I can sell it. Will give it a good try 😁 That's the last of my gift vouchers done and dusted for this year.

Will re-org the backlog and move "started but fell asleep" games to the back of the list.

Have enough stuff to keep me going at my pace until PS6 Pro comes out.

I always feel cold playing Mafia II.

I forget that game. Played it on release years ago. That remaster of Mafia(first one) was brilliant I thought. Visions of me stopping at two petrol stations in a banjaxed car with a really, really bad fuel leak off the direct route while the timer is going in a side mission will haunt me. Another side mission I had to drive a race car(old fashioned one with no roof and skinny tyres) off a trailer and pick another drive that onto the trailer and run back to the other car drive for miles around the map while a timer is going and repeat the same car swap on a few different trailers around the map a number of times while parking the different(same car each time just different colours) car back to the first spot.

Finished Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Wasn't even trying and finished the final boss easily first time tonight ... after getting nowhere the other day. I think when you step away and go back you give your brain time to sort it out. That and a YouTube video 😁

A great game. No filler. Excellent platforming, combat, exploration, puzzles, controls, art, music. Very relaxing game too, no ridiculous busy work to get stressed out about, and a lot of variety.

The credits went on for ages ... I think everyone who works in Ubisoft was on the list. . I see Gareth Coker did a lot of the music. He also did the music in the Ori games, which are similar games and favourites of mine too.

I think that team could do an excellent metroidvania version of Ghosts 'n Goblins. It really feels like a classic 80s/90s arcade/console game. They just nailed it.

Soul Reaver 2 remastered. While the original was a massive step up from 1, the laziness is even more prevalent here in the remaster. Most of the textures got a bare minimal improvement, and some areas/scenes got none. The Elder God only had his eyes updated, and they're worse imo. Ice got no improvement. Janos's place again got minimal to no improvements... and they've introduced game breaking bugs.

I don't remember any issues/crashes on the PS2, but twice I've lost over 30+min of progress, once due to a font enemy glitching into the ground so wouldn't die or respawn back at the font (part of a puzzle so couldn't bypass it). Second one just now had me phase into the ground invisible while the camera just kept zooming out into oblivion. There's also a black box over the 3 mummies in the air temple that is not there in the og when you switch over. This issue is on all platforms. Seeing as it's been a month with no update, looks like it was a release and forget game.

Legacy of Kain Souler Reaver 1 & 2 Slightly Reskinned. And some of the reskinning, imo, looks worse than the original. Janos doesn't look as old. Vorador doesn't look as battled. Moebius's eyes are terrible. Kains not much better. A certain human character looked like a wax work... a quick cash in job by the looks of it. Thanks Embracer! Now please sell the licence so someone else can do a proper job on it. Games are still playable, they're not Rockstar remaster broken. But poor effort overall, be it Aspyrs fault or Embracers.

I really feel sorry for the citizens of New York when after around 10 times of doing the same random car chase/ battle/ building fire I now just skip all of that to just water plants to get rid of annoying stuff from the map.

Less traversal is good and ya can fly along to finish the game.

I figured out how to turn off the stupid podcasts. Can you turn of spiderman talking?

Started Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. It's good it reminds me of Dishonored. Still getting my head around it as I haven't figured out to read the notes and stuff you find properly yet due to not having spent that long playing the game. I'm in the Vatican at the minute.

Was browsing the PS store looking for deals and I saw Stellar Blade with a little "PS Premium" tag beside it. I thought it meant it was included in the game catalogue for when you subscribe to PS+ Premium but it's just a 2 hour trial when you subscribe 🙄.

Feels a little sneaky sticking the tag beside it. Not quite as stingy as Hogwarts Legacy offering a huge "0.75 hour trial" though.

Getting the hang of going through Journal. As I grabbed a letter and there were important things to solve a puzzle and I pressed the x button so he put it away before I read it properly. I had to go through all stuff I had to find it but it was worth it as I have the hang of it now. I love the puzzles I was on one to open a safe and everything was there to solve it I just had to get my head around it. I have it set so the game doesn't help me.

Finally giving Nine Sols some proper time after only playing through the first 30 mins previously (twice). It's sublime, as is to be expected from Red Candle Games (Detention, Devotion) - even if a 2D Sekiro-like Metroidvania is quite a departure for them.

Whereas the combat-heavy focus of PoP: The Lost Crown lost me as it just didn't feel quite tight enough IMO, here the parry-heavy combat is a wonderful, perfectly-honed thing - fighting a boss and getting into the rhythm of countering and dodging is a beautiful thing in motion. It looks stunning - some astonishing 2D animation, but the way it weaves in 3D elements, comic book narrative sequences, and vibrant colour direction is really something to behold. There's a great contrast between the cutesy character designs and the bleakness of the world they've created. And the cultural specificity of the Taiwanese details - from the music to the art design and story context - really gives it an extra edge too.

    Looking forward to playing more.

The snow sure is pretty. Shame I'm without electricity since last night so not being able to go to work has no positive side...

Was about to say similar ... 2/3/DS/XL + power banks. Much easier on power than ray traced global illumination and "AI" upscaling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,774 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

That'd all be well and good, except I'd only use them when there's no power, which is rare, so when I go to use them they'd need charging... I think I still have the nephews Switch, might have some juice left in it.

There was a inch of snow last night when I was going to bed and all that was left was a few patches here and there today where I am.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,774 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

We've had about 5-6", no power since last night, roads were white all day long, snow didn't let up. It only stopped a couple of hours ago, road is now slush and will probably be pure ice by the morning. Won't be going anywhere tomorrow either, not least because I'm probably stank at this stage with no shower...

Was sick for most of Christmas so I ended up getting the chance to start and finish Silent Hill 2 remake. The unremittingly dour atmosphere probably didn't mix well with feeling crappy and there are some sections that dragged a bit but in the main Bloober did a great job with the remake.

Ive gone back to play the PS3 launch title Resistance Fall of Man. Cloud streaming it on the PS5.

Despite looking pretty bad ( there is no Xbox style upscaling to help in that department) and the controls being a bit weird, there are some great levels in it.

That series is ripe for a complete remake though. I'd much rather that than the recent PS4 remasters.

What's the feeling on the rumoured Obvlion remake? It's the first ES game I played and got absolutely lost in it, one of my fondest gaming memories. I'd love to play it again on a modern engine.

But I understand the controversy and timing due to Skyblivion.

Oh man that gives me such a hit of nostalgia. I poured so many hours into that game, so damn good. It really is ripe for a remake, I'd love to see it. The multiplayer was so good too.

The PS3 launch titles were so good. Resistance, Motorstorm and Call of Duty 3 were such epic launch games. Add to that Warhawk which followed a few months later made for an amazing first year of PlayStation 3.

My Dad, who very sadly only passed away a couple of months ago, brought me back a PlayStation 3 from Hong Kong on launch when he was on holiday as it was really cheap there and him and a few friends got them for their kids. I'll never forget when he came back that he had the contents of the box everywhere in his suitcase (a controller cable in a sock, a controller in a shoe) to make sure to get it past customs. He was pulling cables and books for days after he came home. Ill always appreciate him picking it up for me. ❤️ That said I had years of a flipped X and [] button 😂 (Same man who got me a Commodore 64 when I was a kid so despite being somewhat tech illiterate, he knew what made me happy!)

I poured an ungodly amount of hours into Resistance at the start.

I went back to it recently when I decided to pick up the games I didn't get for the PS3. Thought it was a bad game at launch and it's even more dated now. Looks like a PS2 game but manages to run even worse with some awful performance issues. Level design feels very basic and the guns feel weedy. Think this deserved all the scorn it got at launch and more. At least the sequels are way better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,544 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

I absolutely loved resistance at launch but Motorstorm was by far my favourite. The graphics and physics were insane, the racing and soundtrack was so much fun. I would love a resistance trilogy remaster and the first 2 motorstorm games too. 4K 60fps on the ps5 although at this rate if it ever happens it'll be on ps6 too. Imagine those games at 4k 120fps on ps6.

I'm going to stream Resistance 3 through premium and go for the platinum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,374 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I remember getting my PS3 at a midnight launch and by the time I got home, set up and installed, it was 3am ish. I remember putting on resistance and being heart broken. It looked really bad. I played for about an hour before just switching it all off and went to bed.

But I did go back to it and by the end of the game I was converted.

Think I'll play through the trilogy. It's a series that does get better.

Then might try get through killzone . I played Shadow fall recently and that's still an amazingly good looking game that came so close to being a great game if the AI was a bit better.

Ive only played the first Killzone trilogy and the first game is a real stinker. I wasn't fond of the second game either. It looked great but the enemy variety was really bad and it had a lot of game design that felt like it was from 5 years earlier, particularly the awful boss design. Remove the graphics and it's not a good game. 3 didn't grab me but didn't play enough of that to really comment. I hear shadow fall at least has a good crysis style approach to combat.
