Yeah. Grouchy old man not happy that he can't make more money from rights etc. It's the same as it was then. Nobody's flogging off DVDs/streaming rights (yet). I'm sure it's a regular issue with attempting to book some bigger acts.

I'm sure there will be the usual rants from the usual haters. Ignorant of the facts. "Glastonbury's pivot to 'Woke' putting the final nail in the coffin". Blah blah blah. But famously Springsteen was hesitant to play and the likes of Fleetwood Mac looking for unrealistic demands have stopped them playing. Glasto is a big draw for the BBC and a highlight for people who cannot go. People get p*ssed when you have some acts like Young and The Stones limiting what can be broadcast.

As a fan, I say fair play to the Eaves' for sticking to their guns. They are after making some concessions (Allowing for some acts to sell their T-shirts). Especially for "legacy" acts, Glastonbury is a great opportunity to revitalise a career. With Robbie Williams being everywhere at the moment, I wouldn't be surprised if he turns up.

Yes, there is a certain amount of working with corporations but, apart from The Guardian, I wouldn't consider any of it being "Sponsorship". Yes, there are names beers and ciders but it's not like there is a "Tuborg Stage". There are no banners on the stages advertising anything other than charities.

It's not a "Not-for-profit" festival but it's not Cochella (Thankfully)

There are more than enough festivals for you, Neil. Slàn

Well the BBC. Vodafone are very much a sponsor. They had Orange and Budweiser at one point. I remember some shoddy "everyone smile for a picture for Orange" on the Pyramid one year.

    Edit: This one

    https://www.theguardian.com/media/pda/2010/jul/05/glastonbury-orange-photo

And the last couple of years theyve had this

But I doubt thats the reason for Neil pulling out.

And that is all totally understandable. But it's not like Glasto's requirements would be a surprise. EVERYONE knows many of the main acts are broadcast on BBC. EVERYONE knows they don't release/sell concert albums. Especially as he's already played. This would be the same as his last performance. This comes across as an attention grab.

This is a corporate sponsorship/partnership. It’s literally the same kinda stuff that 3 mobile etc get for 3 arena.
And media outlets broadcasting like the bbc are corporate partners same as Amazon prime or YouTube doing live streams for Coachella or other big festivals.

I just did. Your mental gymnastics to try pretend that they're not sponsors is irrelevant to me.

"they're there but they don't have advertising rights" - LOL ok pal.

Vodafone provide coverage for 220k festival-goers and staff. No advertising or sponsorship rights.

Land Rover provide vehicles for ferrying staff and artists about. No advertising or sponsorship rights.

Hunter have never had any deal with Glastonbury. You’ve made it up. It may have escaped your attention that Hunter went into administration in 2023 with losses of £112m.

Again I ask you to name the sponsors. There are none. No advertising. No branding. Not-for-profit with monies go lobbying groups and charities. You’ve never been. That’s clear or you’d have been away of the absence of corporations there.

Vodafone sponsor Glastonbury. Their branding was front and centre on the Glasto app this year. Can't miss it

There's a difference between partnership and sponsorship

Absolutely. It’s astonishing how the critics label it as both ‘woke’ and ‘corporate’ without understanding either.

And it remains not-for-profit. The monies go to national and local charities. Any cash the festival banks is for site investment for the following few years. They’ve turned down every brewery going, soft drinks companies, communications giants, Sky TV for coverage, etc. They ain’t there for a cash grab.

Vodafone replaced Three who replaced Orange. None have advertising rights but provide coverage for 220k people plus broadcast aid and recharging sites. You cannot do a festival without them. Same with the BBC when broadcasting. You surely understand what sponsorship is. They ain’t sponsors.

Same with beer. Sold on site but no advertising. Bars just marked as BAR, no names outside. Budweiser NEVER allowed to advertise, if they did ever sell there. Tuborg not there. It’s Brooklyn Pilsner. That displays how non-existent the branding is.
See also Mars bars and Walkers crisps that you can probably buy on site.

Land Rover provide vehicles for staff and artists. They cannot advertise.

None of these brands can put their names on stages, advertise on site or on other media. They’d love to link it on TV but they can’t.

Again please point to a corporate sponsor.

As I said since the last time he played in 2009 where he only allowed a short amount of bbc coverage. I think someone mentioned it was only 20 minutes or so. BBC now demands a substantial portion of pyramid headliner set for its broadcast.
A world of difference between 20 minutes and 60 minutes or 75 minutes.

I love when people describe it as "Suddenly" Woke. Suddenly? SUDDENLY? It was ALWAYS left leaning. ALWAYS what they would consider "Woke" (They have no definition). Not only was it always "Woke" even before there was a term. It is proud of the fact. Inclusivity is one of the cornerstones of Glasto. These people seem to think that organisers or attendees would be upset by the term. lol

Nope. Vodafone there to provide coverage for 220k people plus broadcast, aid the broadcast and provide re-charging venues for free. No sponsorship or advertising allowed. You’re aware that a 2025 festival and broadcasting won’t take place without a telecommunications company, aren’t you? Surely that’s obvious. But no branding allowed as is clear from TV coverage even if you’ve not been.

Vodafone run the official Glastonbury app and it’s called “ the official Glastonbury app presented by Vodafone”

It’s a corporate brand partnership. Vodafone use the Glastonbury name in promoting the app on their website and in media.
same as for Land Rover, these all corporate partnerships. Land Rover is not loaning these vehicles for a laugh it’s a corporate advertising exercise. They get the call themselves the official vehicle of glasto and promote that fact in the media etc.

trying to pretend that these are not corporate sponsors/partnership is delusion on your part.
If a football team has an official vehicle it’s the same thing. It’s a corporate partnership/sponsorship. Both parties get something out of it.

The BBC cannot demand. It can only negotiate. Massive Attack and Leonard Cohen chose not to be recorded.
Different figures for the NY broadcast in 2009, from 20-50 mins. Probably the latter as I think 5/6 tracks were shown and the final two (Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World & A Day in the Life were alone over 20 mins as extended versions played).

It’s all moot anyway. Neil has just gotten a bigger payday elsewhere (possibly Hyde Park?) and is using excuses to avoid any contractual liability.

    Anyway…..

It will be interesting to see who they get to Headline Saturday. There is no doubt that the last two or three Saturdays were simply enormous. Designed for amazing drone footage on TV. Almost trying to one-up eachother. Elton John and Coldplay footage looked simply amazing and really got people talking about Glasto. While there, my sister, watching at home, was Whatsapping be about the footage on TV. One would assume this is intentional and will (rightly or wrongly) continue. Personally, I don't like it as it does put a huge strain on the auld 50+ yearold bod :) Prefer the more balanced staging that is usually in place. Sure, there was mistakes with the likes of Avril Lavine and Sugerbabes (Sugerbabes especially. That was easy crowd to predict). But, after McCartney, Elton John, Coldplay, it seems they really are pushing for the stunningly photogenic 100K-at-the-Pyramid Saturday night. Most others, distributed as usual bar the occasional mistake but Saturday night? Yeah, that's their talking point. Their attention grabber.

I know it's TOTALLY unlikely and 99.99999% sure it ain't gonna happen. But it's the ONLY think that's making me think "Y'know….. it almost could be Oasis". The lads mouthing off with "You think THAT lot brought a crowd? Boll0x to 'em. Wait until you see what WE bring." There aren't many that would get that crowd. Obviously Taylor Swift but realistically? I can't think of many others.

    Edit: Typos

Any stage that has corporate branding?

And bar that has beer/drinks branding?

    Any advertising on site?

Any advertising off site - newspapers, TV, social media?

None. You understand what sponsorship is? You pay to get your name onto a stage or branded all over the site or media. You don’t even know what drinks firms operate there which entirely goes against your point. Branding would have ensured you were aware. They use Vodafone as they have to have a telecommunications company but they’re forbidden from advertising.

You’ve got to do better. Name a corporate sponsor. If you’ve been you’ll be aware that there’s no trace of any.

Please point out the advertising they have on site, on TV, in newspapers. They’re not allowed to advertise it at Pilton nor on national media. They’re do it on their own social media pages. Football is not comparable as these brands are all over shirts, stadia and anything tied into the individual club.
Where do you see that with the Glasto announcements or at the festival? What names do you see on TV? Where is the branding? Nowhere. It ain’t allowed.

As I’ve said before you should finally go. It’ll disabuse you of many of the misconceptions you have about the festival.

    Anyway, childcare duties. Responses later.

They literally advertise it on their own website. Which Ive posted. They are corporations paying money to sponsor the festival.

Definition. Sponsorship is a cash and/or in-kind fee paid to a property (typically in sports, arts, entertainment or causes) in return for access to the exploitable commercial potential associated with that property.

    Or:

something (or someone) is the act of supporting an event, activity, person, or organization financially or through the provision of products or services. The individual or group that provides the support, similar to a benefactor, is known as the sponsor

How many corporate "win tickets to Glastonbury" competitions are there these days? You think theyre doing it for free?

Ive no issue with it really. As you say, its needed to run the place. But they do have corporate sponsors. Which is different to branding.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,408 ✭✭✭crl84

    Ah, shifting goalposts yet again.

So it's only sponsorship if a stage is specifically sponsored with naming rights.
Or the bars have big signs with the manufacturer's logo.
Or big billboards up with advertising.

You clearly don't know what sponsorship actually is. Glastonbury has several corporate sponsorship deals every year, as already pointed out here multiple times. Just because they're not traditional obtrusive sponsorship advertising methods doesn't make them any less of a sponsorship.

    https://www.carlsberggroup.com/newsroom/brooklyn-pilsner-announced-as-the-official-beer-of-glastonbury-festival/

"Drinks purchased at the Festival will be served in co-branded Brooklyn Pilsner cups featuring the iconic logo, doodles, and unmistakeable bright yellow livery - set to be a symbol of festivals this year."

    crop-brooklyn.jpg

I guess a deal to be an "official beer" isn't ACTUALLY sponsorship.
And having your logo on all the pints coming out of the main bars isn't ACTUALLY sponsorship. Herp de derp de derp.

They must be putting magic mushies into that because no one has ever been that happy drinking Tuborg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,716 ✭✭✭TheIrishGrover

I don't drink shorts so typically bring wine. But, by God, by Saturday evening, you'd kill for a cold beer…. Even Tuborg. lol

    • Cos you are a grumpy oul fexker who has been fighting "the good fight " all your life and now don't know how to compromise ?

I love Neil but he can be annoyingly, unnecessarily confrontational .

Just stfu Neil for once in your life and give us one last televised concert 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,716 ✭✭✭TheIrishGrover

Well, personally I could do without another 15 min version of "Rockin' in the free world"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,776 ✭✭✭✭The Nal

One of the best things I've ever seen at the farm. We were horse screaming "ONE MORE" for another chorus. While laughing hysterically.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,716 ✭✭✭TheIrishGrover

Then you MUST have been on the Tuborg after 5th or 6th circuit…. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,363 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

That last concert in the RDS with Crazy Horse just about did for me and have been a fan for night on 48 years !

He owes us a cleverly edited set ;)

Sometimes there is a lot to be said for a limited timeslot. Saw Foo Fighters there when they headlined Pyramid. Was fun etc but then they came out a couple of years ago. In the pit for them. Middle of day. 50 mins. Banged out the tracks and gone. Fantastic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,776 ✭✭✭✭The Nal

Depends on the act. The Foos have about 15 minutes of tunes for me. They had to do a few covers to keep it interesting at their Glasto headline set.

Neiler has countless hours of bangers.

But yes, broadly agree. Sometimes less is more.

He has indeed hours of back catalogue . But when so many tunes are riffed into 20 minute odysseys it can get just a little bit tiresome.

Hey I see you agree 😁
