Finally got a go of astrobot. It really does steal Mario galaxies lunch in a lot of ways but that's no bad thing. Learn from the best and produce something that is the closest anyone has gotten to it. Really hoping it comes to PC. Not all that found of the bot homages, they kind of feel like bad cameos but it's totally forgiveable when the game uses the nostalgia to create some great gameplay sequences. Well deserved game of the year contender and the type of game I used to buy a PlayStation for.

Just bought the Soul Reaver remasters. Had a quick look at a comparison video and my rose tinted glasses were firmly on as I remember it looking like the remaster looks... so there may be hope that I'll like them.

However, bad start. There's no game specific music when you go to the game on the XMB, where it should be playing Ozar Midrashim. I am disappoint.

Me and some friends are looking for a PvE crossplay game to play. Not into the pvp anymore so looking for a more coop style game that would work with PS5 and Xbox series. Would help if any suggestions are on either gamepass or ps+ but not a deal breaker

Just rolled the credits on Soul Reaver 1, and while it brought back the great memories of playing it back in the day, it felt like a low effort attempt. They really did just upgrade the character models and textures and slap them on top. It definitely lost some of its darker feel, but I can't fault them for bringing the models up to the level of the box art for SR2. But not perfect. Kain eyes are weird for one. I feel like they could have done more overall.

The background textures were minimally upgraded. They're still flat surfaces, the gates are still a pixel deep, and the ability to switch between original and remastered can show the low level effort off more. There's bo visible improvement to lighting, aside from the Reaver itself, but on my C2 it made dark areas hard to navigate as the glow from the Reaver was too bright. Add in zero attempt to improve the movement, certain cathedral sections and the boss fight remain frustrating due to the poor by modern standards camera and platforming.

I watched a good video last night where it shows why some modern AAA games look worse than 10 years ago, and it's due to higher quality graphics mixed into lower quality ones. Characters, effects, RT, nano particles, etc all added to the main focus, while backgrounds and textures don't get the same treatment and it's jarring. It's why the end PS4 era looked amazing, because it was the best of what was available across the board, whereas now main characters get all the glam and everything else is of lesser quality. While not to the same degree, its very obvious in SR due to the 3d modelled main character, lower quality 3d modelled secondary characters and flat backgrounds/surfaces.

I still enjoyed it, it is still one of my favourite games, albeit the rose tinted glasses remember it even better than this remaster. It's a missed opportunity imo. A Resident Evil type remake would have been amazing, but Embracer are just trying to cash in. I can't imagine the work on this was too hard or taxing, and didn't take too long. Shame.

I can't see it winning over any new fans because it just can't compare. Everything it did that was amazing at the time has obviously been surpassed since. The story at the time was leagues ahead of most games out then. The shifting was unique but anyone who has played Guacamelee has experienced a better version of it.

Still looking forward to playing 2, just to experience the story again mainly. And I'm holding hope some mad man will do the extra work on pc via mods and I can come back to it in a few years and play something that looks better. Tis tough when they remaster a favourite, my expectations were definitely too high but I expected more than this. Can't let my personal love of the series overlook the low level effort here. I've not played other low level effort games for the same reason (GTA trilogy).

Really want to win the lotto now so I can dedicate my life to learning how to remake this in Unreal and do it myself! Or pay someone to do it.

The problem here is you are looking for a remake not a remaster. It was never sold as a remake. I thought the team did an amazing job with Tomb Raider but there's only so much you can do. You can change the lighting, update textures and add some post processing effects but once you start changing the geometry, that's when you start changing physics and gameplay as well as the engine and you might as well be making a new game from scratch. If you want to keep the game feeling the same way you have can't change that. As for the camera, that's usually very difficult to change as well since cameras work very differently from how they do now and a lot of the time the camera is disguising polygon culling processes to get the game running well.

I see the remaster has good reviews but exceptional user reviews. I feel a lot of the issues are down to the base game just not being as good as they remember it. I played it recently and there's an awful lot of block pushing puzzles.

As for the PS4 still looking good, that will change. No console generation looks worse than the previous one. And while the PS4 is last gen I don't feel the PS5 has been a significant increase in fidelity like previous generations so it kind of feels like the same gen. When we get a significant increase in generational performance, PS4 will look as ugly as the PS3 does now, I find the games from that gen have a weird matter plastic look to them. And then we will start looking back on it fondly once we hate the following generation.

Yup, boards sending me back in time when I go to a thread. Maybe it's ok on desktop, but on mobile, FFS.

Strange choice for number 1. I mean it's a great game but not getting near my top 20 this year and honestly, what I played of astrobot is way better.

I do think they could have pushed the remaster a bit further in terms of a lot of the character models, even if it's just in cutscenes. Seeing straight through Kain's skull because of the huge gap between his cheek and hair is jarring these days. But agree that this was never going to be more than a bit of a polish and shine. The big hope would be that it generates enough interest for some type of resurgence for the franchise.

I do wonder if there’s a hint of recency bias there. I’m just in the final act of the game now, and while I’ve throughly enjoyed it, it definitely has pacing issues and would’ve been even better had it been edited down (maybe two hubs instead of three) and some of the filler stuff removed. Also indulges in some more cliched AAA video game stuff in the third hub (overlong dream sequences, GoW style boat exploration). Not my GOTY anyway, but hardly an egregious pick either. Would definitely easily recommend it.

Just finished 2nd play through of Cyberpunk (this one was on patch 2.1 and included Phantom Liberty expansion). Fan **** tastic, cave recommend it enough. Feels like a different game to my first playthrough at launch and the expansion is just incredible. 35 quid for ultimate edition on amazon at the moment, complete bargain if anyone hasn't tried it yet or wants to go back.

There's still something about Night City though that feels a bit dead compared to other open world cities, hopefully they can fix that in the sequel.

On the final final boss battle in Prince of Persia, The Lost Crown, and it's 3 ******* stages.

Oh I agree, I said as much that I wanted a remake not a remaster. I knew that coming in. I don't agree with these low level effort remasters in general, and the only reason I pulled the trigger on these is because they're 2 of my favourite games ever. I just don't see the point of what they did. It didn't improve it enough visually to justify the reason, and nothing else was improved. And due to the low level effort, its not going to generate enough new interest to possibly head towards a full remake (with original voice acting!!!). Its a quick cash grab, basically what I was expecting. It could have done without tbh.

I'll still play and finish the second one, and maybe even got for the plat on them, but that's due to my love of the games in general, not these remasters. 2 was a big step up from 1, and I don't think we'll get the same impact on this remaster. Shall wait and see if they've messed up any other character models other than Kain. And that's another issue, the same level of upgrading to Raziel is not across the board. The enemies didn't get the same treatment, just a basic upgrade. I don't see any further games in the series being remastered, and I doubt there'll be any new ones. Hopefully Embracer sell off Crystal Dynamics or the LoK licence and someone else can do a proper job on it.

I actually just downloaded Cyberpunk again and am planning on giving it a 3rd and final try, now that it's been patched/updated to the level it has. Going to do some investigation regarding best builds to play (think I'm just going to go full kill-bot sword arm ninja stuff rather than trying to do any of the hacking/stealth stuff, which I found kind of tedious previously.

I think what grates the most for me is calling it lazy when I know how much work goes into making a remaster like this. It's far from lazy, if you want lazy you should look at the state they put GTA out in initially or kingpin. You might not appreciate it but they did some exceptional work here for a small team. It takes an awful lot of work to make changes to an old game engine they they probably don't have the source code to, boost the frame rate and then have the old game and engine sync and run in the background. That's a real feat of engineering and preservation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,775 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Then it seems wasted because for all that effort, the result is not that impressive. Having the ability to switch instantly to the original highlights the issues more. I'm not taking away from the work they did, I've no idea the level involved in doing something like this, but if that's the best that can be done, again I'd question why bother. Why send out a survey before working on it and then give this as a result...

I'm only taking it extra bad because I love the games. I knew the GTA trilogy was a pile of shyte, and it's even worse considering the owners of them and the vast wealth they have accumulated by doing very little (in comparison to years gone by). But I'd still consider updating some models and textures lazy overall. Bare minimum work tbh. Haven't played the TR games, but if they're basically the same deal, og games with just texture/model updates, then I'll probably feel the same about them.

No disrespect to Aspyr, they did what they were paid to do and probably did a good job at what they did, but to me the end user who has only positive memories of the SR games, it fell completely flat (literally, everything but the character models are still flat). And it's not perfect, I've had the entire scene turn black after going through a door, could see the world through the other side of the door. This happened a few times. Have to retrace your steps until it pops back and then continue on. Kains eyes are terrible and you can see through his head. Clipping is still everywhere and often can see through the environment. Obvious lines where textures join. Literally no improvement to the portal graphics (switching to og and back there is zero difference)...

Each to their own, but this is a fail for me. All it does is highlight how old and poor it is in comparison to modern gaming. Deserved so much more.

Anyway, my disc drive and Black Myth Wukong arrived today, and I'm off for 2 days, so I'll be taking a small break before hopping off 2.

How the f is Dragon Age: Veilguard so high🤣 I say that as someone who enjoyed it too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,555 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

If you are enjoying it a bit into chapter 2, i highly recommend Phantom Liberty. That can be started near the start of chapter 2 but i jumped in before starting the final mission. I planned to so it earlier but was having so much fun with the main game, i kept putting it off. Went with katana/ninja build and had great fun when it was sneaking around or going all out slashing up 1 person to the next.

Strangley, after just playing a game with Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves, I'm just out of the cinema seeing (hearing) the 2 in Sonic 3 and reminded me Idris wants to do a Cyberpunk film with Keanu. A Phantom Liberty film could be brilliant.

Got Resident Evil 2 and 3 PS4 (with digital PS5 upgrade) remakes. They are 10.20 stg on Amazon at the moment. Couple more disks for the backlog. 🙄 Have RE 4 remake. Not sure if they need to be played in any order. Would probably prefer to start with 4 since that's the best game AFAIK.

There are physical PS5 versions coming out but I'll deal with the double install shenanigans on PS instead of paying full price for those.

It's really strange on PS5 with a physical disk you need the disk, the PS4 version installed and the PS5 version installed to play the PS5 version of the game. It was much more seamless on XBox Series X when I had that.

RE4 was the best game but imo since the remakes have come out 2 is the cream of the crop, then re1 then 4 then 3.

The made thing about 3 is of all of them as it doesnt overstay its welcome and can be done in a day session or over 2 days its the one I have replayed most.

Quite enjoying Spiderman despite it being the most Ubisoft of Ubisoft monogames. I guess the difference is that movement through the open world is so fan that it isn't just something that gets in the way between missions and visiting familiar sights in New York is aot of fun.

My one announce is the Arkham combat. The game even steals the Arkham stealth from that series, something I think that game does really well and wish there was more in this game. Arkham combat just kind of sucks when you play a lot of character action games. It gives the illusion of being free flowing but it's just annoying having to take on specific enemies with specific moves. It never feels natural and it's just infuriating when you are in mod combo and have to change things up because a fat block decides to break your combo. It's not as bad as ghost of tsushima where you have to change stances to suit the weapon or shield of an enemy or anti fat bloke but it still annoys me.

I'd play 2 & 3 back to back as they are set on the same night and shorter. You'll enjoy the change of pace for 4 then rather than doing it the other way around. But all three are great.
