It's a tough project that has the team buying countless Japanese mobile phones hoping there's some data on them they can use. The game was massive but storage on phones back then was at a premium so all the content was streamed per chapter. It's a case of trying to find the content from each chapter.

Not sure how much of it I'll ever play, or when, but f*ck it, it was cheap and I need to start playing something on this PC to justify me upgrading the graphics card.

A little late to the game as it’s been a big cult hit but played Mouthwashing over the past two nights (would’ve done it in one but my Steam Deck battery ran out and I was on the move :p).

Definitely one of the strongest narrative games I’ve played in a while. Formally it’s a proper delight - uses so many cool editing and cross-cutting techniques to really disorientate the player and capture multiple perspectives. Incredible pacing throughout as a result, outside one or two short, slightly annoying short stealth section.

Fantastic visual design too - some strong Evangelion hints to some of its use of text and screens. The story has absurd elements but goes in some very bleak directions as it goes along.

Won’t say too much as it’s best to play it blind, but another great example of how game stories can really benefit from short runtimes and actual editing & pacing.

Me and Retro, that is. Few missions in, it's good fun.

Any gems released this year (that can be played on PS) that you can recommend? Looking for my next Return of the Obra Dinn indie diamond.

Just make sure to play it with advanced controls. Takes a little getting used to but also makes the game way more fun.

Have to say that I'm really enjoying Robocop Rogue City on PlayStation 5. A really fun AA game where you actually feel like the protagonist you're meant to be controlling. It's a really funny game too with 80s humour and satire that reminded me of older GTA games with some of its deadpan dialogue and it's awesome to have Peter Weller (who played Robocop) voice the game. Shooting is fun and gorey much like it's source. The story (so far) is interesting. Good rpg-lite elements to it and there's plenty of interesting side missions too if you're bothered.

It is a bit glitchy here and there and the pacing can be a bit uneven at times but it doesn't take away from what is the epitome of a really fun game (if you like/d Robocop).

Got it for under €20 in the last PS sale and it feels like a steal.

A surprising amount of my favourites this year are either PC or Switch only. But on PS5…

Everyone should at least try Balatro.

Need more time with Nine Sols but from a sampler it’s a fascinating 2D take on Sekiro-style combat and beautifully bleak storytelling.

Penny’s Big Breakaway is a really fun throwback 3D platformer with really cool movement.

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes I adored, but it won’t be for everyone so a caveat that not everyone will fall for its puzzles box design and narrative.

Rise of the Golden Idol scratches part of that Obra Dinn itch.

Thank Goodness You’re Here is a comedic delight.

A lot of the others - Arco, Tactical Breach Wizards, UFO 50, 1000x Resist, Hades 2, Arctic Eggs, Mouthwashing, Anthology of the Killer etc… - haven’t made their way over yet alas, and a few probably won’t.

I wouldn't mind giving this a go but I watched the review/trailer on YouTube and the cringey dialog just totally put me off.

Don't mind the dialogue, the game is an absolute blast to play. Story is the least important part of most games and in this game all it needs to do is take you from set piece to set piece.

It is a bit disappointing if you played previous ace combat games because those actually do have great stories.

I know we're talking PS5 but Curse of the Golden Idol and Rise of the Golden Idol are also free with Netflix and are great to play on a tablet.

On the subject of Hitman again, is there any benefit to playing on PC vs PS2? What was it originally developed for?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,783 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Looks and runs better on PC and you've keyboard and mouse but apparently the it's still very good on console.

I'm all for the introduction of more football games. Something incredibly boring about the the annual EAFC and whatever PES is called now.

Yeah I loved my recent play through tbf to Teyon they really did their best to nail the vibe on this and the terminator game.

There's just no competing with EA money and they are so ubiquitous now that people feel they need to get the new EA football game so they can play with their friends.

What annoys me the most is just how awful FIFA and EA FC are as games. They're just not fun to play. Now I'm not sports game fan but I could get some enjoyment out of sensible soccer, ISS or the early pro evos. The EA model is just so po faced. It's like it's trying to be a simulation but also managing to be nothing like a proper game of football.

Just got a beta invite for a sports game i applied for nearly a year and a half ago, completely gave up on it, very pleasant surprise and i have until early access release next year. Having a wheely good time with it, can't see myself getting board anytime soon.

The first episode of "It's In The Game: Madden NFL" on Prime Video is interesting. Shows how EA cornered the market with some dirty dealings involving SEGA. Also apparently shows how a failed console linked to the EA founder led to Sony pushing forward with PlayStation.

The other 3 episodes are just ok. Basically EA promo but that 1st ep is worth a watch.

Man, a failed console by a EA founder. People talking like the 3DO was obscure. I feel old.

The EA, Sega relationship is interesting and was pretty much what cause the Megadrive to start selling really well in the US, Madden was a massive game on Apple. They continued to support them but poor sales on the mega CD, 32X and Saturn saw EA not support the Dreamcast and despite the DC have far superior NBA, NHL and American football games in the 2K series, the EA name was just too big and they supported the PS2.

Im in my 40s but have to admit I did not know about the 3DO. I was busy on my Olivetti 286 playing Ports Of Call and Commander Keen until I got a PlayStation.

In the Prime series they show how Joe Montana got a bum deal. Dont want to give much more away in case people want to watch. The early politics is interesting. After that it touches briefly on how the 2k games were better than EA offerings but EA being the only show in town with player names lead to no competition. Its an EA love in from then on.

So they've finally released a gameplay trailer for the Exodus game itself.

Given that Archetype Entertainment is spearheaded by some former BioWare vets, it shouldn't be a surprise that the game is being aimed squarely at Mass Effect fans. CohhCarnage hosted a developer livestream during which some more gameplay details were revealed. As you'd expect, choice-based dialogue and decisions will (allegedly) affect the story, there'll be technological artefacts to find etc etc. But another potentially interesting mechanic is that some of your choices might result in Interstellar-style time dilations, affecting storyline, locations, companions etc. Could be interesting, or could be gimmicky as feck. They've released a load of videos detailing concept art, creature design etc as well, some of which are narrated by Matthew McConaughey. Hopefully they haven't blown the full budget on that!

I started black myth wukong as there is a 2 hour trial on ps+.

That opening sequence is weird. It should be epic but thanks to the monkey's accent and the dubbing being a bit off. I can't stop seeing power rangers. 😂

Saw Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut on sale and bought it. Only played the original on PS4 where I think it was only 30FPS.

Such a big difference with 60FPS. It doesn't reinvent anything in terms of open world games but it's gorgeous and satisfying to play.

Out in town this evening (Limerick), having a Christmas stroll around with the kids and came across this cool window display where people can loan the shop their retro toys simply to show kids what the oldies looked forward to at Christmas. Man, just being that close to a NES again had memories flooding back, damn what a time to be a gamer in those days.
