In all honesty, what's going to change?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,203 ✭✭✭drury..

Presumably the impact of this is minimal

Martin etc are aware they we need diplomatic relations their end , we didn't throw the baby out of the bath , merely took a stand on our Palestinian friends being slaughtered and recognition of a Palestinian state has some significance

Anything goes wrong with our soldiers over there we want those channels available

Diplomats are in the business of constructive engagement and problem solving

Primarily because Israel is a major power in the world, recognised by almost every other country and is unnecessarily killing civilians.

It's simple, even if a hospital contains terrorists, you don't bomb it. Even if a school has terrorists, you don't bomb it. Yes it's more difficult to get the terrorists but that's the way it should be and "war crimes" is the only way to describe what has been going on.

They have gone about eradicating hamas with zero consideration for civilian life. Their actions both before and now have shown that they don't consider Palestine anything other than an area that should be occupied by Israel and the lives of the people that live there have no value.

Most other conflicts around the world don't involve any major power so obviously doesn't evoke the same level of compassion and doesn't result in the same number of lives lost.

Let's say Israel is successful, removed hamas and occupies Palestine entirely at the cost of potentially 100k civilian lives. Are we supposed to just accept Israel's actions without any questions?

The Palestinians are not our friends, they don't share any of our values.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,802 ✭✭✭✭Grayson

That's literal whatabouttery. You could argue the people should be more active about other conflicts, but that doesn't mean that people shouldn't be active regarding this.

We have a long history of supporting the Palestinian cause. This isn't something that's just happened in the last two years. And that can happen everywhere. people in the US were more aware of the IRA than they were of say the Shining path in Peru. This is due to cultural ties between Ireland and the US as opposed to ties with Peru.

Plus I'd say that when Israel and it's supporters are calling us raging antisemites, it's getting personal for Irish people.

We have a special connection with Palestine

When you say they ? Do you mean all or some or what

Sure you can say the Catholics who voted sinn fein ira don't share our values

"They and values" are open to massive interpretation and question

Oh right - so feck the innocent people being slaughtered by the Israeli government

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,301 ✭✭✭✭ted1

I've Palestinians friends, we share many values. one of them is genocide is wrong.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 42,987 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

When did you ask them on their values?

Such ignorant nonsense being posted simply because they are predominantly muslim

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,594 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Why are their lives more important than the people of Yemen. Where were all the flag waivers on that one

We can send them thoughts and prayers … and more virtue signalling … like we are doing

After all we don’t even have airplanes in our defence forces to send aid

We can’t even get the EU to agree on a unified response

He has a point tho, the only thing we have in common is that we were both oppressed but culturally they may as well be on another planet with things like female genital mutilation and throwing gays out of tall buildings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42,511 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

    Epic strop. Good riddance.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 42,987 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

So your point is that we should just do nothing?

I think Ireland has done more than virtue signal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,109 ✭✭✭✭Ash.J.Williams

Irish Americans, or Americans as they are known nowadays have more contact with Israel than Ireland, apart from the competitive gaa of course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭j62

my point is that we can’t do anything because we don’t spend anything on defence and Europe is divided, and UN is a **** joke, we barely manage a tiny mission with UN to border with Lebanon

we should have bought planes for our defence forces to at least be able deliver aid to here and other countries

So we just endup with empty virtue signalling

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,594 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Well how are women and gays treated In Palestine? They no more share our values than Saudi Arabia or Iran do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭j62

Can you list exactly what Ireland has done to help Palestine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,594 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Thing is I don't want to support Israel either, my position is Ireland should remain neutral and say nothing in either direction. It has zero benefits to us getting into diplomatic spats over this. I wouldn't be happy for our government to be making statements about Syria, Sudan or anywhere else.

That's almost always a wise guiding principle but Israel is the exception, American corporations are dominated by Israel first advocates, now I realize I'll be accused of peddling a trope but even those staunch defenders of Israeli aggression in Ireland have leaped to warn of the economic retaliation we have now in store for us

They would not say this if they themselves didn't believe corporate America isn't dominated by Israel first

    It absolutely is

    We spoke out

    Words have meaning

Recognition of a Palestinian state has significance

Israel doesn't listen to us but we did the right thing and called them out

The current developments are a hissy fit in retaliation for Ireland joining the upcoming ICJ case.

Ireland has indicated it simply wants the definition of "genocide" to be updated. The same definition will apply to both Israelis and Palestinians

(It has also indicated it wants to join another upcoming case about Myanmar, but there doesn't seem to be the same outrage from the usual suspects …. funnily enough …. given Myanmar is even further away)

" Democracy" is as much a sham label as the likes of BMW cloaking themselves in the LGBTQ flag (though not outside the west of course), Britain, France , USA, none give a fig about democracy if it doesn't suit them

    Wake up FFS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,436 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Thank God British and American attitudes from 1940-1945 weren't simply considered anti-German.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,594 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Why are we joining any case, South Africa are heavily supporting Putin, they certainly aren't a friend to us.

The only madder human alive than Eoghan Harris is Professor Humphrys over in DCU

A failsafe rule of thumb is If Harris thinks something is wrong, you know it's a correct and proper decision

I am sure those living in rubble created by IDF are delighted them Irish “spoke out” while they try to find food and water

If we are gonna drop our neutrality and “speak out” more often we should at least then try to spend more on defence forces who could have helped

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,200 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

This is embarrassing. We are saying Israel does not meet the definition of 'genocide' so we want it expanded. We look stupid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,203 ✭✭✭drury..

What's your point on friends ? , seems an irrelevance

UK/US disregard or don't recognize anything that doesn't suit them anyway

What's right is what suit thems to be right at a given time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,617 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

We did take the same stance against Russia. Which is why the Russian ambassador has been so critical of the Irish Government. I know you are keen to portray it all as a witchhunt to defend Israel, but don't omit important details to suits your pro Israel narrative . The Irish government are right to speak out about war crimes. The problem for you and other apologists is you would prefer if that didn't include Israel.

Only area I differ with those folks on this issue is I'm pleased that if Zionist power in America ( which has never been so powerful) decides to try and ruin us, it will put a halt to mass immigration, I view zionist supremacy as the biggest global threat right now and believe it will have to be taken on at some stage, I don't believe in acquiescing to zionist supremacy and power as it cares not a jot for Ireland whether we are rich or less rich

There is always an upside to everything and if zionist power attacks us ,we will survive and maintain our dignity, they can take their corporations but not that
