Will ya let us know if you get a price for installation

Most proper installers say an isolation switch needs to be fitted close to the charger as per Irish regulations. Sometimes it's bigger than the charger itself. You might be able to insist on black, white, grey to minimise the visual impact.

Got the ev sync installed today. Very neat job. The unit itself is smaller than I thought too. So far, so good.

    Any recommendations for Waterford?

I think Fokearn cover the whole country.

Think so. There are no buttons on it etc. But look above on setting up a rule on it so you could connect to it, set the rule up but I don't know if it will kick off if the unit isn't connected to broadband

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭godzillaess

Have it set up as plug and play.. You can go into the Sync Energy app and set it up that way.. Or set it up to work with app/broadband. Also some other useful settings there like lowering the brightness on the Led light on the front of the unit.

Do you have to disable wi-fi in the house and use Bluetooth to connect to the unit with that app? I read you had to on the older app.

Nigel Daly is the most experienced installer nationwide and is based in Tramore so after service should be good. He has a nationwide team. Prices tend to be on the high side so haggle and compare to folkarm. It's good piece of mind to have an experienced installer as some are terrible and don't help set up apps, load sensing, check tails, etc correctly. Nigel Daly alone installed all the original free ESB home chargers back in the day of the first EVs in Ireland. Outside of Waterford he might contract it out, I am not sure how he runs his nationwide service.

Just today I got a new version of the Sync Energy App on the phone. Now it has Home user or Installer user, where before it only had Installer. From reading the release notes of the Sync Energy app, it's replacing the Monta app for all Sync Energy branded Chargers. Mine is BG SyncEV branded, so still has to use the Monta app.

So basically there are two home user apps, Sync Energy for new units and Monta for older units manufactured before Aug 2024.

The installers app was recently changed to use the Sync Energy app (before it had home user added) and it uses Bluetooth to connect to the charger. But if the charger is already configured to use wifi, then as far as I can tell, you need to turn off or disable the wifi in your house, and the charger will then switch to using Bluetooth. You can then discover and connect using the app. In the app is where you can change the LED brightness, the wifi network and check that the incoming CT load sensor clamp is connected, installed the right way around and has the correct Amp rate for your fuse/wiring.

I haven't done this, but might as the LED is annoyingly bright.

Moving house shortly. Have an untethered EO Mini pro 2 in current house and it's been perfect for the last year. In the new house I'm thinking I might go for a tethered zappi because there is a side passage. Our current house only has a small driveway so tethered would've looked awful. I want a solar compatible charger this time as will be getting solar panels put in asap on the south facing roof.

Anyeay my question is what is the best way to future proof for if FIT is reduced so low that it makes more financial sense to use solar panels to charge the car? Is it just a matter getting electrician out to connect solar panels up to the charger

You'd be better off buying battery storage, getting an EV plan and charging both car and battery using the super cheap rate. Solar excess could be stored in the battery and run the house off it in the evening, then a fully charged battery could cover the breakfast until the sun comes up.

They are in the Sync Energy app.. Not the Monta app. You connect via Bluetooth.. Its the app the installer uses to set it up initially.

Charging car from solar would realistically require massive amount of solar and your roof may not be big enough. Even with say 12kW of solar you may struggle to get 28kWh from 10am-2pm or 130km of range, and that's in peak summer.

Ideally you want solar installed at same time as charger and extra CT for solar panels. A standard zappi install with one CT clamp will work fine charging car from excess but a second ct clamp on solar will allow you to display solar vs house vs car all in one app. If you get an eddi for hot water (again makes no financial sense if you get paid more to export), then you can heat hot water with excess when car is full or not there daytime in summer.

Personally I would just bring the old charger and get a zappi if it breaks in 5 years. Zappis seem to have limited life anyway.

Funnily enough I asked on a facebook EV group would it be normal to take a EV charger with me when moving house and I got ridiculed. That's fair enough I think because I did get to avail of €600 grant which our house buyers would be missing out on if they wanted to get a charger installed

The cost of removing it, making the junction safe.

Then getting it installed in the new house.

Would it be cheaper than €699 total?

You could remove the charger itself but leave an outdoor socket in its place and leave a copy of the paperwork that shows its been wired for an EV charger. Then the new owners can simply buy a charger and connect it up. Not the end of the world there, and they may still get the Grant of €300.

You might ask about this over on the "property forum" ( what ever its called now … )

    But….

I suspect that house buyers expect to buy whatever is fixed to the house….this would include things like cooker, MHRV unit, heating system and IMOH a car charger if it is attached to the house. If it is loose and not attached to the house then it is not by default part of the house.

If anyone is looking for a charger, I have an EV6 due in January and it comes with a charger install from Energia. I already have a Zappi and Kia said I can install it elsewhere so I’m tempted to put it up on adverts. They are offering Ohme, Zappi, or EO:

Will that plan suit your house usage, forgive my cynicism but there's no such thing as a free cp.

I’m sure it’s subsidised by Kia to sell cars. I’m on the Energia Smart EV plan and I can charge for 4 hours at night for 6.9c/kWh, so it absolutely fits my needs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,244 ✭✭✭MBSnr

The charger install is dependent on you becoming a Energia customer and someone comes out to fit it. I didn't take the offer as I didn't want to move to Energia or a Smart meter plan, nor did I want to wait weeks until the installers are in your area.

Are you sure Energia will just give you the unit…? I doubt that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,128 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

I'd certainly be interested. As mentioned above I don't think I'm going to take my charger with me when I move, feels far too mean and I want to get tethered this time anyway 😅

I am an Energia customer and that’s what I’m paying.

Had my charger fitted last Friday. Based on recommendations in this thread, I went with Fokearn and got the BG Sync. Have to say I found Fokearn very easy to deal with and very helpful when it came to choosing a charger to suit my needs. The installers arrived on time and left the place nice and tidy. Grant money was paid into my account yesterday. All I need is the car now 😁

Looks tidy, I thought he would have brought the power to the underneath of the isolator beside where he went out to the CP. Is the cable run inside going through the attic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,244 ✭✭✭MBSnr

Did the same with mine. Straight in at the top. I do wonder how it'll stand up to the elements….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,315 ✭✭✭zg3409

Best practice is to only connect at the bottom but that isolator may not have room for 2 connections at the bottom. In theory those glands are waterproof and it should not matter It might not look as nice either if the feed is from above having 2 right turns

I got it nice and neat on the outside but a wee bit ugly inside!
