It looks like James Joyce has been moved to the Rosslare to Pembroke - currently sitting in Rosslare after doing one crossing already. Isle of Inisfree sitting off Rosslare. Ulysses on route to Cherbourg. W.B.Yeats sitting in Dublin. Stena Estrid on the way back from Liverpool and Stena Adventurer sitting off Dublin after making a trip to Holyhead earlier in the day.

Edit, I should say an unsuccessful attempted crossing to Holyhead.

Am I correct in remembering the W.B.Yeats a Rosslare route in the past?

It looks like Stena Adventurer is on the way to Fishguard again and Irish Ferries Isle of Inisfree is docked in Rosslare again. Irish Ferries James Joyce is on route to Pembroke. Let's see what happens overnight. Looks like I have to make the stupid cross country run to Rosslare again. Oh joy....

Adventurer only went to Holyhead to perform a crew change.

When in Holyhead she berthed on the aluminium jetty (which is not suitable for Ro-Ro).

Would be fine except the booking is for Irish Ferries this time ☹️

Holyhead port has always suffered from a lack of investment together with a mend and do approach to berthing facilities. Look at the marina that was completely wiped out a few years ago in a similar storm.

When the dust settles, it will be interesting to see how Stena move forward with sharing their harbour with IF. The pier will inevitably have to be redesigned/rebuilt/re-engineered and Stena won't be keen to give up their freight service so easily. If only one berth remains in active use will IF be turfed out in favour of Stena's own ships? Those of us that are old enough will remember the dramatic scenes outside Dun Laoghaire harbour when B&I tried to blockade Sealink ferries from using the harbour.

This incident could have long term ramifications for ferry transport on the central Irish Sea corridor.

I'm pretty sure there's a court case requiring Stena to let IF in on equal terms.

You can cancel surely if your scheduled route is unavailable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 672 ✭✭✭Not made with hands

That one berth must be on its last legs too though.

    So ultimately big investment required.

Maybe the Irish government can buy a shareholding of it.

Same as we had a terminal in Heathrow / landing slots once AFAIK.

The U normally goes to drydock in January so a criss cross of smaller boats and ports should keep the show on the road until the spring.

There are access rules for ports now preventing companies from locking out competition.

Earlier this week when they thought that T5 could reopen times were given for both operators to share it by staggering their times, it is very likely this will be the short term solution if it is possible to stabilise the remaining structure, replacing the demolished part to get T3 back in use will take longer.

T2 still has a linkspan but has been out of use for some time, it is too small for the current ships, it's last use was for the Swift.

The other big change that has reduced the alternatives is the closure of the P&O Dublin Liverpool route earlier this year, this was mainly due to the owner of Liverpool port evicting them.

Irish ferries plan seems to be loading everyone onto Rosslare to Pembroke but I was on a sail rail so that wasn’t a runner. Will take a refund. The train times are terrible from there. At least Fishguard meets the ferry times.
Really seems like Holyhead has been running on a wing and a prayer infrastructure wise and the remaining deck of cards has collapsed

bit sneaky but I’ve noticed slight price rises on the Rosslare Fishguard route with Stena - clearly there’s more demand feeding through

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,831 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Stena are doing a Dublin - Fishguard run for passengers in the short term….

Not sure what connections are like in Fishguard re road/rail, but I can see it being a busy enough town over the next few weeks!!

About 50 km before you reach the dual carriageway. So a slow first hour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,911 ✭✭✭✭road_high

rail is ok. A lot slower than Holyhead which is two track and feeds directly into the GB mainline network.
Road is ok dual carriageway from St Clears onwards. Road to from Pembroke is better and shorter

Sounds lke HH could be a gone for a while.

Irish Ferries actively seeking another berth somewhere.

The dolphins at Pembroke being questioned.

Heysham? Liverpool? Mostyn's too small for Ulysses I'm sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 672 ✭✭✭Not made with hands

From what I've read elsewhere Pembrokes linkspan will fit either JJ or IOI.

Or else they would need to keep adjusting it between sailings which might take too long.

After that I'd say they are talking to everybody other port.

Stena seem to be running Dublin Fishguard quite well so it's going to start costing IF money

Well, at least the other ones are built so that the front doesn't fall off.

Weren't they built as river tankers , and not suitable for use at sea in any sort of rough weather ?

Rumbling on and on now, and this will have a big impact over the next 7-10 days…

I was thinking about Mostyn myself. The biggest ferries might not be able to dock there but modest sized ones have done so in the past.

P&O quit Mostyn (a) because nobody knew where it was and freight didn't get booked onto the route and (b) it needs regular and expensive dredging. It's a terrible location for a ferry port, but that never stopped P&O in the past just look at Fleetwood!

I hear that Stena have chartered in Ben My Chree from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company to give extra sailings between Dublin and Liverpool.

Curious to know the customer service differences between IF and SL from this. Historically always found SL better all round and it again looks like they have better options at their disposals like access to liverpool / their belfast routes / ships that can dock in south wales ports unlike IF.

Feels like IF have done very little at this stage, but they simply dont have the options. Its hard to track but looks like:

    • WB Yeats too big to operate the Pembroke route.
    • Liverpool is full so no space for them.
    • Roslare to France now has the two big ones (Ulysis and WB Yeats) operating so that hopefully adds capacity but you would imagine that this is no good for UK to Ireland freight and passengers. This has freed up the James Joyce which is currently operating the Roslare to Pembroke route but its not additional capacity.
    • Roslare to Pembroke still only served by 1 ferry the James Joyce, but Innisfree is scheduled to take over on the 18th so hopefully that means there will be two ferries operating but their website currently only lists one. The Isle of Innishfree hasn't sailed since the early morning of the 14th and has been in roslare since then. Strange as not aware of Roslare having any maintenance ability so not sure why not sailing. IF website continues to just show the one ferry operating each day.
    • IF are still new to the Calais - Dover route so they cant damage the goodwill they have built up by transferring staff / boats from there so that is a non runner.

Id imagine staff is also an issue, we all know that IF treat their staff very badly and 99% of them are foreigners so I would imagine those scheduled off would have plans to go home so maybe they wont be willing to show any goodwill.

On the freight side of things, the "blind eye" to truck driving rules announced is only valid for Ireland, so no good for a driver trying to get from Holyhead to either Fishguard / Scotland. Also if you exceed your hours in Ireland the infringements are still valid if stopped in the UK / Europe. Government are working on this at the moment with the UK government. Drivers are key here because not only do the traditional truck and trailer combinations need rerouting so do the RORO trailers that have started to dominate the routes in recent years. Dublin to Holyhead was the champion route for this and Fishguard / Pembroke and Scotish ports cant ramp up to match.

Rail passengers also being seriously disrupted. On the plus side, we are so far out from Christmas people can either make alternative arrangement or simply cancel their trip.

Indeed the dredging situation is a a factor thanks to its proximity to the Dee estuary. Irrespective of its location and the factors that mitigate against it's use, it has been used previously and perhaps could be again now that Holyhead is to remain shut for who knows how long.

Or maybe passing on the extra costs. A 3 1/2 hour run to holyhead will use a lot less fuel than a 5/6 hour run to Fishguard

Birkenhead is on the other side of the Mersey, has a double ended jetty sticking out and you can just pull up and unload. Bootle passenger services are now closed I believe, it was where P&O came in. It is a dock system and was a little bit more complicated. P&O shut it down when they could not agree docking arrangements with the dock owner - Peel ports. P&O were pretty much a trucker service, pretty naff. Stena does freight into Liverpool with a ship called the Bore Song. Not for passengers though.

They do run a passenger service from Birkenhead to Belfast though and with the current closure of Holyhead, they are running another ship Dublin to Birkenhead to move all the freight.
