Ivan Yates' calling it podcast has it going Martin, McGrath, O'Callaghan, O'Laoghaire, Harmon. He reckons the 2 FF and the 1 SF seats are certs, he reckons there'll be 1 FG and thinks it'll be O'Callaghan and the last seat is likely to come from either Greens, Labour or Soc Dems.

Hard to disagree with any of that really.

I think that would be the worst outcome that is realistic. Buttimer and Finn just run on a NIMBY platform. O'Callaghan is way more visible around the community than Buttimer so I'm surprised Buttimer would be favoured over him. I'm surprised that McGrath is so favoured. His brother who has a far higher profile wasn't million miles ahead of Bogue who was an extremely divisive candidate. It would be great, but unlikely to see two of Labour/Greens/SD get in. I think they have had the best platforms for the election. FF have the best of the big 3 and FG have the worst imo.

Michael McGrath was nearly 4,000 ahead of Lorna Bogue, Bogue just was the last eliminated.

Seamus McGrath got the highest local election vote in Ireland earlier this year (I think) and could sit at home for the rest of the campaign and still possibly get elected in first count. I don't know what it is, but they love him (and his brother) in the lower harbour.

Can't see a 2nd soft left candidate getting in, unless FG have a nightmare…

The both of them are gods in Carrigaline for some reason. McGrath will get a massive majority of the Carrigaline vote which has a big chunk of voters.

It's not a mystery why he's popular. He (appears to) do more work than the rest of the LEA councillors combined, apart maybe from the young lad from Ballygarvan. I'd say he'd be more popular than Michael but that's to be expected when one is local and the other is national.

He's not a NIMBY either if that means anything

For many years my personal belief is the financial running of the country should not be in the hands of elected politicians who at best have 3yrs before another election is on the horizon. It needs a longer term strategic approach that is not subject to the risk of sudden change due to a different party/coalition in power. I believe all long term issues be it climate change and others should be handled in this way.

I will vote on a local level & that is what impacts me as far as I can see. The changes in budgets on an annual basis are usually for political gain rather than long term benefit & that rarely changes regardless of who is in power.

If I am a dog owner, I would prefer to see one dog free area in Cork South Central than some major capital project where huge expenditure is ringfenced and then mismanaged before the project reaches anything that is tangible in nature.

If your wondering about the Order of your ballot contents and want to print it out and mark it to know the correct order to make as a note. Strip of paper with just your numbers in order? Handy if voting the full sheet?

    https://corkcityreturningofficer.com/index.php/general-election-2024/62-notice-of-poll-cork-south-central

Made a google docs copy of it: - https://docs.google.com/document/d/18-HTMZE9J9MbW1a0eH8L6SCoVT8KCFmuGDR2cqzfk2s/edit?usp=sharing

Please verify the docs people are sharing with the official site. And do for the above as well. I don't want to be charged with influencing your vote! Or giving the incorrect order.

Do they always put candidates exact addresses on the ballot paper? I wouldn't mine on it if I was running.

I think so, this has been a point of contention for some candidates in the past, especially female candidates who get undue attention.

A good suggestion I had heard was to list the address something like

    • "Within the constituency, Cork"
    • "Outside the constituency, Cork"
    • "Outside the constituency, Co. Kerry"

Something like that. I do think there is a benefit of knowing if a candidate is resident in the constituency or not (and which county they live in if it's a big constituency like Carlow/Kilkenny as a example). But I don't need their eircode.

Even LEA would help, incase a constituency straddles a couple of council areas

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,154 ✭✭✭Pen Rua

Is an address needed at all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76,224 ✭✭✭✭L1011

You have to put an address. Many candidates put their party HQ down these days.

UK system tells you the constituency, seems to be working fine there.

Yeah putting people's exact addresses on the ballot is absolutely insane give the amount of abuse that politicians get. Holly Cairns had some weirdo show up at her house in the past.

Cool tool was posted on The Irish Examiner.

I might be wrong but it maybe missing a candidate 'Ward'

Posted about it in General Irish politics discussion thread, so it would get further reach!?

Gave me Green - Soc Dem - Labour. I think I'll be voting the other way around, but not bad. My lowest matches were Aontú and The National Party, so that sounds about right too.

Just used it again now. They fixed the missing candidate 'Ward' that I informed them about. My Top matches!

    image.png

Next 6 at 56% Which included 2 Sinn Fein, 3 Fianna Fáil and Pádraig Rice who is getting my number 1.

3 FG at 53% who won't get a preference from me.

They added a small survey after you do it. The other night I didn't check out the View button to see the comparison between your choice and the candidate.

And mentioned in the local election posts. Anna Daly is the wife of a childhood friend of mine.

Hope a bookmark keeps the same result and I can come back to the results.

After they fixed that mistake they still have errors, after I linked the 'Notice of Poll' to them.

Rather that type it again, sorry for sharing a tweet of mine.

Is the mention of Dineen, Paudie deliberate in reference to his posters that always make me laugh with how they say DINEEN PAUDIE and not the other way round?

LOL. Not all was reading the 'Notice of Poll', and was only going to type the surname, and then decided to give full name for clarity in my post, I include a comma!. Having it printed out enabled me to spot the errors on the website/tool.

Fine Gael out in force in the city centre this morning. Cllr O'Callaghan was on Trinity Bridge by the College of Comm, and then reps for Sen Buttimer were on Parnell Bridge. Lots of foot traffic going by (and lots of rejections of leaflets).

Gerry Buttimer was outside Tesco on saurday, I don't think he was getting the easy ride he suspected. Again lots of rejected handouts. FG really seems to have taken a dip, I wonder did Harris's flippancy last week cost them

Am I correct in asking the 'The Electoral Commission' to have a look at the Which Candidate tool?

I know I was successful in getting omissions correct for 'Cork South Central' and they were responsive in doing so. What about other areas, who may not have someone like me, been observant! As stated in the 'X' thread, I was glad, I kept my account active for this and other political reasons.

Why would an coimisiun toghchain care about a 3rd party site though?

As I mentioned they produce a 'Mock Ballet' with candidates names out of Order, if people take that to the polling station and vote down the list from it, they may give the wrong candidates a preference?

I will be printing the 'Order preference' instead and find the candidates on the official ballot.

    Edit:-

Election watchdog has no powers to order social media sites to take down political misinformation
    • The Electoral Commission still does not have the legal power to order social media platforms to take down misinformation or material that is damaging to the election system.
    • The commission, An Coimisiún Toghcháin, is also awaiting statutory provisions to enable it regulate online political advertising, including on major social media sites.

Thought that should have been in place by now!

First time I think I've voted all the way to the bottom of the paper. I knew I wanted to give Ted Neville the lowest vote and Aontú second lowest, so had to fill in the gaps then.

22 names on the ballot paper was mental.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,972 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

I'll be doing likewise. There are quite a few independents with no info about them (Tony Field, John O'Leary, the two II candidates). It's probably safe to assume that they're headbangers though and I'll have them just above Neville and Daly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,866 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

    • 22: Neville
    • 21: Daly
    • 19&20: The 2 Indpedenent Ireland people (why are they running 2 btw?)
    • Above this: the random indys.

Is there a reason for giving everyone a preference? I just did the top 7
