This is what I was on about. @FrancieBrady has been endlessly going on about RTE, the mainstream media and the favourable coverage FF and FG get from them, and how hard done by SF are.

Well I hope the last few days have put this to bed.

They tried to have a factually true news story pulled

No, that isnt true. But work away with your spinning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,539 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Not sure you know the meaning of ‘endlessly’.

I think this one will run beyond the election. How much pressure do political parties apply and how often?
Have stories been pulled, not addressed properly etc

If they are never acceded to why do they keep trying.
    Loads of questions.

You mean egg on your face Marko 😂

The pressure FG gave RTE to kill the story is very undemocratic and will not be forgotten.

I wonder what excuse Simon will have today. Have they been brainstorming I wonder?

... But the FG statement/instruction is only tinfoil hat stuff. Morto!

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

3 very strong leaders dealing very well with tough questions being thrown at them and answering with great passion

If I had to be a neutral and pick a winner I'd (sadly) have to say it was Micheal Martin on this occasion but he's too much of a yes man. I'd rather see one of the other 2 meet Trump for Paddy's Day to really stir the pot of turds

That is not what happened, and you know it.

These are the projections from a number of sources.

FF look set to be the big winner here.

It is up to you to prove what happened, not spread fake news and misinformation or any old shite waiting for facts to emerge

50 seats would be some seat count for FF.

Not sure where RTE got 5.36 seats for the Greens from :)

FFG + Independent Ireland would work across all those predictions, though FFG + Lab is still more likely i believe.

Watched last night, what a terrible waste of time, that would persuade nobody whose mind isnt already made up. My main take aways from last night and I'm not affiliated to any party so am very much undecided.

Simon Harris - seems out of his depth, could see he was on the defensive from the get go. Maybe the campaign has taken it out of him and after all the issues he's wondering if he really wants this.

Mary Lou McDonald - Just didnt seem to be on the ball, was evasive with answers, seemed to just want to blame FF and FG for the last 20 years of government. I personally still cant my head around how they can cut taxes and yet spend as much as they are saying. She wouldnt answer the question on what was the items they would drop if there was a global economic shock. SF do seem to want to spend spend spend.

Michael Martin - Seemed to know his details, very much the seasoned professional of the 3.

They were all very evasive on Health I thought. MLMcD said the mid west needed a new hospital but then in the next breath was asking FG who was going to work in their one when they said the same.

This election has been disappointing, dont know what was expected. Same candidates each time, nothing is changing.

In my local area, I have had 2 canvassers to my door, one actually was the candidate, to be fair he stopped and talked for 20 minutes, other was the candidates mother. Thats it and they were from the smaller parties. SF, there isnt even a poster for the candidate within a 5km radius of my house, and I would say there are easily 3-4k houses in the area, I live in in estate with over 500 homes. It seems like they will canvas in their own demographic strongholds and make sure they get those votes, everyone else doesnt matter as long as they get in. Irish politics is still too local and parochial, I thought thats what our local councillors were for, the small stuff, national politics should be more to do with the bigger picture.

Still undecided, probably will be till Friday

Simon does want it. He absolutely craves a 2nd term. He does not want to be the shortest term Taoiseach ever. He only cares about power.

I agree, Mary Lou was evasive and should have answered the cut question. If she had answered a couple of questions she would have won the debate. I felt she drew with Martin but he messed up around the coalition talks lies.

    Mary 6/10, Martin 5/10, Simon 1/10.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Michael Martin - Seemed to know his details, very much the seasoned professional of the 3.

Definitely - But I feel what we saw last night comes purely from being party leader longer than the other 2. Much like Peadar Toibín MM is a very strong and passionate public speaker and FF members rightly consider him a good leader but what he stands for is the issue for me

They were all very evasive on Health I thought. MLMcD said the mid west needed a new hospital but then in the next breath was asking FG who was going to work in their one when they said the same.

She missed an open-goal opportunity to say SF would re-open the existing mothballed A&Es at St.Johns, Ennis and Nenagh

On your point about posters and canvassers, generally speaking, they don't put posters in housing estates and canvasing has definitely been down this year. According to my video doorbell they are all calling and dropping leaflets in during the afternoons when most of the population is at work

    On the debate.

Martin came across as a seasoned pro, and we all know that he is an able performer in the media.

Simon Harris had a very good grasp of the facts and figures. Came across as energetic and sincere. Better than expected.

MLMD didnt have a great night, but not a disaster. Was very evasive a few times, and really besides the odd dig, didnt land much. Her chat about "Lets not worry about Trump" was laughable. Comes across as clueless sometimes. She is not good with details.

No sane person would want to be part of that circus. It's so rediculous. It's always a painful watch. I rarely get through it all. It needs to be paired with a drinking game.

I thought Mary spent more time saying "excuse me, sorry, wait a minute" then actually saying anything. Which was dissapointing as the other two are feather weights.

The only time a political debate entertained was when we got that gift of "Ted Cruz's wife's a dog".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

Simon sincere? 🙂 It's a bit early in the morning Marko.

As the analysts on Morning Ireland just said, Martin says it best when he says nothing at all. He talks a lot but there is no specifics. He stays completely safe and also never answers the question asked. Mary Lou often does the same but Martin is an expert at it. They also said Simon's constant mutterings show his lack of experience and composure. Sincerely yours...

    Odd analysis IMO.

MLMD really wasn't good on the housing question, which is the policy area SF should be all over and the policy area she can hammer the government on. Completely lacking in detail with evasive answers.

The question about bank lending one is a straightforward one to answer, they've either got assurances from the banks or they haven't. The evasiveness and confusion certainly gives the impression that they have been caught out here and what they are promising is not going to work in reality. For such a key policy area this is a mess.

SF have really struggled to adjust from their portrayal as an opposition who just complain about everything being terrible all the time, to being able to put forward their own policy and back it up under scrutiny to present themselves as a viable alternative. They are just not good at it.

I suspect that SF HQ are very disappointed this morning in how that went, it was certainly not a strong showing and not going to woo undecided voters.

FF and FG were allowed spend the evening pretending to be the opposition. It got ridiculous at one stage when they both had ding gongs with each other on policies.

While MLMD was a bit evasive they were allowed waffle about what they were gonna do. Not enough was made of their actual records in government and MM got off extremely lightly in that respect.

Nearly every direct question to MLMD was framed negatively and her being asked to account for NI governance when there was not a mention of Covid handling (except MM allowed to thump his own chest on how HE saved us all,) Varadkar's scandal, Coveney's and other ones during the term of government???

At a few points I wondered had RTE been called with a list of questions to ask by the FF FG campaign teams.

Don't worry, I will never vote for SF.

Mary Lou made a better stab at the cut question this morning. She admitted they would borrow if needed to build housing.

Martin didn't answer many direct questions either. He responds by repeating for ages that there is a problem and then waffles. Holly Cairns asked Martin in the last day of the Dail about the 50k affordable houses promise FF had in 2020 and whether the actual figure built was 1000. He refused to answer over and over and over again. He is a charlatan. The actual figure is 1000 and he knows it. But he will never say it.

It's telling that I have still not heard this story being given any proper coverage on the National Broadcaster. (I missed most of Morning Ireland so may have finally been covered)
If you look at how a story about inappropriate texting was in the news cycle for two weeks at least in respect of the opposition it really does add to the questions raised by Ciaran Mullooly and others about the independence of the the NB.

I agree that RTE were soft on the coalition of chaos. Remember we had 4 FF Ministers for Agriculture within the first 6 months. All forgotten now.

The questions towards Mary were very negative. They were all traps rather than open questions.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

The Achilles heel(s) for SF last night was (were) definitely the no bank approval for their housing plan and promoting it whilst promising to end schemes we all know people have used to gather up a deposit

Then being cornered on where would they get the 80 000 workers to fulfill their targets,I mean how in the name of blazes are those 2 gaping holes a credible position for them, unanswered,2 days out from an election?

That was extremely noticeable. 'Before you outline what you are offering whatabout….'

Just on the posters remark. I know they dont put them up in estates, but plenty of main roads around where I live, and some of the busiest in the area at this time of year, near a major shopping centre and plenty of big factories.
