It’s fairly obvious Lando has been prioritised… the team even confirmed it earlier in the season!

During earlier races the pit stop strategies favoured Lando. Not team orders and not immediately obvious bar the 7 point swap in one race.

Piastri seems far more intelligent and mature so his potential seems higher. He seriously needs to improve quali though. I want to see him in a title battle with Max and Lewis. If he tries his wide lines will they push him off!

I think puastri will continue to improve next year. It will be only his third season so he won't be a rookie and will begin to reach his potential. But I don't see him dominating Norris or 'owning' the team as one poster put it.

I'd expect a few point between them either way, but wouldn't expect either to win by a big margin.

I think when Lando looks back over this season at the end of the year and seea where he made mistakes or what cost him the WDC I think he will learn from it and do better next and Piastri will too. It should be a good close fight between them next tear.

They will not have it the there own way though as Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull will all be in the fight too all improved so it should ve a very good close season.

    Peace and long life.

It’s generous to Norris to ignore the contrasting mentalities. Piastri has shown more composure and I’d say ruthlessness at times. Sure he has not been under the same degree of pressure as Norris but that’s where the 4 years extra experience should have counted.

I think that’s one of the appeals of Piastri. Obviously he’s newer and shinier, people are always looking for the next challenger to Max, but the personality with his racing ability on an upward trajectory as shown by some marquee performances are huge positives. If he finds the consistency, easy to imagine a world which sees him overtake Norris.

Maybe the old adage you have to lose one to win one applies to Norris and he’ll come back stronger.

Hard to call at this stage.

Norris really didn’t have a title shot this year. The car came into its own about halfway through the season and he only really had 2 dominant wins. He would have had to have been way more consistent than he’s ever looked like being to be in with a chance.

If the car is strong from the off next season could be interesting. Landos the quickest for now but he makes a fair few mistakes and really needs to sort out his starts. Piastris racecraft is superior and he comes across as more mature, get the feeling he has a higher ceiling. It’ll be a fantastic battle between the two.

The meaning behind 'you have to lose one to win one' is that loss drives improvement. So we're likely looking at both lando and Oscar improving next year. It's brilliant for mclaren and fans. But I really doubt we'll see a dominance by either driver. Maybe a 10% points margin by the end of the season.

Lando was the team leader with the best car for a good chunk of the year. He never really grabbed the chance.

Next year might be different. The car should start the year at the front. The team know that they are in the title fight from the beginning. So we'll see.

Max won 7 out of the first 10 races, and Lando had a huge stroke of luck in Miami with the safety car timing and Maxs floor being broken. Wasn’t until maybe Austria where you could have considered the McLaren to be significantly dominant, and at that point you basically have to be perfect to dig a championship out from there, which he definitely wasn’t. The title talk was mostly sky relentlessly pushing it.

I think he has a fair bit to do to consider himself a title contender for next year if the car is strong from the start. Needs much better starts, more consistency and improved decision making.

Yeah I don't remember it as lando having the best car for the majority of the season. Max had the best car at the start and the others were far behind. Then the others caught up and mclaren had the better car in a much more competitive top 4 teams. Ferrari arguably had the best car now and again depending on the circuit.

Plus the fact that nobody is suggesting Norris is actually as fast as Max and certainly less co sistemt and prone to mistakes and a glaring weakness at starting the race.

So while the mclaren was the better car for a period, it wasn't 50:50 car dominance.

Lewis is DONE with this season...

It probably wasn't clear but I was specifically referring to Norris versus Verstappen with the idea of having lost a title fight may drive improvement.

Have been waiting the last few years for the likes of LeClerc, Norris or Russell to get a title challenging car to see beat Verstappen and Norris has been disappointing overall at the first attempt. Still only the first attempt though and how he comes out next year, from the start, will be important.

Let’s see what happens but I also can’t imagine either of the McClarens dominating each other without intervention.

Stories doing the rounds that General Motors are in "advanced talks" with F1 to get a place on the grid for 2026

Yep, covered here by The Race. Still feels like the Andrettis are being hard done by here…

From the article dont get the turnaround? Because Andretti is less involved?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,845 ✭✭✭quokula

That seems to be the largest reason, unbelievably.

I'd imagine there are other factors - Renault have cancelled their engine program (ironically they were contracted to supply Andretti originally so they'd have been committed to 2026 if that deal hadn't been blocked before) and there are rumours about Audi's commitment being shaky, so the sport is on less solid ground now than it was without bringing another manufacturer in.

I've read talk about Trump's election possibly being a factor too, there were already a bunch of right wing US politicians making this a Europe vs US thing and putting pressure on Liberty about it earlier this year so there could be more political push there.

Andrettis approach wasn't the best in the first place, looks like F1 want a works team. Did Renault pull the plug on its engine because it was terrible or was it financial reasons I wonder as seemingly GM have bought the rights to the Renault engine with the promise to have their own engine by 2028. I do hope we get an 11th team on the grid

New race director is already making friends amongst the drivers. They asked for a couple of changes after practice and these were actioned by the next day. Track limits extended on turn 4 and the pit lane markings were repainted because of the difficulty in seeing them. Good to see.

Probably financial reasons. It would be good if GM have bought the rights to the Renault engine and save all them jobs.

On the engine front, there is a clause somewhere that says if a new team needs an engine, then the supplier with the fewest teams is obliged to supply the new team if an agreement can't be reached.

In 2026 that means it'll either by Honda (just with Aston Martin) or Audi (themselves), the other engine suppliers all have at least 2: Mercedes with 4 (Mercedes, McLaren, Williams & Alpine), Ferrari with 2 (Ferrari & Haas), RBPT/Ford with 2 (Red Bull & VCARB).

Wonder which manufacturer will be forced to supply them? It's a good thing assuming they can get the engines built, as it means they'll have double the testing of their parts then.

    Qatar this weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,597 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Clarification on this: because Audi are a new supplier they can't be mandated to supply any other team yet. So if GM/Andretti can't come to an agreement with anyone then Honda will be forced to supply them.

Helmut Marko is quoted as saying that the decision on Perez future will be made in the next couple of weeks.

Reading between the lines, it would seem to suggest that Perez might only be holding on to his seat because of the money he brings into the team. With the failing in the constructors championship Red Bull might be losing out on more money than the considerable sums Perez brings with him. I wonder does Tsunoda or Lawson bring any sponsorship with them.

Kit Kat are getting great coverage from the camera panning on Perez' helmet when he's being wheeled back into the garage after Q1
