Harris getting absolutely destroyed on social media for how he treated that poor woman yesterday. He's furiously attempted to backtrack and apologised but it's too late the damage is done. A moment like that exposed him for what he is.

If 30 independents get seats, none of them could end up as part of a govt. They can ask all the questions they like in the Dail, it means nil if they arent in govt.

The govt give them air time and move on.

Your rural independents can tell their constituents that they fought the good fight for them in the Dail, but when all is said and done, its just hot air and changes nothing.

If they arent part of the govt, they have no powers to change national policy.

And If any of our 30 independents do get into govt, it might not be be your left wing local TD, but the right wing TD from across town.

Working foreign nationals need to be able to purchase homes and settle, not just rent.

Harris will introduce contributory housing requirements for IPAs. So they will need to work in order to avail of housing.

Much tougher stance incoming from FG, along with chartered deportation planes and reduced benefits for IPAs

too little too late from FG and if it’s like the deportation orders we won’t expect any execution of said policies.

I have a lot of trouble believing anything from a man whose party has been in power throughout these events, did little or nothing about it (or actively made the situation worse) but who now - entirely coincidentally I'm sure with an election coming up - is promising that they will sort it all out now this time, honest!

Delighted we get a real glimpse as the mask slips. Everything is so carefully orchestrated and contrived these days that your rarely get a sense of who the person behind the politician is. Along with his performance in the debate the other night it's abundantly clear that this man should be nowhere near the office of Taoiseach.

Not sure what you mean by non-asylum immigration? People coming here to take up work posts you mean?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,862 ✭✭✭kabakuyu

If FFG have to go into coalition with one of the smaller left parties like SDs,Labour or Greens, those tougher immigration policies will be be first to be dropped in negotiations,we all know this.

If they arent in govt they dont have any power. The locals might think they do, but in reality they do not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,252 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

The only reason he is Taoiseach remember is Leo's sudden departure and any other potential candidate stepping back themselves.

The "default" Taoiseach.. Hardly a ringing endorsement!

For those that want to curb asylum immigration, is there a better option? I dont see any of the major parties with a tougher policy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,135 ✭✭✭Peter Flynt

It's FF and FG who are the lefties on immigration.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,050 ✭✭✭BlueSkyDreams

There has been a clear step change since Leo left and Harris took over. FG have been much tighter on asylum immigration and they have gone too far for many.

But for those that want to see a tightening of the asylum policy, I dont see any other party taking the level of stance that Harris is.

Labour were saying FG have gone too far with the new policies, for example.

They can't curb asylum immigration. As has been said numerous times we have legal obligations.

Could be processed quicker though no doubt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,252 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

The lack of a tougher policy doesn't mean there aren't tougher options.

We could outright refuse anyone who lands with no or false documentation and send them back to whatever country they just arrived from.

We could hold them near the airport until their claim is decided and invest in speeding that process up.

We could actively deport those who fail in their application (rather than asking them nicely to please leave themselves), and certainly deport any convicted of a serious crime on our soil (rather than paying to imprison them as well).

We could reduce benefits to the minimum to stop the pull factor that currently exists.

We could ensure that asylum seekers are actually seeking asylum, not economic opportunities.

    Etc.. Etc.. Etc...

Plenty of things we could and should be doing on this issue.

Also remember... No one is FORCING any of these people to stay if they don't like the conditions.

They got themselves here, they can get themselves home or anywhere else that'll have them if they want to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,252 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Nonsense.. Legal obligations can and are changed, updated, removed, or simply ignored whenever the political situation calls for it.

We've seen it during Covid, we see it locally with planning being ignored to facilitate the housing of refugees.

Internationally many countries have pulled back on Ukrainian supports and other measures.

All that's missing here in Ireland is the political will.

We could do anything in theory. But you cant vote for theory.

You can only vote for one of the parties in front of you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,252 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

I wouldn't pay much heed to labour to be honest. Hearing "far right" come from herself on the debate with only 12 minutes on the clock tells you all you need to know.

Harris and FG have only been tinkering on the edges given the increasing issue it's become for the electorate. There's a lot more they could have already been doing as I said above.

The govt can still push through policy, even if the third leg party doesnt agree with it.

And if there is a red line for a party that means they wont go into govt, thats up to them. FFG can just bring in a small selection of independents.

Its also possible FFG will get the seat count required between them, without needing a third leg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,050 ✭✭✭BlueSkyDreams

FFG only need to do more than SF to win that vote. They dont need to do more than Donald Trump.

Beat the opposition, anything else is irrelevant.

I think anyone with any cop on has known what Harris is like for a long time.

A complete spoofer, a man with an inflated opinion of himself despite having zero talent or capabilitiy.

A man with a diabolical track record in every ministerial role he was given.

Normally people get promoted by being successful or doing a good job in their role but this guy has been utterly useless.

He then has the sheer neck to try and weasel his way out of taking responsibility for his errors.

He is like some head prefect in a school, he isnt fit to run a chip van.

As a side note, there's an interview with Micheal Martin's better half in the Indo, but the headline really should have been thought through a bit more..

‘People try to make out as if Micheál’s ancient – 64 is not ancient, look at Donald Trump’ – Mary Martin, wife of Tánaiste

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/elections-2024/people-try-to-make-out-as-if-micheals-ancient-64-is-not-ancient-look-at-donald-trump-mary-martin-wife-of-tanaiste/a283415781.html

    What a comparison! 😂

No they can't, if the the third leg hold the balance of power in the Dail, they can dictate policy,as has happened with he Greens in the current government.

We all know FfG will be running to either Thr Sds,labour or the greens to form a government, they will never attain a majority by themselves.

Such a shame. His team has pumped out so many Instagram videos with inspirational music featuring Simon cuddling a puppy, sharing a cheeky joke and a dance with a senior citizen, pulling a pint, taking a selfie with a gen z student…

All of that work vaporised in a matter of seconds with a viral video that has been viewed more times than all his fluff campaign videos put together.

Reminds me of the time Gordon Brown fobbed off a woman on the campaign trail and then got into a car with his mic still on and proceed refer to her as a bigot.

No, which end of which bar did you hear that in?

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

None of those people moaning in their twitter bubble were going to vote for his party anyway.

What I love about this is, the MOL teachers thing, was a nothing, a storm in a tea cup, its forgotten! This wont be … Then again, it only hurts him , if it stops people voting for FG… I highly doubt many carers vote FG, as left wing as FG are, in Ireland the media particularly the peoples gospel that is RTE, brand them on "the right" … So probably wont hurt them much, but I am delighted, as criminal as the Irish Taoiseachs in recent history have been, and they have been appalling. A boy scout as leader of this county, is taking things too far, even for here…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,557 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

There is no way FG have gone too far, what are they proposing? We are a walk over, I can imagine even if FG implemented their change, we would still be a walk over…

My preference for the coalition of failure we are going to get, would be FFG, Greens. If its not the greens, then I would way prefer it to just be FFG. Appalling as the prospect is…

FG said they were the party of the tax payer and prudence, failed on both counts. We always knew where the rest of the parties stood on those issues. FG total change to blending into FF and a current insufferable leader and one as bad in varadkar, Kenny awful.

And therein lies proof of part of my point. Why the hell shouldn't somebody be able to buy a house on a single income? You don't even have to go back to the 1970s. 1990s. Early 2010s. In 2013 my sister bought a three bed semi d for 135k. That house is now valued at 400k. Not only have the goalposts moved. The whole damn playing field has been changed. And then we have people like Blanch, who played on a completely different field, telling us that if we "work hard" it will all be grand. Bullshit.

Yes. I do want to buy a house on a single income, because believe it or not, I would like to have a family. This shouldn't be a particularly unattainable goal. Just because I don't have kids now, doesn't mean I don't want to.

It was called bigotgate,Brown went to her house to apologise and get hand shake photo op but lady refused,Labour went on to lose GE.

Harris has come across as petulant and unlikeable and his apology insincere.
