If superchargers were "dotting our country" they'd be predominantly V4's other than the 5-6 sites we currently have so it would be a double-win for everybody

splash and dash ☺️ haven't spent more than 10minutes on top up charging last few years

Still at least there will be new sites even if they are open to all.

It's been a barren spell, they seem to forget Ireland exists from time to time.

I remember after the first wave of sites opened(ballacolla, birdhill, castlebellingham) it was a few years of watching "Enfield, coming soon" before anything happened.

Yes absolutely if they are opening new sites that's the most important thing. Opening V4 gives Tesla an extra revenue stream, which then if used enough by VW's, Kia's etc will hopefully remind them that Ireland exists a bit more often

Its disappointing really. Supercharger network in Ireland is probably smaller than apple green at this stage. Certainly circle k, and Ionity have moved forward. It's really undermining Tesla ownership against other brands. Which is a pity because when it's combined with a proper supercharger network, and built in payment/ nav/ battery prep; it's a great way to travel.

Dungannon Supercharger open & open to all.

    Sandyford now open to all.

Sandyford!!! That will not be popular with Tesla owners

Dungannon yet to make it to the App

I’ve never not had to queue at Sandyford. The sooner the additional stalls are added the better!

Absolutely ridiculous. Makes it pointless doing the upgrade, wait till 4 MEB cars take the 8 stalls out. FFS this company is such a meme at this point.

I was at Sandyford at 10 last night, 4 chars charging, 3 waiting to get in.

Work going on in front of the sc stalls but that might be just to add more space there.

Bit of a mess opening those up now

that work is adding an additional 4 Superchargers.

site is being expanded to 8 stalls.

Complete nonsense opening them up. Absolute BS

Here's the really silly part IMO, you could modify a V2 or V3 Supercharger with a longer cable pretty easily

You'd have the cable looping down to the ground, up to the top of the charger with some reel or arm to support it, and back into the holder in the center

So no issues with cable length at chargers, and probably a cheaper option that replacing all superchargers with V4

But I bet Tesla won't do that because the chargers would look like cobbled together crap then

At a guess it has to do with streamlining the production facilities. Tesla like their efficiency in that way. Guarantee if it made more sense to apply longer cables that's exactly what they would do

It also helps with brand recognition. If you drive to a charger and see the white/black V4 you know that any EV can charge there as opposed to the red V2/3 models which might or might not work with other EVs

I'll just point out that 4 of the stalls in Sandyford will be V4 so in the case of 4 cars having to charge from a port on the rear drivers side or front passenger side there should be at least 2 chargers free for other cars

So unless they really stretch the cables it would take at least 6 cars with the chargeports on the rear drivers side or front passenger side to stop the other 42% of cars from using the other 2 chargers

I was talking more about retrofitting existing chargers.

The original reason for the short cables was definitely cost related, but it does also make handling the cable a lot easier because it's lighter

I don't see any interest in retrofitting however, might have happened 5 years ago when the network was smaller but I doubt it'll happen now

By the sounds of things even by expanding to 8 stalls it will be crowded, crying out for 12 stalls. I mean it serves the Capital and all

Theres supposed to be another site in Dublin coming soon as well which might help. Lots of apartments around SandyFord/Cherry wood direction so lots of public chargers needed!

Making stall availability more accurate than ever – The latest Tesla software update improves the accuracy of stall availability estimates. We can detect when another EV, with a charge port located somewhere other than the rear left or front right, is plugged into a short-cable Supercharger stall. This update ensures no more overpromising of stall availability, so you can travel with confidence. We will continuously refine this algorithm to be as accurate as possible, including exact site mapping and faster refreshing of stall availability.

    • Increasing number of long cables - Longer cables mean that V4 posts can serve all port locations. In the next 18 months we will have more long cable than short cable Superchargers.

Modifying our sites to avoid blocked spaces - We have modified over 1,500 sites so that drivers never have to use more than 2 charging spaces to charge, increasing stall availability for all.

    • Encouraging the best charge port locations - Since opening up the Supercharger network in Europe in 2021, we've encouraged car manufacturers to transition charge port locations to rear left or front right. This provides seamless compatibility with 30k+ short-cable Superchargers available to other EVs globally.

It makes no sense for a non Tesla driver to use the Sandyford SC site. You'll likely have to queue, there are no facilities on site, there will be lots of Tesla drivers grumbling because you are taking up two stalls, it costs between €0.60 - €0.66/kWh and if you are in an eGMP 800v car, you'll max out at a 97kW charging speed (on any Tesla SC in Ireland).

There is an eight stall 200kW ESB hub at Carrickmines, less than 10mins away costing €0.59/kWh and as low as €0.42/kWh with a Freshmile card. I've only used it a few times since it opened, but never had to queue.

I think the marketing around SC sites has gone to some people's heads if they turn up at Sandyford in a non Tesla.

Don’t underestimate the possibility that some non Tesla drivers won’t be one bit bothered about annoying Tesla drivers.

As a Tesla owner from limerick if I'm in Dublin for the day I never go near the supercharger... Less hassle to use one of the online motorway hubs either at Kill or at Junctions 14,18 or 24... 6-8 stalls and decent services

The only people who I think would get any use out of Sandyford are those who travel the M11/M50/M1 corridor but I'm fairly sure there's better options there as well

Yeah, that Carrickmines site is ultra-dependable and easy to access. Always use it for a splash and dash if I'm coming back from the west.

Maxol in Newbridge is very dependable too, a bit expensive but always one available.

There are some crazy massive sites in California, one has 98 stalls apparently. They could do with some of that big scale thinking here (maybe just 15 or 20 stalls).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,430 ✭✭✭markpb

ESB would have a collective hernia if Tesla put in a grid connection request for a 98 stall site. Or even a 20 stall site for that matter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,044 ✭✭✭Exiled Rebel

They're coming. If I was to hazard a guess I would say the first 16-20 stall type hub will be operational in less than 5 years.

Getting the power necessary to operate a hub that size is the biggest issue. When an application to the ESB is submitted it could take a year or two for the necessary work to be done upstream.

...and it's not like they are not busy. The country is incredibly power hungry these days with demands on the network increasing by the month. A friend was talking to an ESB EO recently who said a unit sub used to be able to power 10 to 12 homes. Now that's down to 6 to 8 due to the increase in power demands e.g. heat pumps, EV's, etc. etc.

More like they'd get the biggest collective boner of their lives from the amount of money they'd make

That's a little unfair, this is the Esb we're talking about, not the OPW😁. Now if Tesla require a security hut or anyone cycles to work, then that would be a different matter.

While I sympathise for the average overworked ESB engineer, it isn't like the company is running a charity. If you ask for 1MW of power then you'd better be bringing your chequebook

So there's plenty of money being spent on the extra capacity that's needed

If I have one major issue with ESB it's that they seem to be trying to run the show with a bit of a skeleton crew

There doesn't seem to be a major recruitment drive for extra engineers and frankly the ones who are there now seem hard pressed between new housing, data centers, EV chargers and the occasional Bert coming along and wrecking a chunk of the power grid
