Thread started by syranbruen for next week's colder spell

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 394 ✭✭Thunder87

Probably the same event you mentioned but there was a decent snowfall in Donegal on November 10th 2019 as well, I think probably the earliest lying snow I've seen

Yes it's by no means a definitive list. There will have been a good number more. Another one I didn't mention was November 1965 which was exceptionally snowy for northern parts of the UK and there were several cold episodes throughout that affected even Ireland but besides flooding rains, it was very wet in the east, there is no information I know of on the snow aspect of that month here. You would think so with synoptics like this.

Speaking of early snowfall, wasn't there some snowfall in October 2008 on higher ground? I believe there has even been rare instances of snow being recorded in September .

I really have been delighted with this prolonged spell of settled weather, it's been fantastic. For me dry and calm is always a deal breaker and I've got loads done in the garden and was able to enjoy working outdoors, a bonus in Ireland, certainly in Kerry.

While I love a good cold spell as much as I love a summer hot spell, I'm hoping this cold weather predicted for next week might give us a miss here in the south west. I've just planted a griselinia hedge out front and that's a plant that doesn't like it too cold.

Yeah I remember snow on Halloween here in Kildare that year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 394 ✭✭Thunder87

Apparently so! Can't say I remember it but a quick search threw up this thread. Some good nostalgia seeing some of the names in the thread!

Ye I'm going through this thread now to see how bad the snow was

Well in this part of the country we've had at least 2 weeks of wet miserable dark dank crap. The lawns are desperate to cut but it's never been dry.

Another damp dank morning. 5C and cloud. Leitrim

A great piece in the London Times this morning about early snowfalls in the past. Apparently they have a saying that, historically, is often true when it comes to an early cold spell.

“If November ice will bear a duck, there’ll be nothing after but sludge and muck.”

So it's time to start duck watching, lol!

    3C. Showers. Dark.

Bitter cold here in Meath and spilling rain for the last couple of hrs. Cold enough to see your breath

Cold and wet in Galway. Those first two weeks of November were just lovely. Dry and calm. More of that please.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Got some lovely weather Saturday here with a chance to catch the latest big moon with clear-ish skies.

    Yesterday dank .

Today is everything I hate , wet cold and grey .

Don't mind a bit of cold weather as long as it's dry .

Down to 2C here in South Leitrim. Rained nearly all day and still raining. If it freezes the roads will be lethal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,887 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

The rain has gotten heavier in the last hour or so. A slight rise in temperature too during the course of the afternoon

I have it as snowing heavily on the 29th October 2008. Big mainly wet flakes that stuck on dithes and grass for a time due to the heaviness of it.

I see on the cold thread , Januarysnowstor, used the term 'torrential snow' and my little one asked me today was there going to be 'snow floods' 😁

Torrential melted snow falling in Greystones!

Heavy rain still ongoing here in Meath, local road pooling with water. I doubt i'll be seeing any snow tonight with the affect of the Irish sea keeping much of Leinster in rain.

After lovely benign weather for the past month in Dublin, an awful 36 hour rain event! I suspect soil moisture deficits are a thing of the past.

Woke up by the wind last night in West Limerick. Branches and small trees down around my place and came across bushes and trees on the N69 on the way into work which was a surprise. There was a reading at 3am at Shannon of 61km/h sustained and 86km/h gust so that was probably it. I wasn't expecting it to be that windy last night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 347 ✭✭ascophyllum

Mace Head recorded one gust from the East of 74kmph, that little low must have tightened somewhat between Galway and Limerick for a brief time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,748 ✭✭✭✭zell12

Also any snow falling will melt as the ground is still comparatively warm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,766 ✭✭✭OldRio

After a wet night it's a cool morning. No mist or drizzle or rain. (The first day in a long time) No frost last night. Normal November morning. 1C.

    Already -1 here at 8pm.

I'm dreading the morning commute already, with all the rain over the last two days the roads will be like ice skating rinks🥶😭
