Spain is the only country where the band have had a #1 single, and those three chart-toppers all came in 2008.

I remember "Komodo" but admittedly not "Pulsar".

I am surprised that "Komodo" did not reach the UK top 10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,183 ✭✭✭its_steve116

Conversely, "Sweet Lullaby" by Deep Forest, on which "Komodo" is based, reached #10 in the UK but only #11 (one mere place lower!) in Ireland.

Definitely remember 'Komodo' as well, though his name didn't really ring a bell when I saw about the Shels connection. 'Pulsar' might be the better track.

UK seems to have preferred dance music from the UK? More or less...

Further to my last point, Deep Forest are French.

from a review of PICOTTO's second album:

"The Others" starts with an interesting Picotto Verdi remix of Pulsar from the previous album. After a sort of calming trance introduction, we get to hear someone spell for us. "M-A-U-R-O-P-I-C-O-T-T-O-D-J-D-J!" I wonder what that spells. Doesn't really matter though, because then we're treated to some rather wicked (yes, WICKED!) bass synth grooves that sort of follow along with the original tones of Pulsar... although sometimes it feels like a completely different song.

JX reached #15 in Ireland with "You Belong to Me" but it only reached #17 in the UK.

    Queens of the Stone Age

"Burn the Witch": #36 IRE, DNC UK

"My God is the Sun" #92 IRE, #118 UK

For some reason irishcharts.ie only lists "No One Knows" as their only charting Irish single.

The site only has singles that made the top 30, fair enough really as it was only a top 30 that was published for the first 40 years or so

I don't remember this but maybe someone does, the follow-up to 'Open Your Mind'

    Usura– 'Sweat'

    Ire.#10 UK#29

"Open Your Mind" also peaked one place higher in Ireland, reaching #6.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,183 ✭✭✭its_steve116

"Is This the Way to Amarillo?" reached #3 on original release in Ireland but only #18 in the UK.

The Irish were never as cynical as the Brits music wise, and it's actually a nice song.

I can picture Simon Mayo or Peter Powell refusing to play it on Radio 1.

Also there were a lot of grifters pushing crap records to BMRB record stores in the UK forcing the decent records lower in the charts than they might have been.

Key Largo sounds a bit like "Rock and Roll Kids" actually. Haven't heard it in 40 years.

Those two songs by Abba, the song by Boney M, the song by Elton John and Cliff Richard and the song by George Michael were all mentioned in previous posts by me in this thread! That aside, there are a number of interesting entries here. I particularly like the disparity between the Irish charts and the UK Charts for Nanci Griffith's version of From a Distance! Incidentally, Bette Midler's version of that song got to #3 in Ireland and #6 in the UK.

When I was three and "How Do I Live?" cane out. I hadn't noticed that there were two different versions of it. It was Leann Rimes' version that was a hit in the UK, only peaking at #7 but becoming the 6th biggest-selling single of the year in that country!
