Posters may only be erected after polling day has been fixed by ministerial order. And for a max of 30 days before polling day (not relevant for this election).

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

This might interest some people here who seem to think there’s no point in voting. This unlike the generic ones is Ireland specific and you enter your constituency at the start.

A lot of truth in that. Culturally too, we're part of America. Not strong Europeans at all. We're in the EU for the goodies.

The main interpretation seems to be that anything put after midnight on the day of the writ, becomes retrospectively legal once the writ is issued.

SF hasn't a notion of being in government unless they go in with either FF or FG.

Do politicians get first dibs of street light and electricity poles?

This is completely hypothetical but if a village or estate decided in November to put up Christmas lights on these poles (wrapped or draped), can politicians put their posters over the lights?

FF seems the more likely option. FG, on the other hand, fat chance.

Correct. Has anyone said they have?

Mary Lou said she would 'rather' be in Govt without FF or FG

Big difference to saying we want to be in Govt with FF or FG

I’ve heard it said that Michael Martin's ruling out of SF isn’t a party wide feeling. Yeah FG there isn’t a hope but I’d say it’s a two way street in that regard.

I dunno. In an era of Confidence and Supply and now outright Coalition, the politicians and parties themselves are the ones deciding who will get into power, not the electorate. Back-room deals to make up the numbers and a resulting Government that no-one really wanted - before it actually happened, how many FG or FF voters would have imagined or wanted them in power together, the supposed "choice" wholly removed in the process.

It'll be the same again - FF and FG negotiating to keep themselves at the trough and SF out (the only part I agree with as they'd be disasterous), with whatever mudguard - sorry, I mean "coalition partners" - needed.

The net result will be more failures in housing and health, the pushing through of the entirity of McEntee's "hurt feelz" bill and other such nonsense while being overrun with more chancers landing on our door.. all while the average middle-class worker continues to get screwed over, pays for everything, and has their kids living in their box rooms.

The "alternatives" are anything but to the group above.. that's the problem too!

He's right. We have very little in common with the rest of the EU. We're closer aligned to the UK and US in that regard.

We're in it for the money and trade opportunities - that's fine, but that's also why it should have remained the EEC as that's the same reason that most countries joined originally. Unlike the US, there's no shared European identity or culture or values with national/local interests (especially those of Germany) winning out over any notion of "the greater good", and most of the history between the members is bad to awful. These are also the reasons why the "union" will ulimately fail or certainly never reach it's full potential.

Our politicians love the EU as it gives them an easy scapegoat when needed, and a cushy retirement/promotion option when domestic politics becomes unpallatable or they get turfed out, but the EU only benefits Ireland (and most of the other smaller nations) by happenstance, not design. Many of the citizens are increasingly unhappy with it and this is reflected in voting trends over the last few years and large-scale protests too.

Cheers that was kind of interesting.

In theory that would be ideal but who do you actually vote for?

    1. Independents - yes some are good but a lot are just FF/FG in disguise. Even if enough got elected to form a government it would not last long, too many chiefs
    2. Sinn Fein - MLMD totally and utterly dropped the ball. Showed their true colours while in "opposition". Should go into the history books and how to not shoot yourself in the foot. Have zero faith in them actually doing anything just different snouts in the trough.
    3. The greens - with any luck , Roderick will lead them into oblivion.
    4. SocDems/PFP/Labour - People are suggesting things could not get any worse, they would this lot. Iv will repeat - can you imagine the likes of Paul Murphy with even an iota of power?
    5. Aontu - One man show - cant see them getting more than one or two seats.

If you don't vote, others make the decision for you.

Yep, Mehole on posters in Wicklow this morning. And he's from Cork !!! 😁Plus some soundbite out of the Bertie Aherne playbook underneath.

I think that's the difference now. Before you got everything via an RTE filter, now you can see them warts n all from loads of sources.

In my book FFG can not be forgiven for another housing crisis. The have been pretty much the only party in power here and they always act in the short term.

They simply have no interest in addressing the problem and will keep supply low enough so that it appears that things are being done but prices and rents will still go up.

The only thing that will "fix" this is an external shock like in 2008.

Dumping young Irish people/students/valid immigrants/single people/people on low wages ... out of affordable rentals to be replaced by refugees with very questionable refugee status, to be never deported again, is pure greed, selfishness and stupidity from the landlords in the Dail.

And their smug faces in the Dail is just sickening. Really, it's abhorrent.

People hate the greens, but they did stand up for their principles and means we got some stock of much better quality housing and renewable energy supply in this country.

Without them, FFG would have had 1994 quality houses with 2024 prices.

Unfortunately they stepped out of their remit and you've got people like Roderick O Gorman making an absolute disaster of immigration policy.

Housing and health and justice and and and.

Same party, different day. Get in on the property game or emigrate . That's Ireland. Oh, and Guinness.

If they have billions to waste every budget, and that is what they do, abolish USC... do I think its necessarily prudent? I mean, they should be bringing way more into the tax net, and marginal rate of tax needs to drop to 45% maximum and with a way higher threshold, but it will never happen here. It would benefit only ' the rich' yes the rich on 44k a year and over... LOL!

Did you see the posters of Grainne that appeared overnight.

    She has a lovely smile.

Did you see her ad in the paper?

Someone should tell her who the Minister for Health is and what party he is in.

Michael Martin rules out coalition with Sinn Fein

Remember what he said before election 2020

"Election 2020: Micheál Martin rules out Fianna Fáil-Fine Gael ‘grand coalition"

Wouldn't believe a word he say

It’s irrelevant.SF won’t get nearly enough seats to be considered a junior partner in a coalition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,920 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Simply put, they can't do any of that without the votes from the electorate. This is how the system works, but again, if you don't vote you literally have no say in any of it.

If this is what gets voted in…then what grounds is there for complaint? The people will have spoken.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,557 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

True, but when all the options are useless, the outcome is going to be identical... a huge amount of people not voting, tells its own story…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,557 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

A house on my road, had been vacant in South Dublin for 20 years, a total and utter scandal. I mean they won't even do the basics right, tax vacant property at a reasonable rate, to encourage its use... "but this is what we will do, tax it at .0000001 % " you see, we are serious about housing "

They are clowns and liars with no shame, but the consequences for many are serious. Luas only running until 12:30 in a city of 1.5 million, more comedy...

So this is my prediction: -

    1. FF will get 60 seats
    2. FG and SF will get 35 or so seats (this is an election for FG to lose)
    3. The Greens will be down to 2 seats in Dublin
    4. Soc Dems and Labour may push upwards but not in double digits
    5. Aontu will have 2 seats
    6. The Far Left will be gone
    7. Independents will grow massively
    8. The Far Right will remain outside

IMO with this make up FF will be in position to create a minority government with FG as leaders of the opposition but providing a confidence and supply agreement.

And I will eat my hat on that.

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

I'll be voting FFG. The country is the envy of Europe with its dull employment and massive excess exchequer funds.

3 weeks notice. What an insult. Do they think people don't make plans? Some people need more notice. Guessing Simon wanted to wait until the American Election hype died down
