These arguments are based in no semblance of reality.

The US is producing record amounts of crude oil, more than Saudi Arabia. Oil prices are not within the gift of the President but they are below where they were for most of Obama's presidency and the low prices during Trump's had very little to do with him but current prices are not particularly out of the norm. The US has been a net exporter of oil for a very long time now, so the sanctions on Russian oil had very little impact domestically. The idea that burning more coal would solve the energy problem is farcical - there are innumerable reasons coal production is declining everywhere.

Because the poster I as replying to specifically mentioned firearms. I didn't bring it up, I was response to somebody who did. You aren't great art reading comprehension are you.

Thinking only the far right of society own guns is deluded. Even more so, when it was compared to europe, where some of the most progressive countries also have the highest gun ownership.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,390 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

To place gun ownership and the 2nd amendment above all else is a right wing view. But that's not what you said is it? Are you moving the goalposts now because you realise you are wrong or is you grasp on left/right, guns/no-guns really that black and white? Which is honestly a view I'd expect from an 5 year old.

Claiming that every single gun owner is a 2A zealot, and therefore anyone with a gun is far right, is to be frank, absolutely clueless. Especially when it was compared to Europe, and highlights claims being made with zero knowledge of the matter.

Like everything, views of firearm ownership is a spectrum. It's entirely possible to in in favours of civilian firearm ownership, and also be in favour of responsible gun control.

But if you only form your opinions on the extremists, then your going to be way out of touch. (case in point, this election).

His time would be better spent enacting policies that he said he'd enact once elected. With a solid cabinet, of people with specialst knowledge, who can deliver and not his lackeys. He's been here before and delivered on sweet fcuk all in his first term. Inherited an economy on the up and kept it going. Well done. Why didn't he fix the border last time. Hmm

Sure we'll see what happens. I won't hold my breath that anything good will happen.

Not agreeing with the poster but Barron is 18, not a child.

As someone who can't stand Trump or a certain type of Trump supporter, or Musk or MTG or Lauren Boebert et al, he's the democratically elected president to be, and once people are magnanimous in victory, well good luck. The Trump supporters who act like a bunch of children though with their gloating and their vocabulary that comprises "soy", "cuck", "reta*d" and "cope" (not really here) when someone slightly critiques the man - way to be utter snowflakes and not fans of free speech. Political discourse has gone down the toilet in places - the level of "yeah well... you smell". Imagine that childish buffoonery in, say, the Nixon years. Bit of decorum would be nice.

On the other side, I really don't think it's as simple as Harris not getting enough votes because she's a woman of colour. She was campaigning for mere months, and what did she offer of substance? There are republicans and their supporters who have a terrible attitude towards women who don't agree with them though (and there are plenty of women among them) which is not fun.

I'm looking forward to Republicans overcoming their economic anxiety in January and deciding that 2% inflation, record high stock markets, and 4% unemployment are actually very good and that the country is back on the right track.

You should search out the clip where she is imploring women in the crowd to turn around and thank Harvey Weinstein for their careers.

Her decision to run or not more or less coincided with the weaponisation of the clip for an ad with the Republicans

If they keep to the schedule, we might end up with President Donald Trump congratulating the astronauts, representing mankind's return to the moon. Going to be a peculiar four years….

Why Americans would vote for a convicted felon, a fraudster, a known liar, and a adjudicated rapist, who paid off a porn star with campaign finances and then lied about it

Maybe, just maybe. A large chunk of Americans didn't buy this narrative and perceived that the Democrats were utilising the politically biased justice system to get rid of a rival candidate. You know the type of thing that goes on in third world banana republics, and they did not like it.

Ah so we’re back to the victim of a rape made it all up to frame Donald Trump.

Even though the victim was vindicated in the court of law.

But the law doesn’t apply to Trump as we know.

The democrats in the past few years just picked the most pointless battles aswell.

They rowed in behind trans-women in women's sports and demonised anyone who stated that it's unfair to allow transgender women in women's sports.Anyone with half a brain can see it's clearly unfair to have biological males in women's sports and yet the democrats decided that even when 85-90% of people are opposed to trans women in womens sports they still decided to support it.

The railed against voter ID yet again most sensible people are in favour of voter ID and anyone with sense is in favour of it because having to present ID if you want to vote exists all across the world.

This made them look like complete idiots and I think these 2 issues probably played some role in swaying some voters as they were pointless things to make a big deal about and yet they did.

In any case, it doesn't seem to have been much of a factor in this year's election. Firearms policy has been mentioned almost as an afterthought in most campaigns be it federal or local, and the electorate don't seem pushed about it either. Not one State had a firearms-related item on the ballot this year.

facilitated by SpaceX / Musk … there'll be a woman on the moon before there's one in the White House

Appeal to authority (politically appointed and patronaged authority)

I suppose you think courts are infallible, as long as the verdict aligns with your politics

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,390 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Exactly, because it's non-partisan issue. The ignorance around firearms is staggering, understandably so when people get their views from mass media and facebook. But that doesn't make it any less ignorant

Still thinking about that late Seltzer poll for Iowa.

    What were they thinking?

No one is going to trust any of their numbers again.
Iowa has gone 13%+ for Trump.

That means that the poll was 16% out.

    Was wondering.

Still, among the laughing stocks they fit right in.

I think one of the things that has become quite profound in American politics, is the huge imbalance of political influence Republicans have on social and new media. People will say this is countered by mainstream media being quite liberal, but nobody trusts msm anymore and viewership numbers are dwindling.

The reality is Republicans, through rich donors (and probable foreign actors) have invested and built a huge right wing eco-system online where political information and talking points are distributed. Influencers push right wing narratives that engage and energise their base and attract all kinds of demographics, but particurly low propensity young male voters. And these right wing influencers have massive audiences, some I notice on Twitter/YT have millions of subscribers and views.
Left wing social media has nothing close to this. They talk about Democrats having a good ground game, but it’s not worth much in 2024. I’m sure people would have noticed Trump going on tonnes of podcasts, this more than made up for the lack of ground game by Republicans. At the end of the day, despite Trump being quite undisciplined in his messaging this election, he still controlled the narrative around inflation, as well as the border, foreign policy, etc. And that control will continue until democrats find a way of catching up on improving their messaging and communication to the public.

It was a desperation move. they clung onto an outlier poll as a ploy to try and stifle Trump support.

It was empty and vacuous just like the Liz Cheney quote and the Puerto Rico joke.

I really don't buy the idea that if she has more time to campaign she would have won or at least done much better. Her highest poll numbers were all early in once she had the nomination. The longer it went on, the more people saw her the less popular she became. It's hardly a shock, when she ran for the nomination in 2016 she got nowhere. She simply isn't a likeable or skilled politician.

I don't think you can call that rigged. Trump just played the changed rules/laws way, way worse than the Democratic Party - to the point that he cost himself any hope of success, whether there were attempts to commit fraud or not.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ~C.S. Lewis

LMAO, you're taken the high moral ground and given up on America after your Hero loses. Don't be jealous of Trump and embrace another 4 Years 😉

Trump kicked Harris' arse plain and simple. The hit job the media tried to do failed big time. Trump is a Winner and has been all his life. A fitting end to a great Man who can retire on the highest level there is when his time comes or the at the end of his Presidency. Congratulations Mr. President Elect Trump.
