Booze Runs To The North

How often do people go and would you recommend?

I'm from the West of Ireland so a trip to the North is about 5 hours round trip on mostly sh1te roads.

I seem to remember people doing this 20 or 30 years ago.We had one neighbour who would head to France with a van for wine.

Even as a kid I could figure out that it made little sense from a financial point of view when you factor in fuel, your time, putting up miles on the car etc.

However these days I'm getting so badly fleeced every time I get a few bottles or cans I think I'm going to have to figure something out.

Full disclosure, I'm a self confessed IPA w@nker so I'm not talking about slabs of Bud or Carling.I like craft beers and higher % IPAs.Before MUP I could get a 500ml bottle of O Haras double IPA in Lidl for €2.Now I have to go to a local petrol station and pay €4.25.

330ml cans of Brewdog are working out at €3 each or more.

A long way of asking a question but have you ever done a booze run to the North? Any tips, dos and don't etc

I felt sorry for the poor students who were hit by MUP. Not mentioned in this report, but the Students Union in Galway were organising fleets of buses doing Booze Runs. Is that still going on?

    https://sin.ie/2022/01/25/minimum-unit-pricing-hitting-student-wallets/

NUI Galway Students’ Union President Róisín Nic Lochlainn was critical of the regressive nature of the measures as a flat tax, saying it will disproportionately impact the less well-off. “Students across the island already experience financial instability with emergency hardship funds seeing thousands of applications every year, and this has only been exacerbated by the pandemic. “It’s also extremely unfair on the family who may like to occasionally drink on a Friday after a long week of work because they simply will not be able to afford it anymore.”

I live in a border county and it would be rare enough that anyone would bother travelling more than a few miles to get drink north of the border unless they were getting a load of stuff for a wedding or something. There isn't much of a saving anymore. A bottle of Smirnoff is about £18 and a bottle of IPA is around £2. The Euro has gone to sh*te this last few years.

    Yeah that doesn't sound great!

I just had a look there and 10× 440ml Brewdog is £12.50 in Tesco whereas its 4x330ml here for €12-13 (sometimes cheaper on offer)

Not exactly but that nearly a third of the price in the UK,it would be worth filling the car up with that.

Added difficulty is that its hard to find if tesco prices in pounds online are for the UK or are they different in the north.

I think it goes without saying that if you were going to take a long trip there you would be getting a load of stuff.

Depends on what you are getting and where you are coming from, but if you get booze and at the same time stock up on pepsi/fanta/coke/sprite etc (which are usually on sale) along with ibuprofen/paracetamol and various toiletries then there are definitely savings to be made.

Would if i could, 4 hour round trip just isn't worth it.

Feck MUP, I miss €20 slabs of 538ml Guinness.

You need to do your research before you go as to whether it's worth your while or not, no point in simply driving up and going around supermarkets. I've seen deals on Brewdog before but not really familiar with other IPA beers to know what's a deal and what isn't.

You would want to be spending circa €400-500 for it to be worth a trip, that should give €200 plus in savings. The loyalty cards are a must to get the best deals. ASDA, Tesco, Sainsburys and LIDL are always cheapest, run of the mil off licences up there can't compete with their prices.

1 litre of smirnoff is currently £19 in Sainsburys with nectar card and €31 with club card in Tescos here. Bit of a difference if you're stocking up to be fair.

MUP was the killer but throw in the extra 15c per bottle or can, plus the ridiculous amount of tax and the highest price of takeaway booze in the EU.

I really resent getting shafted if I'm having a few drinks on a Fri night or staying in on a sat.

From the responses on here its looking like it might not be worth it,especially with the distance involved.

I'm not in the north often, only really go there for GAA games so might combine that with a booze run in Feb or March.Ideally I'd like to do before Christmas though

Thats a great point. Can i get a loyalty card without a uk address,i wonder would my ROI Tesco clubcard for example work up there?

Tesco ROI loyalty cards don't work in NI. You may be able to get a virtual card by downloading the UK Tesco app

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 341 ✭✭watchclocker

It won't, and to download the tesco UK app you need to change your phone settings to permit it but then you need a UK phone number to receive the confirmation SMS (

And it's not easy to get someone else's card because the tesco app doesn't let you screenshot the card for "security" reasons (in other words they don't want people sharing cards to get discounts!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭HBC08

    Good info!

I think I'd deffo need to have a loyalty card anyway,so a virtual Tesco one might be possible. I figured my ROI one wouldn't work.

We do it every couple of months and stock up on soft drinks, water etc as well. Can definitely be worth it.

My son lives in the UK so I have all his cards. All screenshot btw and have never had a problem using them in Tesco, Sainsbury's or Asda

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,323 ✭✭✭SteM

We were over in London last week and a friend sent us the barcode for his UK Clubcard via WhatsApp without any problems.

Now that you say that, maybe it's an apple v android thing. I do remember apple not allowing apps to implement security rules but android did so for example banking apps and that kind of thing

So just need someone with an iPhone then maybe

For the Tesco Clubcard you need either a UK Google account to see the app in the Play Store or else download the APK file of the app and manually install it. You can use a screen grab of a friend's UK Clubcard but sometimes the cashier may not accept this. ROI card not accepted.

The Nectar card which Sainsbury's uses is available as a physical card in-store, no need for apps.

    Interesting....

I never heard of APK apps before but a quick Google search gives a few options so thanks for that.Theres a Reddit thread saying that's an old app and Tesco updated in April but definitely worth further research.

    I have family in NI.

No one is taking in to account the cost of the fuel for the trip.

There are a few things that are good value such as Champagne if it's on offer.

Depends on the exchange rate as well.

I mentioned in the OP that fuel and time spent are the biggest factors.

With the price of the beers I like having more than doubled in the last 18 months it got me thinking that I may have passed the tipping point for a booze run to the North, hence the thread!

No such thing as a cheap night in now,I spent as much in the offie as I would in the pub.Just trying to find some sort of workaround.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 313 ✭✭littlefeet

At £17 with the Nectar card is about € 22 of our money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭HBC08

Wouldn't be a massive champagne but no harm in picking up a few bottles just like your link for the Christmas season or a special occasion. I'm guessing you'd pay a lot more for it south of the border!

I do a few runs a year, doing your homework online first and having a shopping list is a benefit. Soft drinks are now a lot cheaper up there since we got DRS here. 24 cans of Coke/Pepsi/Club orange etc for £8. Can't even get the 24 pack down here since DRS started.

If you're ok with slabs of alcohol, normal 'sale' price I get most of them for is 18x440ml for £10.

Also, Asda let you download and use thier Asda rewards app on an Irish number so no messing around with them.

The savings in DRS have more than covered my fuels cost since it came in. And fuel is much cheaper up there at the moment, for example I filled up on petrol at £1.29/l last week (around €1.55/l) V around €1.70/l ish here. Not as good a difference with Diesel but still cheaper.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Asda have 3 for £23 on various packs of beer. E.g. 3x10 Heineken for £23 or €27.41

Same qty and abv* down here can't be sold under €52.07

€25 saving per 30 cans, buy enough and it's definitely worth the time/fuel

*Heineken is 5% up North so im using that in the MUP calculation

I used to live in Newry and the amount of cars and small vans with D , W and even LK plates was unreal from November on loading up with crates etc . I still live in the North so beer runs aren’t a thing for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭HBC08

Great value there with that deal.Exactly the kind of thing I'd be looking for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭HBC08

Good to know with the Asda loyalty scheme.

I will definitely be picking up some soft drink s and toiletries based off the advice on here.

Enniskillen is the biggest town I would hit first so hopefully they have an Asda aswell as a Tesco.

It is a big Asda, and Tesco is nearby. Just in case anyone thinks there is an Asda in Newry, there isn't.
