Happy to give a screenshot of my UK Tesco and Nectar cards if anyone wants them. PM me. You get the savings , I get the points.

You can download the asda app and use an Irish Number.

If buying in Sainsburys occasionally, you should buy something small first and then the label machine may print out a £10 off £40 spend. Voucher obvious doesnt apply to alcohol

If you're at the self service tills in Tesco NI ask another customer to scan their Clubcard for you.

As has been mentioned the exchange rate is bad at present. For cash this lot are probably as good as it gets.

    https://www.dundalkbureaudechange.com/#calculator

I bought £300 back in the day for €330, now it would cost me €364. That would be a consideration in planning a trip. I am old school and use cash as I always know how much I am spending. Do people using cards and phones always know if they are getting a good rate in shops?

Asda have the exchange rate for that week displayed at the tills. Think it was .8270 on Monday

If you are going there OP then get to Home Bargains if you can.

Ibuprofen, Paracetamol etc are around 29 - 49 pence for a packet of 16. All your toiletries like shower gel will be around 99p. Deodorant will be between £1 and £2. Washing detergents are cheap as are cleaning products.

My parents are in the north and every time I go I load up with around £100 worth of stuff. Keeps us going for 3 or 4 months. Sainsburys have a good selection of craft beers. PM me if you want a screenshot of the nectar card (I have my mum's card saved to my phone for more savings).

"I'm from the West of Ireland so a trip to the North is about 5 hours round trip on mostly sh1te roads."

I think for the OP to get to the nearest Home Bargains or Sainsburys would add a lot to the round trip. There is a B&M in Enniskillen, which would be similar to Home Bargains.

Boards is still a great site!

The excise on beer here is similiar to the excise on beer in the UK.

The high prices here are due to supplier market power.

Revolut rates are nothing to shout about unless you are doing 1,000s and don't forget the weekend take.

Vouchers are usually dated for the next day or later.

Where did you pay £1.29 for petrol? I see £1.45(e1.71 approx) minimum north and e1.62 south

I found an off licence that sold 5L kegs which are great . Check out a site called beerwulf. . And look for 5L kegs . No need for equipment just chill for a day or two and ready to pour pints All sorts of Lagers and Ipas

If you are using petrol then you can save €10 when filling a tank, which reduces fuel costs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,897 ✭✭✭✭cj maxx

A full tank makes the car heavier so uses more petrol . Plus don’t fill near the border or In Monaghan as the pumps are fixed

GO petrol stations are around the 129.9 at the moment. There is one in Tyrone near my parents and they were at 124.9 2 weeks ago.

I have a UK club card and the UK app.

I just created a Gmail account and set it to the UK. Signed into the play store with that account and downloaded the app.

For the UK address I just put in the address of the tescos I go to in the north. I'm pretty sure I used my Irish number but if I didn't I must have made one up.

My friends all use my club card, while you can't screenshot it from the app they just took a photo when my brightness was turned up to full on my phone of the bar code and it works for them.

I also signed up to the club card extra thing. It's 8 pounds a month and you get 10% extra off two shops a month. That might be useful for you as you get the first month free on it, so you could sign up, get your 10% and then cancel it without having to pay.

On the club card plus I just looked and you would get the 10% off alcohol if in the north as they don't have minimum unit pricing like in Scotland and Wales.

The 10% is maxed at 20 gbp discount, but as you get two a month just split your shop in two so you can use both vouchers, giving you a maximum of 40gbp savings if you spend 400 pounds or more.

Also I looked and the first month free offer is still going strong.

Is there an off licence up north with these 5L Kegs.?

    I doubt its €10.

Petrol is £1.30-£1.32 in the better priced garages. So circa €1.60/L - €1.65/L depending on the card you use. Prices here are about €1.69-€1.74 (as low at 1.65 in some places). So about 8c a litre saving and about €4.00 on a 50 Litre fill.

Savings on alcohol not nearly as good as they were and when you factor in a probable higher consumption because its there in front of you, the travel time and the expense of driving, there just is no discernible saving

But some people will compare the highest possible price here with the lowest price there and convince themselves they are saving more that they actually are.

The example of €10 on a 50L fuel purchase is a classic example

Or the silly one about tins of Coke Fanta being more expensive here because of the the deposit return.

Hint you get you money back when you return your empty cans

Tesco and O'briens have this on offer nearly all the time.

So comparing the full price here V a special offer there is more false comparatives.

Currently (and since mid October) a 4 pack is €7 or €8 in Tesco depending on which one you want. Same in O'Briens

    Tesco UK a 4 pack is £5.50 (about €6.70), so a "saving" of 8c - 33c a can)

The 12 pack is generally £16, so an extra few cent saving.

They do have a brewdog basic lager and basic ale for €12.50, but reviews are not great.

If you are up north for a day out and passing a supermarket, you'll save a few bob, but a dedicated trip simply is not worth it

I go once a year in the EV during the save 25% off 6+ bottles of wine offer weekend, I only purchase wine and some whiskeys on offer that weekend. About 150 bottles on the return journey. Significant savings, as the mup is not applicable on purchases. Should be heading again next march. I will continue to do this while mup is in place, even if the cost difference closes.

Depends where you're coming from. Anything more than 90 minutes of a drive probably isn't worth it but under that and I think it is.

We had a party last Christmas and invited a good few friends over. I reckon I saved upwards on €150 on the alcohol alone.

I also stocked up on pharmaceutical products...(€2.79 for 12 paracetamol here vs 3 packets of 16 for £1 is a no brainer). My daughter's can get their deodorants around £1 to £1.50 vs €5 here.

If you know what you're going for and you shop cleverly then it's a worthwhile day out but again if you were travelling from Killarney to Newry then it wouldn't be much use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 312 ✭✭littlefeet

That's a protest not cost saving.

There are a lot of offers wine. I have got NZ wine for €9 here, taking in to account the exchange rate it's would be hard to better in NI.

Things like painkillers are cheaper in NI I think it was Home bargains where I got painkillers for 39 cents for 12.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,882 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Border people are looking with envy at the Dubliners getting the big savings. Border people always got their drink in the North before MUP, so it is still the same price for them. Looking at the oceans of booze coming across, it's no wonder they need so many pain killers. But at least they don't suffer from any Cost of Living Crisis.

Everything in the UK and NI has gone a mad price compared to a few years ago but compared to 20 years ago the changes are insane.

An awful lot of Irish Govt supporters on this thread!!

Petrol in Newry last Saturday was £1.249 ,Revolut gave me 84p per Euro last Thursday,so in Euro's it cost me 1.486 Euro per litre. My local petrol station was selling petrol at 1.719 Euro per litre on Saturday evening.I saved 23.3 cent per litre, purcashed 50 litres and saved 11.60 euro on that fill up.Throw in the carparts, beer, spirits, washing powder and shower gels etc I purchased and the savings are really worth it.Plus its a day out to see a few new places.
