Pollsters don't just count responses. They often apply different weightings to different demographics to arrive at the final percentage predictions. Other state polls are obviously not using the same methodology as Selzer. This is why this new Iowa poll is an outlier. We'll know next week if her methodology this year is as accurate as previous years.

I doubt it will for a few reasons.

Firstly, I'm not sure that's not what the voters want. We couldn't vote Paxton out of office even after he was impeached by the Republican controlled house. He is arguably the most conservative politician elected to major office anywhere in the country, and we couldn't even knock him out in the rcent primary. He's the one who wrote the private cause of action law to limit out of state abortions. I suspect the preferred Texas solution to the recent stories is to tweak the system, not reverse course and allow abortions.

Secondly, it can be fixed at the State level. The reality is that it's unlikely that if Harris wins a suitable national law will be passed. Other states have figured out that a right to access abortion can be voted in at the local level, Texas would be no different should the citizens choose to do so. Thus far, there has been little indication that they do, however. If they wanted to, they could solve their issue locally and still happily vote Republican at the federal level.

but that’s been evident for a number of days no? Something biggish seems to have moved the odds this evening…

You would think a poll would be asking someone how they are likely to vote. It's like a yes or no question!
    It's Family Fortunes 101 ffs!

Stop doing weightings and just poll more people!

Trump's plan to nick the election laid out nicely by The Nation.

    https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/little-secret-trump-johnson-election/

Trump doesn't give a shite about attracting new voters, or even losing old ones and has said as much publicly. He aims to reduce the amount of electors to force a tie then let the GOP dominated House hand him the WH.

So, for all the pro-trumpers on here bleating on about how Harris is so awful, remember that Trump is a swindler, and this will be his biggest scam yet.

20% of Iowa are independent voters (272k), even going with a generous 60/40 split female/male, gives her a 105k margin. Trump won in 2020 with a 138k margin. So in 2020 what did Biden win the independent woman vote by? +28 may be an enormous margin, but is it less or more than Biden? You need to compare it to something.

Anyone I have spoken to over there suggest Trump by a landslide- I hope that’s wrong!

The more polls move toward Harris the more hyped up trumpers will start being about votes and counting (whether the polls are accurate or not).

The sh!t will really be flowing from their mouths.

Emo maga, the safe spaces play the soothing sounds of Tucker carlson and alex Jones and they get to play make believe with alternative facts all day long while using the dems weather control device to make red white and blue rainbows.

Regarding the shock poll thing: only one poll matters etc.

Regarding reading the tea leaves into the bump in Republican registrations: are people certain those are Republican registrations for Trump? ☕️ I’m just saying, never have I ever seen a Democratic candidate with a veritable coalition of Republicans behind them before. ‘But that’s none of my business…’

Not exactly but it seems like it’s trying to take some of the branding back from Dark Brandon. Also as Musk seems to be the leading character of “Dark MAGA” and based on his behavior such as eg. His lottery, shady canvassing operations, questionable disinformation campaigns etc. it seems like just another branch of MAGA that is willing to win at all costs by questionable means.

the more it looks like Harris will win I worry about what level of violence they will deem acceptable.

I’m really worried what some of them might try and pull off in Tuesday. I don’t think they will care how bad it looks for Trump to do it either.

…on the lighter side: Kamala will be on SNL tonight. Look forward to Trump having a meltdown about “election interference” tomorrow

When you get to that level, you get a hat to point at. Like scientology

Any indication how the house and Senate races are going?

I don't think they do, that's you giving your opinion. But I did read about that story yesterday morning and thought WTF. Is this for real? New York really needs to get their priorities right. This story is getting a lot of coverage, and rightly so. Set politics aside.

The New York State Department of Environment is getting ratioed, getting criticised from every corner and rightly so. I would have seen videos of that squirrel over the years on Twitter. There was no need for this.

Unfortunately it's just not that easy. It's fiendishly difficult to get a sample that is representative of the population that you are interested in.

That's made even more difficult in a modern world where people don't answer their phones to unknown numbers or answer their doors to strange people (if they even are at home). Some groupings of people in particular are notoriously difficult to survey.

That's why most pollsters resort to weightings and that's where the real skill in the profession is.

I wonder what will be attempted before Nov 5th to win the day .

Just a slight switch from the polling, come absolute cracker quotes in here

Trump, Epstein said, was almost “functionally illiterate” but did read the Page Six gossip column in the New York Post. He was “incapable” of reading a balance sheet, and any “act of kindness” would have been an accident.

    another

On the tape Epstein can be heard saying, “He’s a horrible human being. He does nasty things to his best friends, best friends’ wives, anyone who he first tries to gain their trust and uses it to do bad things to them.”

On one occasion, Epstein alleged, Trump took a woman to what he called “the Egyptian Room” in an Atlantic City casino. Epstein alleged, “He came out afterward and said, ‘It was great, it was great. The only thing I really like to do is f--- the wives of my best friends. That is just the best.’”

For anybody who steps in with “Harris being friends with Diddy…”, stop yourself, read the above, be quiet.

Rightly so why? Do you have any idea how large New York State is and how important forestland is to the ecosystem?

The squirrel story is bonkers. Some bureaucrat was clearly lacking in some common sense. They killed the squirrel in order to test it for rabies - despite that fact that it had been living in the guys apartment - so self evidently not rabid.

I don't see any link between that and the election though - except for in the fever dreams of the people who are already deeply in the bag for Trump.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,725 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

The dramatic Trump/MAGA reactions to this squirrel thing though are a life imitates art rendition of Bill the Butcher pretending to give a **** about a dead rabbit in Gangs of New York (the “poor rabbit” scene).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,837 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

I think you've missed the point... by a country mile. People are using that Tweet to criticise the department for needlessly killing the squirrel and a raccoon.

Betfair uses decimal Odds pricing. In that, 2.00 is the same as Evens. Prices less than 2 indicate a favourite, >2 indicate an underdog. The further from 2.00 you are the bigger a favourite/underdog you are.

Harris was 2.30 on Betfair just before midnight.

    She's now jumping between 2.22 and 2.20

Is Kennedy still on the ballot in all States even though he has supposedly withdrawn in favour of "Sweet Potato Face"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,725 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

some states he is some he isn’t. Depending on which states he figured would be better or worse for Trump he either sued in each state to stay on the ballot, or stay off the ballot. It was a real mockery of the legal system too, eg. In states he wanted off he told the courts it was about integrity of elections ‘I don’t want voters to think I am willing to do the job’ etc. while in other states begging to stay on… 🤡

It would be something else if abortion was the issue to cost Trump the election - something pollsters haven't really been predicting.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,885 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

In fairness, I thought the comment in the Trump press release about how Peanut should have claimed to be a foreigner seeking asylum resulting in New York hooking him up was about as good a link to the campaign as they could have made.

I still doubt it will change many minds, though.

If only some of these Trump supporters would be as concerned with the government wasting time and effort for killing all of the black folks that cops kill.

    Squirrel Lives Matter I guess.
