K Rool's theme from the final battle in Diddy's Kong Quest is legitimately one of most metal tracks you're ever going to hear in your life.

If Switch 2 is backward compatible with Switch games there's that problem solved

The music app is better than no legal availability at all of Nintendo game soundtracks, but it is still a supremely Nintendo experience to see them do something like this (put out their own app gated behind NSO sub, rather than either make them commercially available or put them on widely used music platforms) and then have some folks praising them for it 😁

Artists make so little money from the likes of Spotify or Apple Music though. This adds more value to the subscription service (a subscription where 100% goes to Nintendo) and if it upsells a few more subscribers or retains subscribers then that’s a win for Nintendos accountants.

They’re making the NSO subscription have more value and thus people are less likely to unsubscribe. It’s not a bad business model. Not saying it’s best for the consumer just that it’s an increasingly common model nowadays.

Of course it's good news as far as Nintendo's beancounters are concerned. But... I'm not a Nintendo shareholder, I just like (some of) their games.

Given how impactful some of the specific tracks are, I hope their composers get some kind of royalties or bonus out of this. (It's much easier when you can just buy a game soundtrack to know who the money is probably going to).

In terms of customer-friendliness "sign up to NSO and install a specific app just to listen to music from Nintendo games" is at best neutral. I don't care about tying it to an NSO sub, but I need another app for something like this as much as I need another hole in my arse. But I do get that, if you're on NSO anyway and view this as a freebie, it's kinda neat. A lot of my grumbles would go away if they'd give me a web-based player, but I also know that's almost certainly not going to happen 🙂

Nintendo doesn't credit composers on new Nintendo Music app

Nintendo should be crediting the music composers.

I'm enjoying the music app so far, nice for a bit of background music and since I never really played Animal Crossing I'm finally getting to hear the musical stylings of KK Slider.

A widget would be a nice thing to add it they get round to it.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

A cynic might be forgiven for thinking they'll start nuking YouTube channels that have these OST's now as a result of this....

Nice to have if you're an existing subscriber, also nice that it's a curated and apparently well put together package, they should be crediting composers though. I'd echo your point about yet another unnecessary app too. Still, they've done worse things...

    Disappointing.

Current day Nintendo really is trying to disassociate the works from the individual creators. They've been coy and even omitted who actually develops some games. There is only "Nintendo". Only "Nintendo" made games and "Nintendo" made music.

The same cynic might also feel this app came into existence partly to nuke channels gaining an audience on the back of Nintendo's IP.

The kids are playing Animal Crossing as it's Halloween 🎃 time there. It's been played on/off since the start of covid. Good value for money. 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,000 ✭✭✭Inviere

And then lock it all behind a subscription pay wall, rather than just having said channels/videos demonitised? Yeah, sounds pretty Nintendo really....

Its all supposition though, I'm just hopeful that they leave OST channels alone, while offering NSO users this new service at the same time. There's room in this world for both.

Rigourously obliterating fan channels is like Nintendo's second favourite pastime, just behind suing anyone that's so much as googled the word 'emulator.'

I for one love it just because my partner got embarrassed when she recognised a Nintendogs track.

    Plays washing the dog theme

Partner eating breakfast ignoring me up till now. ‘Wait! I know that one!’

    Show her the screen

    😄

Super Mario Wonder music has been added to Nintendo Music

September came and went, October came and went, and yet all those sure of a Switch 2 reveal were unsurprisingly wrong.

Instead we got an alarm clock, a XCX remaster and a music app (all of which are wonderful in their own respect). Nintendo masterfully trolling the “insiders” who shockingly never predicted any of that.

For those doubting Alarmo is Nintendo's latest system, here's the inevitable Doom port

Nintendo Cuts Yearly Forecast After Another Weak Switch Quarter

This morning, Nintendo reported its latest quarterly financial results to investors. The previous trend of weak Switch sales has continued: the hybrid handheld/home console sold only 2.62 million units this quarter, for a lifetime total of 146.04 million units as of September 30, 2024.

The quarterly Switch sales decreased by 10.58% year-over-year. A similar result was seen regarding quarterly software sales (39.6 million units), which dropped by 10.66% compared to last year's quarter. Out of the new games, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has sold 2.58 million units, the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake sold 1.94 million, and Luigi's Mansion 2 HD reached 1.57 million.

In this underwhelming quarter, Nintendo's operating profit went down by 29.07% year-over-year. Moreover, the company cut its forecast for the full fiscal year from 13.5 million Switch units to 12.5 million units:

Switch is now roughly 9 million units behind the lifetime sales of PS2 and 8 million off the DS.

Furukawa says there's no change to Nintendo's plan to announce the successor in the current financial year, but wouldn't go into specifics.

Shares in Nintendo closed 3.9% down ahead of their earnings announcements, below the Nikkei average of 1.1% gain.

Frankly, Nintendo have no-one to blame but themselves if the market decides to go to town on their share price. All they have to do is announce the new console and give an estimate of when it is coming out. How hard is that? All of this skulking around does not do their brand or investor confidence any good.

Personally I have lost interest in the Switch 2 at this stage and moved on to Playstation 5. Any of the RPG's or sports game that I play are available, in a significantly better format, on other platforms. This would have been unthinkable for me six months ago.

Yeah its getting a bit played out at this stage. I sold up just before last Christmas expecting to own next gen for this Christmas. Don't regret selling as got a good price right after completing TOTK. Cant understand why they're dragging their asses behind them on Switch 2 for so long...

Guess there goes any chance of tangible Switch 2 news this calendar year. On to 2025. Back to playing games in 2024.

I find it funny how all these analysts, etc are now saying we shouldn't expect Switch 2 news until 2025. Wonder how they worked that out from Furukawa basically saying there'll be no news this year. Those analysts earning their money as always.

And Sligeach, outta curiosity, why are you behind bars?

Nintendo President Furukawa has confirmed that the Switch successor next will be backwards compatible & have Nintendo Switch Online.

That is great news. Better than the announcement of the new system itself imo. Glad they finally confirmed it. Would have sweetened the news if he also teased that Switch games might run better on the new system.

Nintendo Switch 2 OS Menu Allegedly Features A Performance Toggle For Portable Mode

Twitter/X insider NWeedle has claimed that the Nintendo Switch 2 OS menu features a performance toggle for use in its portable mode. According to their information, users of Nintendo’s next console will be able to prioritize either battery duration or power in its portable mode.

This would be a good option to have.

Rumour: Nintendo Preparing to Ship Huge Number of Switch 2 Consoles for Launch

According to a new rumour, Nintendo is potentially preparing up to 7 million Switch 2 units to avoid any shortages at launch and thwart any would be scalpers. This is 2.5x the amount that was available at launch for Switch.

Chinese online service for Nintendo Switch to cease operations from March 31, 2026

Might the service start to close 1 year on from the release of a certain new Nintendo platform? There are recent rumours that Switch 2 will launch at the end of March next year.

There are always rumours, because there are always people who - despite the last 15 billion rumours turning out to be arsegravy - remain convinced that the next one will be totally accurate.

Japan's fiscal year runs from April to March, so it's not particularly odd for a B2B contract to be matched to that cycle. If you think Nintendo is going to be able to drop hardware support, much less willing to lose the income from NSO subs, starting 1 year from the launch date of Switch 2, then you must be enjoying some politician-calibre party treats 😜

IMO much more likely is that the original contract (announced sometime in 2019) had a set duration. Whether it's being allowed to lapse because Nintendo decided it's not worth the effort, or because they've got something else i mind, is not the sort of thing we get to find out about ahead of time…

(Also, that's an eyesore of a gif to be embedding in a post for no reason)
