Lol. I wouldn't be holding up the equal rights amendment as an example of the success of the process. It is actually a perfect example of how the process to amend the US constitution is entirely unfit for purpose. The last modern day amendment to the US constitution was in mid 1971 (excluding the oddball 1992 amendment that took 202 years to pass). The reason for this is that the procedure is arcane and designed for a country with far fewer states. The EU had to update its treaties with enlargement, something which the USA failed to do, resulting in its constitutional paralysis.

The only way the US constitution can be practically amended is through supreme Court rulings and justices that flex the ancient text to suit their own partisanship. It was that tactic that brought about both roe vs wade and it's eventual overturn - when by right that should have been an amendment.

The US clearly needs a modern constitution or at the very least one that can be modernised.

And the other side are indeed half the population, as this election will show. Just because someone is not affiliated with a party doesn't mean they "sit in the middle". They can't be when forced with an A or B choice.

I would have to agree with you. The American constitution and its fetishization as a quasi-religious document is literally destroying the country from within. Its well past its sell by date and as you say - damn near impossible to amend.

the reality is the Dems could never pull off a stunt like this- they are far too snobbish, bookish, intellectuals who hold disdain for those that work hard with their hands. They’re a lower form of life in their eyes who shouldn’t have a say. That’s why they’re fuming and in with the dismissals of trumps campaign tooling. They just don’t get it and don’t want to

An yet the people of America are looking likely (just ) to vote in Trump ahead of Harris,

Why are red states subsidised by blue states then? Clearly they're just lazy and expect to get by on others' hard work.

If it meant having to behave, think or live like Donald Trump - then, honestly, no.

    The inconvenient truth.

The fact someone like Trump is even in the running again after what he has done speaks volumes about what America now is.

    It does indeed.

How manifestly ignorant/racist/selfish half the voting population is, along with how craven the GOP is.

Absolutely. And just how poor a candidate Harris is not to mention what a terrible job Biden has done these last four years right?

who hold disdain for those that work hard with their hands.

I love when Donnie's clapping seals come out with stuff like this 😂 😂

You should read up on all "those that work with their hands" who were stiffed by Trump when they worked on his building projects. I suspect you won't though.

I'd be reasonably confident that Biden will be viewed positively retrospectively as a president tbh.

    Yes, yes it does.

It has nothing to do with Harris. We saw with Clinton it was supposed to be because she was part of the Elite etc, none of which is true of Harris. We were also told in 2016 that people just wanted change and were willing to bet on something different. Again, that is no longer usable.

So, after his term as POTUS, and the last 4 years of multiple convictions and the attempted coup, the stealing of classified documents etc, the reality is that the views that Trump is selling, ie anti-immigrant, reducing womens rights, looking after the wealthy on the belied of trickle down, is what a very large portion (we will see next week whether it is a majority) of the country want.

That is democracy. Many on here, many in the US and around the world, may see that for the weird situation it is but that seems to be what they want.

It worked exceptionally well. More are talking about the garbage truck than the MSG stuff now. A shrewed move.

I don't want Trump's cabal to win but unlike others I'm happy to give credit where due.

It's a self-reinforcing dichotomy. The more one half portrays the other as ignorant/ racist/ uneducated etc ( however accurate that may be), the more determined that other half are to vote for the candidate that they believe will stick it to the perceived 'elites'.

Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959.

The amendment process demonstrably works for 50 states if it was amended in 1971

I don’t think you’re making a compelling reason to throw out the constitution. And there is always an Article V convention to consider: never been done, but exactly how you’d make major sweeping changes to the constitution in a sitting.

One thing that I don't think any Trump supporter has considered, certainly not taking significant account of, is the effect that allowing a person like Trump to win will have going forward.

We have already seen the negative impact he has had on the level of discourse. He has made lying and simply making up stuff not only accepted but almost expected.

But far more than that it will embolden all those that see this as a means to get ahead. Not just politicians. Trump's supporters have effectively stated that they don't consider the law to be something to be taken seriously if it is against what you want. So why would any criminal pay it any heed? Just continue to say that you are being picked on, that you are being signalled out. If Trump can do it why not every signal person stopped for anything? Sounds far-fetched but that is a natural conclusion. When caught, tried & convicted is of no consequence then the risk v reward formula is changed forever.

Look at Bannon's recent release from prison. Has he come out having learnt his lesson and now accepting the rights of the House and Senate? No, he has come out knowing that he has nothing to fear from the country, that he can get away with pretty much anything. The only problem was that Trump wasn't the POTUS, but that will be fixed shortly.

So while Trump may win, many expect that he will achieve little. He is both lazy and incompetent. But he has set a tone, a tone that the people of the US seem happy with. And that will only bring the next stage. The next person won't be lazy or incompetent.

And as we have seen on these very pages, the democrats continue to struggle because they haven't been willing to get into the dirt with Trump. But if they lose this then the calls for a Democrat version of Trump will increase. A call to get down and dirty. To hold up legislation purely for political gain (like the border bill). Aggressively target the SCOTUS appointments. Not saying they haven't done this in the past, but ramping this up. They will need to get tougher on immigration. Need to get more America first.

That is the real outcome of Trump. Although he created a lot of damage in his first term it was repairable given that he lost in 2020. At that point, it looked like it was a brief dalliance and ultimately not worth it. But a Trump win, or even a very close loss, changes all that. It shows that it is working and what people want and it needs to be turned up not turned down.

So while every election is stated to be the most important ever, this really is true. Does American continue down this road of a breakdown of the law, a breakaway from consensus and working together? An acceptance that truth is no longer important? That words have no consequences? That only your feelings matter and only your wallet matters and to hell with everyone else?

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

It’s funny in a very strange way that some Americans surveyed stated they’re voting for Trump because he’s very entertaining 😀

I mean of all the qualities to have in your president I would have thought that wouldn’t feature in the top 5

Looking at Manic Moran's post [including it's CNN insert] above, it looks like there might be a reduction in mail-in votes this year, at least in Georgia, over the in-person voter so far in this early voting stage.

As to what could be driving things that way, I will not point a finger at any single beneficiary of that reduction and leave it at that….

Nothing at all. Trump's tv stunts have proven that.

It doesn't help that the likes of the USA cross border illegally to create power vacuums that beget refugee disasters.

You're average yank has already forgotten they invaded Iraq illegally.
