Is it really though? Wasn't there always a bit of this toward the scorned immigrant group of the day?

The Economist ran a long article not long ago about how vast swathes of the country were built around a perpetually increasing population and how they'll wither and die if population growth is arrested or the population decreases.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

How can Americans listen to him?

I'd say it's 25/30 years of having their brains turned to mush from watching reality TV from the likes of Jerry Springer to Trump himself throw in the likes of the Kardashians & Hilton's and Fox Entertainment News promonting Hate and Divide, Us and Them, Wealth and Poverty middle America has been completely desensitization to the real world.

What Trump say is just another reailty TV Entertainement programe to them not the real world.

Targeting immigrants has also been the bedrock of American society from close to day one…Irish, Italians, Muslims….

Steve Bannon said they are going to declare victory almost immediately and cry foul and theft if anyone objects and not doing that cost them the win in 2020

He also said Laura Loomer is going to be head of communications 😐

Large swathes of Americans are very insular - they know nothing about world affairs - their geography knowledge is non existent - quite simply the dollars in their pocket and the cost of things is their primary concern along with safety - if you don’t or can’t nail these two issues, then your chances of election or reelection is severely curtailed - the rest- Nazi like rallies, racism , criminality, bin lorry’s - these are all just either side issues or side shows to them - if the Trump back room boys and girls have done their homework and feel that they’ve already won or that Harris has already lost, then these “stunts” are simply “entertainment” at this stage while they await the result

Double irony being that the sparser the population density the higher the Trump support.

I was just thinking earlier of when I went to the USA back in the 80s on a student visa and I got a job in a building maintenance crew and nearly all of them were illegal immigrants from Latin America. No one raised an eyebrow about that then, cops weren't bothered as long as you didn't step out of line and grey immigrants stayed in their respective ghettos. I was living in New Jersey and while walking to the shop one day cops pulled up alongside me in their patrol car and asked me who I was, what I was doing. They didn't ask me if I had a valid visa, or asked to see my passport. All they said was "stay out of trouble kid" as they drove off.

I knew plenty of Irish then working illegally in critical infrastructure who'd then go home to Ireland for holidays via crossing the land border with Canada and then onward by plane. Many become legitimate via the Morrison visa program in the 90s too, but my point is that was how the US had worked, tacit acceptance of irregular immigration kept the boiler room of the economy humming while those on the top of the pyramid couldn't see the labouring at the bottom.

When they're freaking out about not knowing who's in the country they're not understanding that their country is built upon immigrants who shed their old identities to become part of the franchise.

Trump was as dependent on such labour for his hotels, so he has zero excuse for his race baiting.

Post reported for underhanded name calling, and your reporting my post after I called you out on this in an attempt to save face was pathetic.

There seems to be quite a bit of intentional disruption at elections centres by MAGA stooges, hassling staff and delaying voting lines. This election is going to be dirty, and it wouldn't surprise me to see a voting centre shot up or similar.

A lot of really interesting perspectives from some American citizens in this article - it gives a small insight as to what’s on voters minds and how they’re thinking - probably one of the better articles on the American voter psyche that I’ve seen

This point really resonated with me - the ability to discus and debate doesn’t exist in this election.
I was trying to put my finger on why Harris’s efforts just didn’t look like or feel like they were making any inroads or impact - and this quote below probably explains why- no one is actually listening .

“The inflammatory rhetoric, the noxious stereotypes and the intractable position of Trump’s supporters who might or might not like him, but will vote for him anyway, is proof that the US is currently incapable of conducting any sort of discourse “

And this point is also quite poignant too-

“This will be my second presidential election and I’m tired of having to vote against a candidate instead of voting for one. “

“This will be my second presidential election and I’m tired of having to vote against a candidate instead of voting

    forone. “

That simply shows a misunderstanding of democracy. Very rarely does one get to vote for someone they completely agree with. It is always going to be a compromise. It is what is at the core of the support for Trump. People believe they don't have to compromise. They simply ignore anything they don't like and convince themselves that Trump will do everything they want.

Harris doesn't get the same treatment. Israel, immigration, inflation etc. These are all points that people have legitimate concerns about. But, would they be better under Trump is the only real question.

So any vote for something like POTUS ultimately comes down to which candidate is closer to what you agree with than the other. In effect, you end up voting against the other person rather than for one person as you aren't overly enthusiastic about the latter.

Because almost without exception, the institutions the establishment operate despise him. Non-tabloid media. The universities. The judiciary, other than those he managed to appoint himself. The civil service, the professions, Silicon Valley apart from Twitter, the cultural elite. Big business merely tolerates him. About the only institution that I can think of that would instinctively back him is law enforcement, and even then, just the blue-collar element within it.

Well, that was a waste of ten minutes. I woke up and caught up through pages of arguing about taking private 'plane flights. This is election discussion now?

After that article in the local paper about how early votes cast are down over last year despite the increase in early in-person voting, I decided to give it a few days and see what was happening nationally.

Sure enough, it's a national trend. Fewer votes are in at this time compared to 2020 when one combines the mail-ins with in-person. Further, the Republican share of early voting has increased compared to last time around. If Republicans are more likely to be older, they were also more likely to be vulnerable to COVID and thus even more disincentivised to show up for early in-person voting in 2020, but the article does not specify if early votes cast from older folks overall have increased or not.
