We got swirl cards at work earlier this year. Wouldn't allow me to top up my Revolut with it.

Cheers, work are offering Clever cards this year. Certainly looks like a good deal, but want to be sure I'll be able to use it before taking the plunge

Definitely can't top up Revolut with a Clever Card.. I tried it before.

But Clever Cards can be used anywhere a "normal" credit / debit card can be used (including online) so they're still decent to have. A million times better than the One4All cards we used to get anyway.

Yeah we only had One4All cards before now, wasn't impressed when I read that

The Clever cards certainly seem like an improvement. I'm always slightly wary of those prepaid cards since I've heard stories of them getting refused, but I'm sure I'll find something to spend it on

The dose with the Swirl cards we had was that they didn't have chip and pin, which meant it was a pain to use in stores (I think they're designed to be used online mainly). The Clever cards seem to have chip & pin which is an obvious bonus.

I've never had a problem using a Clever Card anywhere either online or in person (via my Google Wallet).

The only issue is having balances split over a number of cards and trying to use it all up. Some retailers are ok with splitting payments across cards but I generally find myself using the last few quid on each for coffees or something small until it's all (or as good as) used up.

The only way I've managed to get the money "off" the card is by using Paypal. Sent the full value of card to my other half and then they withdrew to bank account. A bit convoluted but handy enough if you already have a paypal account set up.

The interest on their Flexible Fund account is dropping daily, gone from 3.45 to 2.97 in the last few weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,575 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

The ECB interest rate was cut last week so it's likely tied to that.

I use mine regularly in HK with no issues but some shops/restaurants don’t like taking card payments for small transactions. They’d rather you use the local Octopus card for these

HSBC, Hang Seng and Bank of China ATMs have no fees for withdrawals

Just got notified of the downgrade in Revolut's travel insurance. It's now pretty poor coverage. Between that and the previous switch in lounge pass which no longer covers Dublin and the removal of Smart Delay that's me knocking the Metal card on the head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,879 ✭✭✭pureza

    what’s gone from it?

I got the email and the only difference I see is for the travel insurance, your trip must be booked with Revolut

    I’m on Ultra

So far they have not reduced the interest rate on deposits,it’s still 3.49%
The STG flex funds rate is 4.91 but it’s took a bit of an exchange hit since the uK budget

Still up ,but has leveled out to be the same as the Euro deposit over a 2 moth average

    I'm on the Metal plan

    • Only trips purchased with your Revolut account will be covered.
    • Trips will be covered up to a maximum of 30 days, instead of covering trips up to 90 days.
    • Your trip and baggage delay expenses are covered if the delay is more than 8 hours, instead of 4 hours.

Refunds on Revolut. If it is striked out (line through the amount) it means the merchant didn’t complete it at their end - correct?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,582 ✭✭✭JTMan

When you say "deposits" - you mean their money market fund - which yeah has a gross rate of 3.49% - but is subject to higher tax rate, 41%, than deposit products - and Revolut apply the tax rate to the gross rate pre MMF fees.

Noticed a handy hack for those who are over their €1000 currency exchange limit

You can still transfer more free of fees from foreign currency to Euro if you do each transaction as 50c.

Yes thats slow AF but could be something to do while bored, queuing, on a bus etc etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,879 ✭✭✭pureza

No I mean their demand deposit account that’s subject to the 100k guarantee

    Not the money market product

The demand deposit account on ultra has 3.49% gross of dirt
The one your talking about delivers less, its 3.3% net of the 40% withholding tax but more than the demand deposit net of dirt

The former only has a 22k guarantee though

As of this morning the Uk STG product is delivering 4.9% net of withholding tax,its also a money market product and subject to exchange rate fluctuations

It took a dip after the Uk budget last week but surged yesterday after the trump victory

It’s doing better than the euro products and a lot better by several multiples than any Irish bank demand product

If you're stuck in a queue or on a bus and have internet and charge in your phone, there has to be something better to do than that…

    I'm partial to your abracadabra

As a general rule if it takes more than 5 minutes to save €1 it's a waste of your time since you're "earning" less than minimum wage

Do you understand the nature of the product you have invested in???

As far as I can see this is just a money market fund. So you capital is at risk and the so called interest rate is in fact a function of the return the fund managers can achieve. Comparing it to a deposit account is wrong in terms of risk profile and possible return rate.

The current 3M money market rate is about 2.67%, so given the flexibility it is a good rate on the face of it. However the Revolut rate seems to be some kind of running annualised rate, so you'd really need to examine your actual returns to confirm this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,879 ✭✭✭pureza

That may be so,but for their ultra customers with the exact same money market product there has been no drop in return,it’s at 3.3’%
Also the rate seems set,it hasn’t changed in months

Ergo there’s not a strict relationship in the ultra version anyway between markets and the rate paid

Got an email, Deliveroo Plus Silver getting removed from my metal plan from tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

Same on Ultra, also very short notice without any reference to being allowed a free break of contracts like the last time they made a major change.

Amazon Prime still gives Delivery Plus Silver as a replacement option if you have it.

I think the final straw for me, the only sub I was actually paying for before I went to metal. Going to ask about cancelling

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

Wow, I just got this from Deliveroo:

Your free subscription with Revolut is ending today. We wanted to inform you that once your Revolut plan ends, you will be moved to a Plus Gold subscription for the next 6 months. You will continue getting free delivery on eligible orders, but now your minimum order value will be €12 from restaurants and €18 from stores.

With your Plus Gold subscription, you'll also receive the following additional benefits: 10% credit back on restaurant orders over €30, discounted service fees on every eligible order, €5 credit back if your order is more than 15 minutes late, exclusive member offers, and more.

Your subscription won't renew automatically. If you wish to continue as a Plus Gold customer after these 6 months, we will ask for your payment details and you will be charged the usual Plus Gold price from that point.

I checked in the App and I am now gold with an end date of 20 May 2025

    That's a nice surprise!

Just a word on cancelling metal. The basic card is a visa card. The metal is a MasterCard. I love having both because if ever there was a problem with either you can use the other one. It's a good value safety blanket IMO for 16 quid a month.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/visa-outage-caused-significant-disruption-for-irish-business-1.3517806

Of course if both providers go down then you are just screwed.
