Club sport pricing is up I see

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,851 ✭✭✭ILikeBoats

As in, up online or increased? or both probably!

It's on the configurator. I expect there's a few errors here and there (I spotted a couple of obvious ones), but roughly, it starts at about 63.5k and after you've added a few "essentials" (wheels, paint, adaptive chassis) you're up to 68-69k. I don't think it has increased on the outgoing model, might be slightly cheaper actually, but its a fair bit more expensive than it was when I purchased 3 years ago.

I'm seriously considering buying a Golf GTD Mk8. Seeing these are priced at around 45k which is pretty expensive but nothing is cheap these days.

From what I've read the DCC is worth having. Anything else I should watch out for?

Electronic issues were a constant issue on mine so I had to get rid of before out of warranty. Had to get steering wheel and unit replaced, power steering went while driving and until the day I traded it in, the radio wouldnt work the odd time, maybe once every 2 weeks - told by VW multiple times no issue with it! Oh and the parking sensor on the front stopped working and had to complain to VW to get it replaced under warranty - never again! Was in and out of the garage multiple times with these issues - longest was 6 weeks in a rental car thankfully provided - they didnt care or show any compassion, these things happen was the standard response - weve had issues worse than yours.

I test drove a 2022 1.5tsi mk8 Golf and really liked it. But I keep hearing these stories about the electrics on the mk8, it's really putting me off buying one.

I’m pretty sure the electronic/software issues have been sorted for a while now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 97 ✭✭TheGreatUnkown

Wow ok. I don't want to make a bad purchase, so are Mk8 Golfs that bad with reliability? I'm thinking about test driving one next week, surely these issues will be noticed on the test drive?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

I’d not worry unduly. Some early cars were plagued with software glitches. For the most part these issues were resolved by software updates and recalls. One common “fix it all” solution was replacing steering wheels. You’d not necessarily notice any problems on a short test drive but do watch out for warning lights on the dash or warning bongs. The most common warnings would be in relation to the “travel assist” or lane-assist systems. If you’re interested in a particular car, try to verify with the dealer that it’s had any recalls / updates applied.

I’ve had a MK8 GTI for 3 years from new and barring the very very occasional infotainment system glitch, it’s been fine. I’ve always downloaded/installed software updates as they’ve come available, and I’d say that’s definitely helped. Never been back to the dealers other than for routine service.

I'm just curious has anyone tried a Golf 7 r estate and a Skoda Superb Sportline 280. I'm looking for a second car to daily since I went stage 3 on my hatchback golf 7 r and it with it being 500hp I don't wan't to use it every day.

If anyone tried both of these, how did they compare to one another such as handling, acceleration, comfort and space?

So I test drove a GTD yesterday and was impressed with it. Very good pickup and the DSG worked very well with it. However the dealer wouldn't really negotiate with the price so having thought about it, I think I'll probably pass on it.

I've noticed dealers aren't willing to negotiate in general. That's fine with me as I have a good car at the moment and will walk away if I feel the car is overpriced.

Have noticed that recently regarding negotiation on price. Was looking at a GTI recently and no real budge on price for a straight cash sale. Walked away, see the same car 3 months later listed for around €3k less than originally

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 97 ✭✭TheGreatUnkown

Thanks for that. Very strange attitude from dealers. It's not like these cars are selling like crazy either. The complete refusal to negotiate meant it was very unlikely that I would buy the car.

I was also told it makes no difference to the dealer if I use finance or cash. Basically I was told the price is the price. This attitude turned me off buying the car. Shame as I liked the car and would have bought it otherwise.

Sure isn't the point of a Golf R being a fun daily? With 4 wheel drive it shouldn't be an issue to habdle unless you're talking reliability?

Maybe a switchable map would be worth a go rather than forking out on a 2nd car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,891 ✭✭✭User1998

But what if the car was already priced fairly? Would you still have the same opinion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 97 ✭✭TheGreatUnkown

It was priced 1k more than a similar GTD of the same year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,891 ✭✭✭User1998

But what if it wasn’t. Would you still have expected a discount?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 213 ✭✭TheBetsy

For me I guess its a bit of surprise of a departure from practices of the years gone by, where there was always wiggle room on the price, as opposed to an outright expectation of a discount.

Ive been keeping an eye on GTI/GTD/R selling prices since then and almost every listing by a dealer has been revised downwards by a few K before they seem to be getting moved on, so it's not as if being stiff on the price seems to be doing them much favours?

If they had been more open to negotiations with people from day 1, they possible could have shifted these cars quicker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 97 ✭✭TheGreatUnkown

I would say yes. Even if it was 100 euro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

No 2 cars in 2 different dealers are going to be exactly the same. A 1k difference isn't that much in a ~40k-ish car. Are they really the very same? Similar mileage? Similar condition, number of owners etc? Exactly the same spec?

I'd use the other car as a negotiation tool, i.e. here, look at this car, it's 1k cheaper! But he's as likely to tell you to go buy that one then as give you 1k off…

Your just letting your ego get in the way of buying a nice car. No other industry would you expect a discount on the asking price, so why is it any different for cars. There must be a reason you didn’t buy the other one for €1k less? Higher mileage, lower spec etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,479 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

Discounts certainly aren't exclusive to cars. If you buy anything with a little bit of value on it a decent shop would be happy to give a discount.

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for a discount on a car, at the moment we're seeing some dealers refusing to budge only to drop several grand off their listings a month or two later.

If they're refusing to budge I'd take the other car unless there's something you really, really want on the more expensive one.

I have switchable maps, I don't drive much but when I do I drive from Hamburg to Dublin so with the estate I'd have more space for stuff and if I got tired along the way could take a nap easier. With my current car, I want to make it more track focused and do a lot of handling mods which would stiffen the suspension so it would not be ideal for these long journeys any more. It has about 90km on the clock and I'd say at least 50km of the driving was doing the drive between Ireland and Germany with cruise control on. With it being close to 100km I wanna put it as a track car and just pick up another to do what I did with the Golf r hatch over the years. I can then finally use it for some spirited driving. Also being mostly in Germany now it makes sense to have another car that is LHD. (My Golf 7 r is RHD as its originally Irish).

Well I guess it is good to have an ego as I got money off in the end. Not much, but enough to make me happy. Yes the other car was white which is a massive no no for me. Can't stand that colour on a car. It also had the stock alloys which I dislike on the GTD.

Anyway, I am delighted to have finally gotten a GTD as I wanted one for a while.

Nice car. Well wear and enjoy.

Anyone have aftermarket wheels on their car? I saw Daltons posted an R with 19" OZ Racing Ultraleggera HLT, I've been eyeing them in matt bronze for my Born. At just over 9kg it's probably one of the lightest wheels you can get at that price. Any concerns about hitting potholes? I've heard light wheels can bend but they'd be on 235/40/19 which is 94mm of sidewall Vs the 82mm you'd get with 235/35/19 on a Golf so not particularly low profile. I just wouldn't want to drop that much money on something only to mess them up over the odd bad pothole.

I’d imagine since they are genuine wheels (not chinese) with a larger sidewall you should be okay

The MK8 is a terrible car, the software is awful as is the quality. The MK7/7.5 is the last of the quality Golf’s.

I wouldnt say terrible but its really not up there with previous VW quality. Its all small things but its small things that give a sense of quality. It seems more plastic-y and attention to detail just isnt there like the 7/7.5. Cheap flimsy cupholder, no cupholder cover for when not in use, bonnet being held up with the cheap rod, lack of sunglasses holder in roof, smaller centre cubby. I get some things have maybe been improved with 8.5 like illuminating slider control (honestly annoying using at night while driving previously). The whole thing made me wonder did they not test the car on people before presenting it to the public as these things are very noticeable but also very easily fixable. The button on steering wheel was also another but not hugely annoying haptics I will say, though sometimes It would press steering wheel heat instead of volume etc. Software wise, it was the laggiest system Ive experienced especially on start up (and yes the software was always kept up to date!). Youd have to leave it for a min before it wanted to do something to settle itself or it would just freeze. Until the day I got rid of it the sound would just not work the odd time, only fix was engine off get out, lock it and leave it a few minutes and get back in and pray. A few times I did drive to work at 5am in the dark with no radio was a bit weird! my 2c anyway :)
