Has anyone done the optional Irish assessment for a civi service role?

Does anyone know if there is a timeframe which these competencies must be from? As in, can they be from a previous job a few years ago or must all of them be in the last couple of years for example.

I think they are not too strict on the timeframe. I applied to the last competition and used examples from ten years ago that they seemed to accept without objection. Good luck to you.

It depends on the interview panel. The unwritten rule in Revenue is that they would ask for a more recent example if it was older than 5 years. I was recently asked for a more recent example in an interview when I used a 4 year old example. Frustrating as it was a really big project that took months to complete.

Finally have a draft of each question ready. Have spent about eight hours over the past few days putting them together and linking them to the capability framework competencies as best I can. Now time to reread and fill in the rest of the form before Thursday.
First time applicant here after 20 years in the private sector. Let’s see how it goes!

    Good luck everyone.

I finally deleted my last pre-Civil Service example today, from 2018, even though it's perfect. Reads prehistoric now to be relying on examples from a different sector six years ago 😭

I did it around 20 years ago and regretted it. It took time away from my preparation for the main interview and I wasn't fluent enough to justify it

I keep getting an error message every time I try to save my application as a draft today. Is anyone else the same?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 101 ✭✭hungerjames

It errors out if you've had the page open for longer than 20 minutes.

You're better off getting your answers ready in a Word Doc and copying / pasting in and saving in one go.

Microsoft Word has a Word Count in the Review tab that includes a character count if you've the text highlighted.

Me too, and I'm sick of the blasted thing at this stage 😀

One final read through this evening and then hopefully ready to submit.

    Good luck everybody!

This kept happening to me too. Make sure you have the mandatory fields below the example boxes ticked and it should be ok. If you have blanks for the example questions just type something like TBC in and it should save. Best of luck

Can we go over the 2, 500 characters in the online form?

I submitted my form last night, there was alot in it but hoping to get shortlisted. I am hoping to get on Wexford panel. I'm coming from private sector, anyone know all the departments available in Co. Wexford if positions come available? Only 5 filled in last competition so not really sure how I will go but want to see how process works.

Not sure if this is of any help! ..But you can google "Civil Service Mobility Map". This shows all of the different civil service depts within each county or zone. It may give you an idea of what depts are located within your chosen area & chances are you would then be assigned to one of those. (But I'm not sure if all depts listed would have AP's).

Do you think its ok if there is a large number of characters left in job descriptions for previous jobs? Like my CO experience has over 1k characters left because I largely did the same thing day in day out

@is that a button, That was really helpful, thank you. Looked like lots initially including dept of social protection, housing, environment and education but when I filtered on AP grades only revenue and agriculture came up. Don't think I'd have the skillset for Revenue and Dept of Agriculture considerable distance from wexford town which I didn't realise 🙈 probably should have checked this out before spending all that time on the form 🤔

I'm sure not a major issue if your CO experience was some time ago but if more recent then maybe try pad it out a bit.

There are definitely APs in DECC and Housing in Wexford. They have big offices near the hospital.

That location map isnt accurate when i last checked for quite a few locations I'm familiar with around the country, only use it to see what departments are in a county but don't rely on it for actual posts imo. Also, not sure what education office is there, has to be a tiny one with only one ap if it still exists, they shut most of the small regional offices they had set up some years ago.

It was nearly 10 years ago at this point so not too recent.

Submitted . I found the educational section to be very detailed and wonder if a list of subjects is warranted . The time it took to list every subject for every course!

The very best of luck everyone

I took to mean e.g. 'English and History' in the case of the Final Year of a BA.

You don't have to list each individual module like Victorian Literature or The Early Modernists etc.

In my case I'd be hard pressed to remember at this stage what some of those were 😄
