    I don't understand the question.

No one really knows anyone's gender, that's why people introduce their pronouns.

The question with an intersex person is what's their sex.

This passed tonight ,shows you the type of sham democracy we have when they've clearly done everything they can to get this legislation through before they potentially lose their majority in the upcoming election ,knowing full well that it isn't a piece of legislation strongly supported by the electorate.

There needs to be scrutiny of the the groups that lobbied so hard for this to be voted through.

It’s absolutely outrageous that the whims of NGO’s are the governments priority when enacting legislation in this country. Is it any wonder why so many are falling down conspiracy theory rabbit holes. Why the mad rush to ram this legislation through when it’s so widely unpopular. I have yet to met one person in real life who supports it.

There won't be though. It appears the NGO class is untouchable.

It would be lovely if a government came in and defunded 90-100% of these NGO's most of whom are useless and essentially duplicate work being done by some other organisation or government department.

Great to see it passed. Great work.

The issue is never the issue; the issue is always the revolution.

The Entryism process: 1) Demand access; 2) Demand accommodation; 3) Demand a seat at the table; 4) Demand to run the table; 5) Demand to run the institution; 6) Run the institution to produce more activists and policy until they run it into the ground.

A thing isn't what it says it is.

A thing is what it does.

    Vote was 78 to 50

32 TDs failed to turn up and vote.

We have a controversial piece of legislation and 32 of our representatives decided it wasn't worth their time to bother turning up to do their jobs.

ContemptibIe behaviour from each of them, particularly as we have a piece of legislation that was not passed by the majority in the Dail

Anyone have a list of who didn't turn up? It might help inform voting choices.

Here is the list of the people who voted! Don't see Simon Harris or Micheal Martin on the list?

Here is who voted no: -

Its a sad reflection on the woeful calibre of politician we have in this country.

All they seem to pass is unecessary and deeply flawed legislation.

Controversial bills like this should require a majority to be passed.

Here is a list of the 30 no shows! (Thought it was 32).

It was just the hate crime part passed last night, the hate speech bit looks to have been delayed.

A great development and positive move from the government. I had a few pints with some mates today to celebrate. The incoming hate speech laws will be glorious and will see many chancers and grifters taken to task.

Won't be given a single vote to any party who supports this anti freedom law

Refund 90% of GAA clubs? I doubt that be too popular with the country folk.

Our government do what Brussels and the NGOs tell them to do. They are too cowardly to go against them

The politicians do what gets them elected. To do what you want them to do and please the minority is not going to happen no matter how many stories you come up with.

Mattie McGrath is apparently worried about democracy. What democracy is that, Mattie?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,840 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

    No they don't.

Nobody was clamouring for a hate crime or hate speech law.The public don't care about that really. This sort of legislation is a prime example of pleasing a minority of the country.

If they wanted to please the majority they'd fix the housing crisis ,fix the immigration situation, build another prison so violent criminals could get the sentences they deserve etc

@aero2k Was requesting the list, so might be useful to some? Those TDs will also be categorised as Yes votes, to highlight the significance of their absence, since they didn't show to vote against it.

Yes, it will be good to be able to ask questions on the doorstep in the coming weeks.

Nobody was clamoring for a hate crime or hate speech law? Really? You might want to take a step outside your bubble. The fact is, the majority of people do care about it. These laws aren’t about catering to some mysterious minority—unless, of course, you mean the far right, who couldn’t even scrape together more than 0.42% of the vote. Yep, that’s right, the "minority" you’re talking about is you and your little echo chamber.

It’s kind of amusing, though, seeing the far right crying on this forum about "pleasing the minority" when you all are exactly the fringe group everyone’s trying to regulate. The truth is, the majority of people actually want laws to crack down on hate speech and hate crimes. Why? Because your kind of rhetoric is toxic, spreading misinformation and stirring up hate. Racist people who spew this garbage need to be held accountable. Maybe if your ideas were even remotely popular, they wouldn’t need to pass laws to protect society from them, but here we are.

So yeah, these laws are about putting an end to the kind of rhetoric that you and your buddies can’t seem to stop spouting. Maybe if you'd gotten more than 0.42%, you’d have a voice, but until then, you’re just proving why these laws are necessary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,484 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

The majority of people don't want or don't care about this law. They are doing the exact opposite of what the majority want. They do it all the time, how many people support the money they gave to RTE for another example.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,311 ✭✭✭lmao10

Oh please, spare us the "majority don’t care" routine. The fact that laws like this exist proves that most people do care about stopping hate speech—especially to curb the kind of rhetoric that you and your far-right pals keep spouting. Let’s not pretend your 0.42% of voters represent the masses. People are fed up with racist misinformation and want laws to shut it down. You can keep pretending you're the voice of the majority, but the numbers say otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,840 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

You seem to think that the only people opposed to these laws are people who vote for those minuscule looney right wing parties.Problem with that argument is that it's a load of nonsense, the opposition to these laws and criticism of them have come from all across the political spectrum and from all walks of life.

I'm not part of the "far right" and yet I'm opposed to them.

Can you explain what issues you have with this bill being passed? How will it affect you day to day etc. as you seem very passionate about it.

What part of this might in a million years ever effect you?
