It's anyone who has that high milage on the clock including Aidan. He had a decent club season but the decisions he made in the Knockmore game left a lot to be desired and I think the Mayo team will remain at its current level until the older crew have departed.

It wouldn't be a clear out of seasoned players. A lot of the players you listed and in their mid to late 20s and have a good few seasons under their belts. I really believe the likes of Mattie, McBrien, Carney and Jordan would go up a level when the leadership roles are transferred to them.

And on that point it's likely that these are the players a new management would focus on if they came in. It's time to move on in 2025.

I believe our S&C is still in the top 3 in the country & has been for 15 years.

Some of our players today simply aren't built as physically as the players of the 2010/19 team & so they can't impose themselves on the opposition & grind them down.

Crucially, they also lack fundamental decision making skills that top tier teams need to get over the line in big games during the heat of battle..

Right now we are more likely to be cut adrift ,rather than closing the gap under Kevin Mc, but i harbour hope providing we can start integrating some of our talented youth into our set-up over the next 3 years, as this squad is still relatively young.

Weather not looking great for Sunday, wet in the morning with showers & very windy in the afternoon.

New Mayo jersey launched. Very similar to the previous one. Talk about boring and unimaginative. Is this the best ONeills/Elverys can do?

I'm not sure how different one green jersey with a red hoop in the middle can be from another green jersey with a red hoop in the middle can be.

If we wanted exciting and imaginative, then we would have to be willing to change the basic foundation of the jersey and I'm not sure the majority of people would want that.

I disagree. Almost every jersey has it's basic components that have to be worked with. It's what designers do with those elements that separates the good ones from the average ones. At first viewing I thought the wrong photos had been put up by mistake and that we were seeing the previous jersey.

There was a departure from the standard red band in 2012 so no reason why that couldn't happen again.

Orange weather warning for Sunday at the moment - will the game go ahead if that remains in place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,010 ✭✭✭WesternZulu

The jersey is at least better than the previous two iterations we’ve had.

O'Neills do some excellent work for the various soccer clubs they supply in Ireland and the UK. There seems to be some unwritten rule that GAA Home jerseys must not be tampered with. Any inspiration seems to go into Away and Training kits. If I recall from 2012, many werent impressed that they moved away from the red band on the jersey so you cant please everyone.

The chevrons on the sleeves and the 3 white stripes don't compliment each other. If they continued the chevrons instead of the stripes it would look far better.

How is it better than previous one? Im genuinely interested to know how it is. So similar as to not be worth changing IMO.

You may well be right. Supporter conservatism leading to blandness.

    Probably a good decision.

I'd wonder about insurance issues in an orange warning.

Of course the storm could pass and be nothing by Sunday but I think sensible overall .

I thought Aiden was very good in the first 20 yesterday evening Conn V Leinster . The extra room gives him a lot of other options . 2nd point from play was top class .

The black & red jersey of 2017 always brings fond memories to me, one of my favourites jerseys despite it being more-Co Down like rather than typical Mayo jersey..

Its probably because witnessed our best football that year & i cant recall the team playing badly while wearing it & i would have no qualms if it returned.

Love that black and red jersey.

It debuted v Kerry in Tralee in the league and was worn the day of the semi final replay v Kerry.

Santa got it for me for Christmas 2017, I still love it.

A bit early but certainly would seem to be a capable character and also might have more pedigree now than some of the candidates we’ve had run in the past.

Oh I'm sure there'll be no shortage of promises of funding in the coming weeks anyway!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,592 ✭✭✭Westernview

They had already applied for European funding for the MacHale park location so they will probably have to reapply. Having the land will be a huge head start though and I'm sure some funding come following on from that.

I am in 2 minds about the location though. Less than a half hour from the 3 main towns is good but I would have preferred to see it nearer a town, such as on lands along the new Castlebar bypass.

Do you apply for planning or funding first?

    What's the land zoned for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,592 ✭✭✭Westernview

They will need planning first yes, similar as what was needed for developing Bekan. I presume the area is currently zoned agricultural.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,380 ✭✭✭crusd

There is an existing approved planning application for "community park with GAA pitch" in Bohola. Is it that location I wonder. Did that proposal have no funding so that transferred it to the GAA? If it already has permission for a pitch getting started could be straighforward. The additional facilities would obviously require new planning permission

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,592 ✭✭✭Westernview

That sounds like a completely different local pitch so but I don't know if it's the same place.

The only information so far is that the lands are on the Kiltimagh road near Bohola. The plan is to develop 6 pitches so it would be a much bigger development than the community pitch one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,380 ✭✭✭crusd

The planning from 2021 for Pitch and community park with 2km walks is at location below on the map which is on the Kiltimach road, albeit with access from a side road. More than enough space for the development detailed in the Connacht. Havent been out that road in a couple of years at least id say so dont know if the work ever started. Google maps says the image below is 2024 so doesnt look like it. Current planning regs also discourage developments of pitches that are not within walking distance of a village / town

Thanks for that. It could well be planned for there so. Very low lying and wet looking area.

Did the planning regs change since Bekan was developed I wonder? Hopefully the board have done some background work on the planning side and that this whole story isn't just a leak. It wouldn't be the first time the Telegraph have gone on a solo run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,790 ✭✭✭muddle84

I imagine those planning regs are specific to pitches built for the purpose of that community if that makes sense? I'd imagine there's a case to be made for an exemption when the pitches are not being built for use by the locality they're built in.

Overall I think its a great step forward for the county, but its a shame its not a more central location.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,592 ✭✭✭Westernview

Could well be an exemption for the overall site but I see that Bekan then went through planning for different elements - the air dome etc.

Location is frustrating alright but a cash strapped board will struggle to turn down a large bank of free land. Not great planning even if application is successful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,589 ✭✭✭MacDanger

The location is only ~11 miles (18km) from where the previous planned location was and slightly closer to Dublin which is where a lot of the longer journeys will be made from

For me it's not so much the distance as the fact it's not beside a town. It will be mainly reliant on private car transport. Nearer Castlebar for example would have better connections to bus and train station and could also have cycle and pedestrian links developed to the schools and ATU and nearer to businesses servicing the site. Just better in terms of modern planning.
